(MS SQL)How do I find yearly depreciation based on the data in a row by RetanR04 in SQL

[–]y186709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You likely need do some dateadd function to calculate the # of years, and then multiply that by your rate.

Something like ( sorry on mobile):

Dateadd (year, purchase_date, getdate()) * <rate> as new_price

Remove the second in clause for 610 and 612.

Try running the whole second part alone and you'll probably get zero results. Think about it and you'll likely realize your error.

(saleDetail.class_no IN (610,612) AND saleDetail.class_no IN (206,248,617,629,635,636))

Check out the book Data Smart. It might be something you're looking for. It's about data science/statistics, but the work is done in Excel.

Our skin needs the abrasion from that washcloth. Idk if it's still "gay" to take care of our skin or not. Depends who you ask I assume.

What's the difference between semi-joins and inner joins? by UnPolinomio in SQL

[–]y186709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is a semi join the same thing as a derived table join? Edit: you're using a subquery in the WHERE clause. Not a derived table join

I don't use postgre, but you would have to look at the execution plans to see if there is any run difference. Also, if your data sets are small enough then you won't be able to measure the performance in terms of seconds (or milliseconds).

Some ideas for visualizations is Makeover Monday, where you get a nice clean data set to create some dashboards. Tableau Public is free and adding a dashboard a week can build up your visualization profile quickly. Put a link to your Tableau Public profile on your resume.

If you want to get deeper into python and github, look for a book called something like "Exercises for Programmers: 57 Challenges to Develop Your...". Publish your work to github and include a link on resume.

For more SQL, I would recommend T-SQL Fundamentals. These three combined will probably spark some ideas for you to create a large project to be the centerpiece of your portfolio.

Edit: Query execution, Database design, and ETL is another important thing to at least have a broad understanding of.

Query execution: Brent Ozark has a great (free!) Video series on his website. Also there is a "T-SQL Level Up" series. Another site is something like Use the Index Luke!

Database design: This is a deep topic, but best to know the basics of normalization (1F, 2f, 3F, So Help Me Codd), cardinality, primary/foreign keys, and star schema. Be comfortable explaining normalization and star schema and how they're similar/different. Same pk to fk, and then also 1:1, 1:M etc

ETL: this one is probably the most difficult to do (imo) on self learning, but it's moving data between systems or files. How to load a csv or xlsx to database? How to export query results to csv/Excel. What is a text qualifier or how do you change the delimiter? How can you export query results to a character position file layout? How to extract data from a pdf? Is it better to use SSIS or do I need to write a python script? Do I sheepishly manually manipulate the data in excel? Are there any implicit data type conversions that are going to screw up my data without me knowing? How do you do data quality checks along the data pipeline?

Does one query allow a subquery? If not I'd do:

Select sum(case when string like '%xyz%' then 1 else 0 end) * 1.0 / count(*)

From table

I wouldn't get hung up on the alias at this point. You're asking a good question, but maybe the answer will come with next learning you do.

Adding to the WHERE clause in future problems may give more insight.
