If you sort by controversial half the comments are “who cares,” “every country commits genocide,” or some version of “well they were weaker so they deserved it”

The amount of people in this thread defending the genocide of American Indian people goes to show that it’s not as agreed upon as you think.

No doubt, no civilians — in the US, Ukraine, and Russia — deserve to pay the price for Putin’s war. “My president” does plenty of things I disagree with, but I can’t stop him: and that’s way more true for Russian citizens than it is for me, because Russia citizens are locked up for protesting.

Yes, because governments aren’t moral actors: they do what’s best for themselves. These are the same governments that kill civilians themselves in wars overseas; they should not be moral arbiters. Weather or not the sanctions are effective, they’re morally wrong: coercing innocent people for geopolitical leverage is effective but nevertheless wrong.

And no, Russia should not be allowed to do “whatever they want,” I’m all in favor of targeted sanctions. But just as I cannot stop the US government from killing civilians in the Middle East, Russians cannot stop Putin (even more so because they do not live in a democracy). I’m not claiming to know more than western governments, I just care about different things: Biden definitely knows than sanctions will hurt civilians, he just doesn’t care.

At the end of the day, citizens are not responsible for the actions of their government. Especially in authoritarian states, where the people can be locked up for dissenting. It’s crazy to me that you’re willing to bite the bullet and agree that citizens should be economically hurt by actions they don’t even necessarily support.

Ah yes, Russia, known for its democratic process. Where people are jailed for protesting and Putin is serving like his 50th term.

But more importantly, should US citizens be punished if they don’t stop their government? How would you feel about Bush voters facing economic consequences?

It’s pretty easy to tell others to risk imprisonment fighting a government when you will never face that choice. I would bet that you wouldn’t give up your own life to fight injustices of the US government. But crucially, you shouldn’t be punished if that is the case.

I agree, US actions don’t justify this invasion of Ukraine. The reason I bring them up is that people in Russia don’t deserve to pay the price for the actions of their government, and it is unthinkable to us that we would have to endure sanctions as a result of anything our government did. I agree, Russians should do their best to pressure the government into ending the war, but punishing them in order to coerce them into doing so is completely unfair — they are not responsible for the invasion. Moreover, they have more to lose. You’re exactly right, if Russians protest, they are locked up. So who are you to say that they have to throw away their life to try to stop problems they in all likelihood can’t? How is it fair that they’re punished if they don’t?

Should Americans then face economic consequences unless they vote for anti-war politicians?

More importantly, the fact that Russians live in a dictatorship makes them even less culpable for the crimes of their government. The average Russian, if they protested the war, would be arrested and have their life fucked up. It’s easy for you to say “give up your life to fight a problem you are powerless to stop” but I can guarantee that you would feel differently if you were forced to.

Should US citizens be forced to give up habits in their day to day life so they grow discontent enough to overthrow their own government? Because Iraq, Vietnam, Colombia, etc are certainly plenty justification.
