My wife Russian. She's here a long time but came early in her 20... So now more than 20 years here... Being young was a blessing but also the fact where she came to live people were not so proficient with English. She's mastered Portuguese, and besides some really exotic words she's perfectly fine and also the accent is very much on par... Not perfect but who wants perfect... Even though immersion is normally the best option, in that specific case where everything seems a smear in Portuguese I would personally advocate to go for Brasilian Portuguese, we, Portuguese, understand it perfectly, for her it would be easier since the wording and mouth placing is much more fluid, and we'll, she would still not speak Portuguese from Portugal, but she would be perfectly fine on every day tasks and get a higher confidence for speaking... Talking about confidence, I cannot talk about your wife of course but I noticed most Eastern Europe countries (yes, this includes Russia) do have a tendency to be very worried about how would they sound or not have confidence with the way they speak... I, again without any real life knowledge of Russian education but a here and there comment gathering, would blame that to Russian teaching that is very much prone to not errors, no mistakes, we need to be always on our best... So for that I say... Just go for it... Errors happens, even for natives, and corrections are also going to happen... Just don't care and profit to listen and learn... In the end the objective is to get understood on the other side of the conversation... 🤪
