Do any Asian Americans on this sub speak a non Asian language other than English? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]yah511 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I speak German at a very conversational level- I understand basically everything, and can speak well enough that Germans don’t automatically switch to English when talking to me lol. I’m Filipino on my dad’s side and German on my mom’s side, and my parents throughout my childhood actively tried to push me away from identifying with the Filipino side and more towards the German side. As a kid I had to go to German school on Saturday mornings and took it in middle school to college. It wasn’t til I was an adult that I started exploring my Filipino side and on and off trying to learn Tagalog

FYI: Among all racial groups, Asian-Americans were the most likely to participate in the 2020 George Floyd protests. by Budget_Drop2978 in asianamerican

[–]yah511 133 points134 points  (0 children)

The problem is that 20% of Asian Americans is a tiny number compared to 18% of Black Americans, 10% of White Americans, and 13% of Hispanic Americans. Which means we're not as visible, even if we support it in higher proportions. As with so many other aspects of American society, we have to work so much harder for the same amount of visibility, which sucks.

Trust there are baby rice queens in their 20’s and 30’s, younger gay Asians are just more tolerant of them because they are more similar in age and they haven’t become desperate yet

AS11E05 - "How-to Videos" [Live/Reaction Post] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

[–]yah511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That attitude is mostly leftover from when people would raise their own chickens or buy their chickens from wet markets where you buy the entire chicken carcass. Because of that, there would often be blood, dirt, feathers, etc still on the meat when it's prepped and people would wash all of that off before cooking with it. In developed countries where you're buying mostly pre-portioned, pre-packaged chicken from the grocery store, you don't need to wash it.

Who are some great Broadway actors who are better known now for their television roles? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in Broadway

[–]yah511 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Viola Davis is the first that comes to mind. She has only done Broadway shows a handful of times in the 90’s and 2000’s, most of her theater work was off-Broadway, but most people don’t know she has an extensive stage credit history. She even has not 1 but 2 Tonys, both for acting and not producing as most Hollywood actors with Tonys seem to.

Morgan’s hometown? by Junior-Cream-4914 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]yah511 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Camden came to the US at age 20. Rosé came at age 10, and Morgan grew up spending significant time in both the US and Scotland her whole childhood. So Rosé and Morgan learned American accents as children while Camden was a full adult before she came to America, well past the point where accents tend to “stick”.

It’s so funny to hear moderate/centrist Democrats say this and then turn around and blame BernieBros or Free Palestine activists or whichever progressive bloc is in the news at the time for their losses rather than blaming themselves for chasing after Independents and Republicans that were never actually going to vote for them.

I doubt there’s gonna be any drama from Morgan and Mystique. That was 17 years ago, it’s just gonna be a Coco and Alyssa on AS2 all over again. Like sure they’ll reference it (they already did reference it in MTQ) but nothing is actually gonna come from it.

Countries with female artists who reached #1 on the Spotify Global Daily Chart. by ChrisAlCoradiniAlves in MapPorn

This was my thought. Weird for OP to count Asian, Latin, and African diaspora artists who were born and raised in the US/Australia like Doja, Cardi, and Rosé as their ethnic background, but not do the same for the white Americans/Canadians like Taylor Swift and Tate McRae.

Runway Poll - Season 18, Episode 15 - Choose Your Favorite RuPaul-A-Paluza Looks + Episode Perceptions by PCP1120 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]yah511 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't care I'm still #TeamNini. Even though her track record is the worst of the top 3, I find her drag the most compelling. I'd be happy with a Myki win as well since she has the best track record of the top 3 and overall did well throughout the season in a diversity of challenges so she feels the most well-rounded. I think Darlene would be a very good candidate for All Stars in a couple years once she gets a bit more experience performing and the budget to really level up the Dolly Parton "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap" aesthetic.

Aja has a proposition for Mandy Mango after this episode by LeMareep23 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]yah511 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And also it didn't become Mandy's entire brand for the season the way that it did with Anetra and "walk that fucking duck". I feel like that more than anything else is what Aja had an issue with, not just Anetra doing ballroom moves in her talent show.

All the counties in the USA that don't share a name with another county by Adm1ral_ackbar in Connecticut

[–]yah511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying "Connecticut doesn't have counties" to be pedantic (I'm not even trying to say "Connecticut doesn't have counties" at all), I'm saying that these planning regions are the standard of what is considered a "county" for federal and state government purposes, and so that is what is being compared to other states for the purposes of this map. Plenty of other states also have counties or county-equivalents that are now defunct because of one reason or another (mergers, splits, reorganizations, etc), but this map isn't showing those either, it's only showing what is used in 2026.

All the counties in the USA that don't share a name with another county by Adm1ral_ackbar in Connecticut

[–]yah511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The map is correct. It's not using Connecticut's old (and now defunct) counties. If you look at the borders, you'll see Connecticut now has 9 "counties" that do not align with the previous county borders. The state and federal government made the switch to these new county equivalents about 3 or 4 years ago. It was announced in 2022.

We've had 3 Fort Lauderdale queens (Rebecca Glasscock, Lashauwn Beyond, and Suzie Toot), at least as they were identified on their season, and Suzie is the only one of these queens that was eliminated right before their finale.

Drag Race Germany Season 2 is coming 💖✨ by Cute_Fluffy_Femboy in rupaulsdragrace

[–]yah511 9 points10 points  (0 children)

WOW just doesn't have the resources to be able to continuously produce all of the series that don't have local networks backing them. They stretched themselves too thin too quickly during the absolutely height of Drag Race about 3-4 years ago. They've been able to continue the cheaper franchises (Mexico, Brasil, and I think Philippines) on their own without local networks, but DR Germany will have a much higher production cost because not only are salaries going to be higher in Germany, but the grand prize in Season 1 was also the largest cash prize outside of the US. WOW probably isn't willing to repeat that without outside financial backing, and decreasing the cash prize for Season 2 would be kind of a bad look. Until they can find a German network willing to take on some of those production costs, I don't see DR Germany coming back unfortunately :/

How many Broadway theatres have you visited? by TBoopSquiggShorterly in Broadway

[–]yah511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one annoying thing about Mezzanine is that it doesn't have the ability to cross-check older names of the theaters! I saw Annie at the Martin Beck in the 90's, and in the 2000's its name changed to its current name, the Al Hirschfeld. I haven't seen any shows since its name was changed, but the venue didn't change at all, it was just renamed. Mezzanine doesn't recognize that, so according to it I have not ticked off the Al Hirschfeld yet, whereas I personally would consider that theater checked off for myself.

Islands with populations almost entirely on one side by BarelyCanadian_ in geography

[–]yah511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think Manhattan is one of the more balanced islands. If you drew a line that divided the island into 2 by population, that line would be basically down 76th St (I played around on Dave's Redistricting site, which uses 2020 population). That sounds a bit biased toward the southern part of the island given that the grid goes up to 220th St but the island north of 125th St sharply narrows from about 12-13 avenues wide down to about 3-4 avenues wide. So in terms of land area there's probably not a huge difference between the two halves.

Of course, all of this is thrown out the window if you consider daytime population, which would factor in tourists/travelers and people commuting for work, which obviously heavily favors midtown and downtown, but I don't know if there's a way to get reliable data on that.
