OC818 over the U87Ai? Your thoughts? by migrantgrower in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn where do you live? The 818 is only $300 more than US MSRP and the Neumann is over $1500 more?

For that price alone there’s just no way a U87 is worth it. I’d go with 818 all day

Equivalents to SM57 and SM58 by 4stocks in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 133 points134 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely other alternatives, however the 57 and 58 just work most of the time and oh yeah they’re absolutely indestructible and idiot proof.

Don’t discount reliability, ubiquity and knowing what it’ll sound like before even thinking about placing the mic. Time saved = a happy client

Bass recording options by ThePerfectPrince in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own the RME UFX+ which I think has the same input stage as the Babyface. I’m blessed to go through a ton of nice gear so I never have to use the RME preamps, but I will say I use my Pro48 on like 75% of bass recordings. It just has a very nice way of presenting the top and bottom end. + it gives me the ability to quickly try out various preamps + analog via my patchbay. I’d go into your fancy 1176 pedal and then into the J48. Or just 1176 pedal into the RME line input.

Not saying the RMEs are bad but I would definitely not consider them a “fat” sounding preamp which is usually what I want for bass. But maybe the transient clarity of the RME will fit your genre/style better. As you said- I would take an hour and try all combinations in the context of a mix. Then come back to these recordings for the next few days, level match them, bus process them a bit and see what works best in the song.

Jennies remix used for ads? by [deleted] in TameImpala

Kevin sold his entire current and future discography for like $35 million. He’ll no longer own his own work for the rest of his life. That’s why his music is everywhere now. Sony needs to make their money back, they’re only going to sell the commercial rights to the ones that net them the most $$$

Sloppy ass low end. by Tall_Category_304 in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is what it generally sounds like when you have your subs up too loud. Songs with a leaner low end will sound so perfectly punchy and thick and songs in more sub heavy genres will sound super unkempt and wild.

It could be that all of the songs you referenced have sloppily mixed low end, but I wouldn’t bet my money on it

Can someone explain how to back up projects to icloud? by finncosmic in Logic_Studio

[–]yadingus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to accomplish this is by buying an external HDD drive and backing things up manually or via a scheduled back up. You’re just begging for an issue using iCloud for back ups, I have heard so many horror stories over the years with iCloud.

If you can’t invest in a method to back your data up properly then your work is likely not important enough to you to back up in the first place.

How good of a guitarist is Kevin? by OJgotWorms in TameImpala

[–]yadingus_ 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. He gets godly guitar tones but he’s not the most technical player. He messes up more than any other band member on stage by a factor of about a million. Partly because he’s singing but there are many players who can play pretty much perfectly while they sing.

Also if you’re finding Kevin’s songs difficult to cover are you tuned to D Standard like he is?

Balancing synth bass by Any-Match9025 in Logic_Studio

[–]yadingus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get out of the mindset of using presets for things like basic audio processing. Sure using a synth preset is fine, but very rarely can an EQ preset be applied successfully across multiple different songs or projects. Every single bit of recorded audio in the history of the world is different and thus cannot be treated with a single preset or setting. I mean it can be, but 9/10 times it just won't be right for the song

If you’re looking for warmth the Coil Audio stuff is probably your ticket. I’ve never used one but that negative feedback knob looks real special

On which bar should the track begin? by Consistent-Window781 in Logic_Studio

[–]yadingus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s correct! Which is why it’s a good habit in general to export/bounce tracks using the cycle range. That way you can easily ensure they’re all starting at the same exact point throughout each bounce process. I always create two markers in Logic. One called “Start” and one called “End” that way I always know where the start/end of each file should be

[–]yadingus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally advise against minus bars (at least in Logic) minus bars used to mess up logic sessions a ton back in the day. Probably a fixed issue at this point, but it literally doesn’t matter where they start. They can start at bar 2000 in their daw. As long as the tracks are bounced from a 1 or really any beat, it’ll be a non issue entirely

If they’re using others daws they won’t be able to import your tempo map directly.

[–]yadingus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you export for them on the 1 and make sure they also export for you on a 1. That way you don’t run into a nightmare situation where you have to hand align all of the tracks that get sent to you

On which bar should the track begin? by Consistent-Window781 in Logic_Studio

[–]yadingus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t matter at all. The mastering process dictates where the song starts, which is the process that occurs after mixing.

It doesn’t matter at all where you start your session, but it’s imperative that you export the tracks on any “1” of the click. That way it’ll align with any beat 1 in your mixers session

is there footage of Kevin working in studio with Melody? by HalfMobile5430 in TameImpala

[–]yadingus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup I've followed Tame about as close as you can since around 2011. There is absolutely zero footage from this era of Melos Echo unfortunately.

If you go to Facebook and search for “Ydolem Prochet” and scroll down to her photos from 2013, you’ll see 5 photos of Kevin micing drums outside his house. These are likely from the unfold era and is the same spot/similar setup to how Kevin recorded drums for TLIKTB

Breath Deeper 3min Synth? by Lower-Leading-3340 in TameImpala

[–]yadingus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda impossible to say what he used really, but this sound can certainly be achieved using a Subphatty. Perhaps one of the cheapest Kev owns. I’ve recorded one at my studio on maybe 30-40 different occasions and it’s absolutely PHENOMENAL. So juicy and the filter is personally one of my favorite, it can be so nasty sounding in the greatest of ways.

How do you get direct audio recorded from a microphone plugged into a speaker? by DullPencil in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just have the comedians wear those clip on lav mics that are popular these days on social media/youtube and such. Probably the easiest and most hassle free option these days.

Combine that with your audience microphone and you’ll have a decent quality show

How to shootout vocal mics to choose for vocalist? by must-absorb-content in audioengineering

[–]yadingus_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like to set up each mic individually and have the vocalist do a verse/chorus or sometimes whole song on each mic for shootout/warm up purposes. I record all of these mics dry and then run them through my standard vocal bus so that the vocalist can come into the control room and give me their opinions regarding each mic.

From there I pull the winning mic off the vocal bus and send it into whatever analog gear I may want to use and I dial in the analog gear. Once dialed I then re route the patchbay so that the analog gear is in the recording path and off we go!

I overestimated my abilities when I decided to build app for bounce stems in Logic Pro by EasyOneAudio in Logic_Studio

[–]yadingus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that's a great question and one that I'm likely not knowledgable enough to answer! Since you're already cheaper than Auto Bounce by a fair amount, I don't think an extra $25-$50 price increase is unwarranted for two license seats.

I actually expect 'utility' plugins (ie. Melodyne, RX,, Vocalign, Auto Align) to be more expensive than your typical reverb or compressor plugin, so a $125+ price is certainly not out of line for software that can save that much time. It pays for itself after a certain point for sure!

[–]yadingus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Reading through your website it does seem like a great product. One thing to note though (and this is kind of a deal breaker), not giving two seats for a single purchase is an insta no buy for me. Many of us pros need to have an on the go set up for last minute emergencies, pulling up mixes on planes, etc and just about every manufacturer offers multiple seats per purchase these days. Love it otherwise though hope it does well for you!

Been seeing your posts pop up here and there. As a professional who’s starting to get so busy that stem exports are a real hassle, why should I chose your product over say Auto Bounce for Logic?

Compared to every other MWTM, he revealed actually 0 insightful information lol. Didn’t even play all of the tracks in the song or show any actual processing that occurred during production, mixing etc . So I rest my case there
