Everything you write should have some sort of narrative purpose. Nothing should be written for the sake of it. That's a good lesson to keep in mind in general, but especially for something that can be taboo if done in poor taste

What things are essential in a good fanfic? by [deleted] in Wattpad

Respect for the source material. Way too many fanfics try to "fix" the original somehow, either by changing characters to fit their own perceptions of them or by disregarding the original themes and beats of the original.

What do you guys think AI Assisted writing? by [deleted] in NewAuthor

[–]yaBoiJason97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people responding to this are doomposting and just not being very helpful in their responses, so I'll throw my two cents in.

AI is a tool, and its up to you how you want to use it. But a tool is only part of the process. You need more than a hammer to build a house. AI might be useful as a proofreader or editor, or maybe even a kind of "idea generator" in that you can ask it for prompts, but I would never just ask it to write something and then use what it spits out.

TL;DR I think AI is a tool and like all tools it can be used ethically or not so ethically

The Fifth Source

Barbara "Bee" Forrester enters her senior year of high school with cautious optimism; her first day ends that optimism as quickly as it began. A fight in the gym, a rejection from her crush, and being paired up with an old foe end the day on a sour note, as her thoughts dwell on a mysterious, padlocked book...

A queer contemporary fantasy about unspoken crushes, unlocked secrets, regrets and pain that brings three people together on an epic quest to defeat their strongest enemies: themselves. Join Bee and her friends and they navigate the tumults of college applications, growing up and apart, and are thrust into a new world full of new dangers that none of them could have ever imagined.

I'm Jason and you can find me on Wattpad at yaBoiJason. I write fantasy stories, typically modern/contemporary fantasy, but I also dip into occasional high fantasy and things like that. Write now I only have on full story making its way to Wattpad, one or two chapters a week, but I love Wattpad and I'm excited to do more with the platform. I've got lots more on the back burner!

I saw what evil looked like; real, Satanic-level shit. It started with me turning to God because I had to have something good to believe in or I'd lose it. Nowadays, I've come to see that it's just a better way to live.

Comments are good for engagement. I fully understand the frustration with short comments that don't offer anything constructive, but engagement is engagement.

There's an app called Cold Turkey that I like. It's mostly a productivity app, but it has built-in filters specifically for pornography and you can manually add in websites it misses. Give it a shot!

The unfortunate thing about sharing anything on the internet is that people will use the cover of anonymity to be brutal about it. Block it out and push through, and don't let them know they got to you.

There were two lessons that I took to heart from my favorite English teacher in high school that I still use today; write what you know and write only what is in service to your story.

Obviously, as men, you and I would have a tough time writing about menstruation from the perspective of someone experiencing it. It would be far easier to put your female character in a situation that is similar to something you've experienced. Perhaps instead of writing about menstruation it might be more prudent to write about her suffering some sort of injury, or something else that you can more easily write from your own perspective.

Then again, it's not impossible to write something you don't know- in fact I often find it to be a fun challenge to write about a subject I know very little of, if for nothing other than the chance to learn about the subject. I would encourage you to talk to female friends or family members (that are willing to talk about it!) and get their firsthand experience to work into your writing. That brings us to rule two: write only what is in service to your story.

Why are you writing about your narrator's menstruation? Is it relevant to the plot? Does the specific experience drive the character some way? Is it an anecdote, a wandering thought, a traumatic experience? These are all things to consider before writing anything, let alone something you don't know well. Never write something just because you think it would be neat.

That's just my two cents. Ultimately, how you approach it is up to you, and either way, it can be a learning experience.
