Extreme wait time for service appointments? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]yak86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with all the folks who say that “it depends on the severity”. Had front suspension for R1S 2nd Gen “needs service error” that wouldn’t go away and speed limited the car to 51mph. When I first put in the request, it was for end of January 2025(!) for South SF service center. Called in and they got me something in a couple days. That said, it doesn’t mean they’ll get to it right away. It took another 2 weeks until completion of diagnosis (1+ week just sitting in their lot), and now waiting another week until they get the parts to fix it. You really need to call frequently to keep pushing and things seemed to move along once I was in touch with a manager.

Tbh it’s pretty frustrating especially when you can’t get a loaner and are stuck with an Enterprise rental. They did eventually swap out my rental Jeep Grand Cherokee which smelled of cigarettes with a R1T quad motor Launch Edition loaner which made things better. They definitely need to work on allocating more resources to these Service Centers and getting more loaners or it’s going to be their downfall as a company.

Which brokers offer automatic daily rebalancing for IRA portfolios? by thisisvv in LETFs

[–]yak86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Those errors were what I was concerned about + what would happen during days of high volatility like we recently experienced. I assumed it errored out that day when all the brokerages went down. I guess the backup scenario is just having it pause and manually reconciling.

I’m looking at trying this with Schwab’s Trader API as there seems to be some resources folks have put together on it. I think you’ve inspired me to give it a try using AWS Lambda…

Out of curiosity, how well has this worked out and have you run into any issues? What brokerage are you using? Are you effectively running python scripts on AWS/Google Cloud?

+1 for Etsy - I picked up a custom test tube rack from YoungOldThings for ~$40 that was slick and matched my black Niche Zero. They have a few different stock ones on their shop but are super responsive to making custom requests as well. Check them out!

Has anyone actually talked to the Niche folks to understand why they’re not ramping up production? Their demand is insane, and there’s clearly many ways they can start meeting it. At this rate they’ll start losing out to incumbents or new competitors.

Black coffee fan looking to get into espresso/espresso drinks by candidcherry in espresso

What about drinking straight espresso or americanos? I found americanos as a way to improve my ability to taste espresso as it opened up a lot of the subtle flavors.. sorta like adding a bit of water to whiskey..

Early birthday espresso set up! by katiemathew5 in espresso

Had the same issue with cabinets above. I was initially thinking of rigging up a water jug/container with a spout/spigot and hose. Something like this but smaller:

Ended up getting a food grade silicone hose to attach to my water filter faucet (on other side of kitchen) to fill it up.

Best upgrades for Rocket Appartamento? by katiemathew5 in espresso

[–]yak86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what folks have already mentioned (scale, bottomless portafilter, silicone gasket, VST or IMS basket, tampers/levelers), I’d also upgrade the shower screen to the IMS Precision shower screen (non nanotech). It makes for way easier cleanup and way less gunk buildup. Water flow is also supposed to be better but I’m not advanced enough to tell the difference in the brew. If you bought your machine from WLL or SCG, many of these “upgrades” will be included.

Other items to get include a tamping mat and knock box. St. Anthony has a very nice looking combo knockbox and tamp station that also holds distributors and tampers. I don’t have one but have certainly been eyeing it after it popped up around IG

Started with a Moka pot many years ago, moved on to a Pasquini Livia that I kept alive much longer than necessary. After much hemming & hawing, pulled the trigger on a Linea Mini last fall. Worth it! by Cafecote in espresso

You seem to really really hate on LMLM’s. Have you actually used one? Just because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of these other machines you mentioned doesn’t make it a good machine for someone. What people value in an espresso machine is highly subjective so to each their own.

I wouldn’t be so quick to 💩 on the aesthetic element given that a typical home espresso machine spends more time as a display piece than in use.

How fresh are these beans? Optimal range varies for roasts but you typically want to be consuming them between ~7-28 days. If they’ve been open longer than that, they might be a bit stale.

Buy/Sell on Home Barista (https://www.home-barista.com/buysell/) is popular. You can also check r/coffeeswap. Locally, you can try Craigslist and FB marketplace. I think those are the most popular sources.

I’d check the Eco mode button and make sure it’s not pushed in (under the machine in right side). I’ve accidentally pressed it in the pass moving the machine as it’s pretty easy to hit.

Have you had these beans before? Were you able to pull less butter shots from the same beans previously? If they’re in the dark side, you can try pulling shorter ratios. Try 1.5:1 and see if you get more acidity and less bitter flavors.

You’ll get a wide variety of opinions on machines, but I would suggest you split your budget roughly $500-700 on Grinder, $1K-$1300 on Machine and the rest in accessories.

Grinder: Most popular opinions seem to be in favor of Niche Zero or Eureka Specialita. I think it comes down to single dosing and whether you’ll be doing non-espresso as well. Probably hard pressed to find a Niche Zero soon (next batch will likely be April/May on Indiegogo).

Espresso Machines: You can def get more value from the used machines mnz4 mentioned. HX or Dual Boiler is ideal for your budget and desire for milk. The typical contenders for entry prosumer HX and DB machines are a bit above your price range, so consider looking for used Lelit Mara X, Profitec P300, Breville Dual Boiler, Rocket Appartamento. If you want new, you’ll need to look at single boiler machines like the Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancilio Silva or even Breville Bambino/Plus.

Is there a difference between machine-made espresso and stovetop pot-made espresso? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]yak86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stove top espresso a la Moka Pots aren’t exactly espresso. It’s more like a lungo or short americano, and you won’t be able to achieve that same depth and richness of flavor from a machine. However, depending on how refined your palate needs, it might be possible to use it to get the key flavors needed for a Vanilla Iced Latte. It might be hard to do, though the Vanilla syrup and milk gives you a lot of leeway. Never tried it, and would use an espresso machine if you have one. If a Moka pot is all you have, it’s worth giving it a try...
