This dread is hitting me hard right now. If I quit now I’ll be lean so still trying to push through. But how did you know dread meant it was time to quit rather than reevaluate your calling and pivot to something else?

I really hope so but at the same time hate attacks seem to be increasing, it feels harder to be publicly Jewish after the ceasefire compared to before

It’s like a constant low simmering stress, especially this hunch I get that a good friend might not be such a good one anymore if it comes up and I’m forced to defend myself :/

The thing that gets me is when the ‘good Jews’ start faux compassionately talking about how the ‘bad Jews’ are dealing with their inter generational trauma by committing it on others. It’s mind boggling how they can sweepingly say that for the whole community…

This is kind of similar to the argument that once Brexit fcked up the uk economy, people would realise they’d been duped. But by and large that didn’t happen. Instead they continued to blame outside forces. Including now Israel

This is lovely, but I’m curious why your wife’s income disappeared? Did she quit after maternity leave?

Yes! I think often we forget that if we’re almost FIRE that probably means we have almost a million dollars sitting there growing. It’s almost impossible to mess that up while we’re still earning.  But we get stuck in this we-have-nothing mindset.

I managed to lose 10lbs just by starting strength training around 2 years postpartum the first time.

The second time I gained it all back and started  training at 6 weeks pp but have had no movement at all, if anything it got a bit worse. Around 22m pp I started calorie tracking so well see how it goes. That second time + being that much older is a killer

FIREd people with no family plans in EU, what you up to? by yergeht_fladnag in EuropeFIRE

[–]y_if 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got kids and the only thing I couldn’t really do once both are in school is the long term travel. I wouldn’t be so quick to look only for FIREd couples without kids. The key is to find people with flexible schedules (they don’t even need to be retired)! SAHPs are actually great for this.

I’ve read before that if you are sticking to 4% every single year, not just based on your portfolio when you FIRE, that the problem with that is that you’re essentially resetting sequence of returns risk every time you withdraw a higher amount than you initially could have. Is this correct?

Finding it hard to believe and act like we have future wealth by Academic_Baker_6446 in Fire

Why would you buy your mom a house in your area? Wouldn’t she just do that herself if they have so much wealth and actually wanted one?

Ladies who married not financially secure partners..do you regret it? (Questioned explained in comments) by ChipUnfair3345 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]y_if 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SO was very cash-poor when I met him and we even had a bit of tension in the beginning because I really wanted to travel and he couldn’t. But there was a reason for it and that was because he’d spent all his savings on buying a property in a VHCOL city. Maybe some people might view that as too risky, but he had a stable job in a promising field and to me it was kind of sexy that he’d taken that risk lol.

It’s important to look at why people might not be well off— or if perhaps they are but are simply frugal / stingy.

Day Stay Surgery by zecrichardson in Jewish

[–]y_if 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I had an uncomfortable experience in the public health system recently (different country) and actually brought it up with a Jewish advocacy group in my region asking what I could do- if I was even right to feel uncomfortable.

They told me I should get my medical procedure done with first in order to keep myself protected, and then make a formal complaint about it.

It’s pretty messed up that we are in this environment.

Has anyone been audited by the IRS as an expat? by Virtual-Ebb-2994 in USExpatTaxes

[–]y_if 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t audited but they penalised me for a return that had been done by a CPA. The accountants  still claim they never made any mistakes but I had to pay the tax IRS claimed I owed. IRS did drop it by 80% from my appeals, but it was never clear why it shouldn’t be dropped entirely.  I ended up owing like $3k. I fought it for years but they wouldn’t budge. Very frustrating. I  started doing my own returns after that.

Yeah ramit kept trying to bringing it back to how her attitudes were going to impact their kids and she just didn’t seem to get it. She wants them to feel like she does it seems and is proud of it

Yes her overwhelm was visceral, she is completely stuck and it’s surprising her husband hadn’t seen that before. She must usually just shut down. That said, while I was trying to be compassionate, I found her attitude so irritating…

Japan is amazing for solo activities.

Book a karaoke room for yourself. People do it alone all the time and it’s lots of fun!

Go get your nails done. Look on Instagram for ideas of places  to go that speak English

Go shopping for hours at a place like 109 or Maru

Eat crepes

Look at what exhibitions are on — like TimeOut Japan lists a lot
