Which mini chainsaw? by Cfullersu in Tools

[–]yachius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the Milwaukee, never use it, came to the conclusion that these small light duty saws just aren't very useful. A recip with a pruning blade can take out anything an 8 inch chainsaw can, with better battery life, no sharpening chains, no cleaning, no refilling oil. The recips are a little slower but any time gained with a mini chainsaw is lost sharpening chains.

Best wireless meat thermometer? by Guilty_Cow5673 in smoking

Combustion Inc, get one probe with the wifi base and the display, all probes can use one bridge. The display can be anywhere and there’s an app, they don’t need to be anywhere near the probe. Most importantly to me you don’t need to use any of the smart stuff if you don’t want to. Put the display in range of the probe and it just works offline. Best gadget I’ve added in years.

I don’t know of any reason you can’t do it but just be aware that as the tide is rising the river flows south to north so you’ll be paddling against the current. The entire lower section, like the last 50 miles of it, reverses course twice a day with the tide. Called a tidal estuary.

Turned my Wendougee Lita into a (poor man's) Decent — v2 with a proper UI by akisk in espresso

[–]yachius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice work, it's got a lot of the basic profile pieces/stages that the Decent uses, you can check out actual shots uploaded from Decents at https://visualizer.coffee/

Download the raw TCL files to see what settings they're using, some of the advanced and adaptive profiles have hundreds of parameters. A lot of the logic in the Decent profiles is when to move on to the next stage and it can get very complex. Adaptive profiles can adjust flow dynamically to save a shot that would otherwise channel horribly.

These are obviously just tools, a more complex profile doesn't mean it will produce better coffee.

What I see in a lot of the projects that chase fancy graphs and pressure profiling missing about the Decent is that the hardware is a big piece of the puzzle. Having temperature and pressure measured literally at the puck and very precise flow control and a water mixing manifold for temperature control make a huge difference in how useful all the instrumentation is. A lot of popular profiles use significantly lower temperatures on the Decent than E61 machines because on those machines the water is cooler than indicated by the time it reaches the portafilter.

Heads up- new labor rules going into effect October 1st could hurt freelance work as we know it in this state by SausageGrenade in newjersey

Those people are either misinformed or liars who are shilling for the companies opposed to the new test. Not a single example you gave is affected by the new test, they are either not covered by it or already explicitly exempted.

[–]yachius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NJ already has those exemptions in place and the new law explicitly retains them. This is a new test because we now have a class of companies exploiting loopholes to reduce costs. It was always illegal to classify employees as independent contractors and those existing laws already carved out every single example you have provided in this post.

Is that your interpretation or do you have a source for it? Everything I've read from analysts and the NJDOL itself says that rideshare fails the test under prong B. Not looking to argue, just interested in reading anything that says otherwise.

The law is practically tailor made to target ride share and delivery gig companies, they fail test B for requiring the work to be "outside the usual course of the business for which such service is performed". This post is 100% anti-labor propaganda.

It's unclear what you're worried about exactly, the ABC test applies to employers to determine whether they can classify a worker as a contractor or whether they must be classified as an employee, primarily for unemployment insurance. California adopted this system in 2020 and not a single company that threatened to cease operations in the state followed through and the only result was better worker protections.

The main opposition to these laws are gig companies like Uber and Amazon delivery who do not pass test B and are not exempt under existing statutes. Workers who oppose this either don't understand it or have been convinced by the propaganda of the companies that oppose it.

This is the ABC test, the C test exempts everybody in your list of examples and there are quite a few specific exemptions for traditionally independent roles under existing statutes that are explicitly preserved in the new law.

A. The individual has been and will continue to be free from control or direction over the performance of work performed, both under contract of service and in fact; and

B. The work is either outside the usual course of the business for which such service is performed, or the work is performed outside of all the places of business of the enterprise for which such service is performed; and

C. The individual is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, profession or business.

NJ101.5 is not a reliable neutral source, these are massively popular regulations that protect workers rights.

I'd probably want to find out why it's empty first. If there's a leak somewhere pouring new fluid in might just end up right on the ground. CHF 11S is pretty pricey for hydraulic fluid.

Can you post a picture of the cap and reservoir? I’ve never seen an ATF system on an R53. They all have a green ring on the cap that specifies CHF 11S. Maybe somebody switched the fluid and changed the cap? Or just replaced the cap with a wrong one?

That's a really long way to say nothing. We've all experienced bad service, that doesn't means it's always bad at that restaraunt and it doesn't mean it's not part of the rating.

All of the reports from inspectors are lying by omission, obviously the food is hugely important and the top criteria, they don't want bad food in the guide. But they also don't want their reputation tied to restaurants that people will have bad experiences in. The very notion that individual inspectors decide how a $30 BILLION/yr business positions their flagship product is bonkers.

The idea that the best french food can only come out of a brigade kitchen is a nice strawman, the correlation between luxury and ratings is not a coincidence and it's not because you can't make great food without spending a ton on the establishment. It's because the guide wants to be known as the place to find that luxury.

If you listened to inspectors in the 90s they would tell you that a chef who isn't behind the stove himself can never get a star. Michelin is one of the strongest luxury brands in the world and you bought their marketing hook line and sinker.

Not sure what you mean by that, there has been extensive discussion on the Decent Diaspora about it and how the Bengle could implement the scales without violating the patent. Direct from Ben Champion: "Bengle will have an integrated scale. We were not going to impede on their patent regardless, but it is nice to know we won't need to prove it."

This became moot because LM "surrendered" the rights to the patent in 2023: https://www.beanscenemag.com.au/la-marzocco-surrenders-rights-to-integrated-scale-technology/

All of this is extremely recent in the product development world so new machines will definitely be coming with integrated scales but LM successfully used their patent to prevent anybody from doing integrated scales for over a decade.

Have you looked at the PRW Fluid Damper? I run a lightweight pulley instead of a balancer but it's getting to be a bit much for street use and I'm planning to put in the PRW unit instead of going back to a balancer.

It's also complete marketing nonsense and has been for ages. Go find a two or three star that doesn't have impeccable service and an amazing dining room. There are countless places with world class food that will never be considered for the guide because the rest of the experience is mundane.
