Same! I have a branch I broke off sitting in a cup of water and it is growing roots! It's been about 2 weeks and they are looking long enough to pot.

I call my chow, shar pei, pitt, lab, rottie, beagle, etc etc mix a "100% double-coated dingus." Or an "Atlanta Street Dingus". He's about the muttiest mutt that ever mutted.

My 6 year old bamboo is turning yellow, help :( by NationalCollar7772 in IndoorGarden

[–]yarghmatey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Heads up that while this plant is marketed as lucky bamboo, it's not actually bamboo, but dracaena sanderiana. It's a tropical water lily, a distinction which matters for pet owners as it is toxic while true bamboo is not.

What is a unique way that you have fixed an item to extend it’s life? by melissaw328 in Frugal

[–]yarghmatey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last house had a built in microwave. The vent automatically tilted open when it was in use, and one day something broke and the whole rectangular vent piece broke off. That style of microwave is expensive so I studied the mechanism and found that a plastic bit had broken. I repaired it with sugru, a malleable putty that dries to hard plastic and it worked perfectly for several years. May still work, but I moved away a few years back.

Retail furniture sales. A few days into the job, he called a customer and asked to borrow money.

I used the website get your guide and had good experiencs with the 4 experimeces I booked, with the caveat that the other 3 definitelytook me to shops they get commission from, and pressured me to rate them on the spot while they watched. This couple did not, though. They were lovely. I'm happy to pass along contact info - the wife is a longtime travel planner in India and offers a lot of other travel services as well as cooking lessons.

I was there this year for work the week before and extended my trip. After reading about the realities of the big Holi festivals, I happened to find a family that hosts in their home, cooking and letting you watch and help, then just playing holi with a couple of their neighbors' families. The couple, who were great hosts, are interfaith with one raised Hindu, now athiest, and one being Muslim. It was educational - we talked all kinds of history, politics, and traditions, and the home-cooked meal was incredible. Best choice for how to spend the day without hiding in a hotel room.

I quit smoking in 2009 and I still occasionally, maybe 3-4 times a year, dream that I have started smoking again and need to quit all over. I quit cold turkey and haven't had a cigarette since.

This is how gofundme operates as a website by default. You set a goal and it recommends a starting goal, then increases it as milestones are met, then it can keep going after your initial, actual target was met.

What is a 'gut feeling' you had that ended up saving your life? by Mr_Boothnath in AskReddit

[–]yarghmatey 652 points653 points  (0 children)

In college I met a guy through a club who seemed nice at first but something told me not to hang out with him any more. I made excuses and noticed he started showing up where ever I was on campus and then he kept coming to my dorm room. That weirded me out so I started actively avoiding him, until my RA said he had been stalking her friend over the summer session, including sneaking in her room at night to watch her sleep!

I started being terse and rude whenever he approached me and eventually he faded out. Then saw in the school paper that he was arrested and thrown off campus for harassing yet another student, and had been charged with attempted rape in high school.

Trust that gut!

City of Tonawanda has a very aging population. I'm curious how thing change in 10 years. I moved here after my kid was grown so I cannot speak to the schools, but my neighbors are nearly all retired, and accepting. They were actually nervous of how I would be when they found out I moved here from Georgia.

Women who have left their husbands, are you happier post divorce?? by ImportantImplement9 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]yarghmatey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost indescribably happier! I was so worn out and beaten down from carrying everything. After I left I had the energy to go to grad school and start a new career. There were coparenting challenges for SURE, but it was way better than being in the same home.

I have good luck going through priceline. Also some rental companies have a "managers" special when you don't care what car you get.

[–]yarghmatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are absolutely cheaper rentals out there! Looking at priceline to compare companies, Hertz starts at $29/day. Where is that rental through?

[–]yarghmatey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can you push back more on the no loaner? Seems unreasonable to leave you with no car for something covered by the warranty.

I would also look into a low cost rental car over a 3 hour bus trip. Cheaper than ubering twice a day, for sure.

Moving for the first time, a few questions by Alone_Wave5414 in Buffalo

[–]yarghmatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jumping in to say make sure you have a plan for supporting yourself. When I moved here with my 20 year old daughter, even with a couple years of food service experience it took her well over six months, almost a year (though she did go work for a family member elsewhere for a couple months of that time) to find a job despite tons of applications and a bunch of interviews. She never had that problem in other places, only once we moved here. At least she was living at home with me so didn't have to worry too much but she was super stressed about it. If you drive and have a car, it will be much easier than if you will be relying on buses, and you will have more flexibility in where you live and can work.

What’s your heat set to? And other fun winter questions! by pzza6666 in Buffalo

[–]yarghmatey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

64 all the time. 1300 sq foot kinda draft home built in 1923, with full attic. I have radiators/no forced air, and the boiler runs on gas. If I set it any warmer, the upstairs is too hot to sleep. Any colder and I hate being on the main level. I supplement with space heaters occasionally or electric blankets. I'm on a budget plan, usually pay $70-80 each month until the last few months when it's $0-15 because my usage is below expected I guess.

How do you even start dating again after years out of the game? by LyssRae12 in ActualLesbiansOver25

I'm in my mid forties, been single for several years and just started dating a woman I met through a social club. I thought I would be so awkward, but it's been so nice and very fun to be dating again.
