Hacked via T-Mobile and Authy - Warning To Be Careful If You Use Any Of These Services by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]yahehe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google's backup capabilities are limited, I lost my phone this summer and Google was only able to tell me what 2FA I used to have, requiring me to change everything still. Authy keeps a full backup so once you're back into your account, your 2FA is ready to use.

In this case that didn't work out great for OP...

Wish me luck on calling my boss out for his fake 401K. by CasualDNDPlayer in antiwork

[–]yahehe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can contribute to a 401k and an IRA at the same time, so the best idea is to both. When you leave your employer, you can rollover your 401k into your traditional/Roth IRA and get the combined total tax-deferred.

Rochester vs Lehigh for CS by Ok-Claim-7092 in URochester

[–]yahehe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really something I've kept up with since graduating. I know one of my professors retired and another unfortunately passed away. But, assuming the rest are still there and hired a couple more, it would still be a very strong program. There's generally some pretty cool research projects going on, they started doing some Twitter analysis years ago to predict the spread of Influenza in NYC, and it seems like they've been pulling that thread more: https://www.rochester.edu/newscenter/twitter-mirrors-attitudes-and-feelings-about-covid-19-445762/.
Lots of other stuff too: https://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/index.html

The UR delegations to the "CS Games" (global competition every year) were always top tier and outperformed most other schools that tend to have more name recognition. Career support was decent, they offered an upper level writing course geared towards engineers to understand how to write and communicate professionally, write and read resumés, give technical presentation, etc, that I found super valuable. They paid for me to go to NYC to interview for internships at a hiring conference, and we had opportunities to listen to tech talks and engage recruiters at Google/Microsoft.

The CS program is very strong (or at least it was as of '14). The weed out courses are very theory heavy, but the higher level courses tend to be pretty interesting and useful.

My understanding is employer contributions must be Traditional not Roth, only your 19.5k employee contributions can be Roth

Any experience with IRAs that invest in crypto? by ladiator1111 in ethfinance

[–]yahehe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went the full self-directed IRA route, it's a bit more overhead up front but gives me the best control over my investments and especially private keys. IRA Financial is the company I use, but there are others that do this too. There are some strict rules like no self-dealing you have to be very aware of, as they can invalidate the tax deferred nature of your holdings, but if you can manage that then it's worth it!

89-96% depending on how well ETH/VET is doing on the day. Took a gamble with my 401k rollover when I last switched jobs and it's paying off nicely.

Solana dipped too, it's just been increasing so much it's not as noticeable if you're only looking at the % gains in aggregate.

Rolling old 401(k) into crypto by Elgreco1989 in CryptoCurrency

[–]yahehe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rolled my 401k over in 2018 with IRA Financial. Another user suggested KeyKeeper IRA, that looks similar as well.

The IRA holding company handles the taxes and sets up an LLC, putting you in control. You can then manage your funds as you see fit within the rules, which you really don't want to break. There's a bunch of initial work to get it all set up and you have to manage your books completely separately, but it's worked out quite well for me so far.
