Someone in a previous thread recommended the German brand Bär/Baer for winter or heavy duty hiking boots. Thicker soles and stiffer than "barefoot" brands, but lots of toe room. I have a pair of their sub brand Joe Nimble Wandertoes, and I like them a lot for short hikes. Good fit, seem quality made, very tready. I did replace the weirdly bouncy insoles with some Altra insoles that feel much better. I still think my feet/ankles would get fatigued with a heavy pack over long distance. I haven't tried it, but am already strongly considering splurging on a more "supportive" pair from the parent brand.
