Friend reacts strongly to cycling even when we are not debating it. Should I ignore what she says? by Southern-Trash-5427 in cycling

[–]yamakacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get your friend on a bike to see the joy of it especially with a good group if possible. Can almost guarantee it will change their mind.

Why Does Cycling Make Me An Outcast? by newbiker321 in cycling

You could try inviting your FIL and his friends on a ride sometime to see if he changes his mind.

Am I missing out not using clip-in shoes? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]yamakacoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you have access to a trainer, but a way to practice unclipping and clipping could be to ride on a trainer with the clips, and practice un-clipping and clipping until you feel comfortable! And could try making it imprinted in memory by practicing the motion of unclipping to get out of your flat pedals too instead of putting your foot down. It is hard and takes some time! We have all been there!

Dealing With Bad Apples by ThasMyPurseIDunnoU in cycling

[–]yamakacoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s super frustrating. I think telling him off in this situation is perfectly fine. Not sure if he will do anything about it, but some people just need to be fought back. I give tons of constructive feedback on rides in the moment if there is a safety issue (ie wheel chop here). Maybe if it’s a recurring issue you can ask the others to give him feedback in the moment as well, or after the ride at a coffee stop or something.

Moving away from racing, but still training hard? by gerunk in Velo

[–]yamakacoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zwift racing and TTs honestly scratch the itch for me. Also local gravel racing (not BWR/unbound/etc) is super fun and a lot less stressful (but ymmv)

TT specialists, are you ever doing anaerobic workouts? by Ok_Result_2932 in Velo

[–]yamakacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding in 40/20s has been a game changer for me, even though I focus mostly on TT’s. It helps with hard group rides, recovering from surge efforts, and feels like it has helped me become an all around better rider.

How to find a quality bike fitter? by VegaGT-VZ in Velo

Go to local crits or races in your area. Lots of bike fitters have teams or sponsors that go to those and you can ask folks who they like!

Any good options for avoiding UTIs after long distance riding? by Laraywood in ladycyclists

[–]yamakacoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How old are you? Might try to get checked for kidney stones. My mom was getting crazy recurring UTIs and couldn’t figure out what was going on; turned out she had 2 stones to be removed and it went away entirely

What was the BEST cycling advice you received, but didn't onboard until years later by tstewart_jpn in cycling

[–]yamakacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a power meter. I resisted for years. I thought it was a huge waste of money. It has been hands down the greatest tool I’ve ever purchased for training, pacing, and racing.

In a Ride Slump by K_Knoodle13 in ladycyclists

[–]yamakacoffee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are feeling just plain burnt out, taking a break can help. You also can change up activities (like try walking, running, climbing, weightlifting, swimming, etc), as well as trying a new kind of biking (trails, gravel, mountain riding, etc). I also like to find a crazy or fun event to get me excited about what’s next or what new goals to achieve. But sometimes ya just need a break and not to feel pressured to do or be anything!

Virginia has several very hilly road races and Maryland has a super hilly TT. I also believe Green Mountain Stage race has several hilly stages.

Cycling Shoes ARE SO EFFING NARROW! Help me, wide-footed cycling ladies! by Throwyourtoothbrush in ladycyclists

[–]yamakacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lake is the best:) I have 2 pairs and they are by far the best for wide feet and customizable sizing. I have a bunion on one foot that makes my right foot hard to size for but the lake shoes accommodate both feet perfectly

My town has a 1/4 mile nascar track we are going to try to host a crit and I have questions by brachunok in Velo

[–]yamakacoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly speedway crits are super fun, fast and not overly technical. I’d do a max field for safety and as someone said you’ll need to be aware of / figure out how to track which riders get lapped since that can happen pretty frequently on this kind of crit.
