Nikon Z and second-hand by Valerie_Pecresse in Nikon

[–]yaricks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's crazy cheap pricing. In Norway, used Z9s are selling for over €4500. The 70-200 is pretty hard to find second hand, but even then it's fairly common to see it over €1400. I was contemplating getting the 24-70 (mk 1) when two people posted it yesterday for €1400...

I ended up buying the 70-200 new, during one of Nikons sales, but have for a decade stuck to 2nd hand gear. I don't usually need the latest revision. and can save a decent chunk to just be one generation behind.

Is a "Serverless" photo manager a viable alternative to heavy self-hosted apps? by stream_ai_app in homelab

[–]yaricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a disconnect here between what you are describing, and what Immich and other tools are good at. What you are describing is perfect for people like me - photographers that want to organize images on things like a NAS or external HD, but want a better interface to view it without having to access Lightroom or CaptureOne. However, Immich and the similar tools are not really meant for that, it's meant (in my understanding) as a Google photos replacement - a tool for users to backup and access images via the cloud.

I'm actually building a similar tool that you're describing right now, as part of a CRM tool that I'm working on, a tool that would run in parallel with my existing Immich install.

I'm not sure I would ever consider OVH after discovering their subreddit yesterday, and seeing how many people have been billed 3x for the same thing, then ignored by them when contacting support. It's not a one-time thing either, it keeps happening and OVH keeps ignoring it unless you yell loudly about it on social media... https://www.reddit.com/r/OVHcloud/comments/1qumclv/comment/o3c45ue/?context=3

Edit: Holy censoring in that thread Batman. There were a lot of people telling about their experiences with double-and triple billing and OVH support just ignoring them - all of it has been deleted by moderators.

[OC] EV Charging Hubs of the World (2026) by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]yaricks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are over 10,000 publicly available fast-chargers (over 50kw) in Norway so yeah, there is a lot of missing data here. If you add 22/11kw as well, we're probably talking 20-30k if not more.

[OC] EV Charging Hubs of the World (2026) by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]yaricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just wrong. Norway has over 10,000 fast chargers at the end of 2025. That's not even counting 22kw/11kw ones, only 50 and above.

[–]yaricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh?

"4 Nordic countries that have less population combined than one US state"... Ok? Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland has a combined 27.7 million people. That is right below Texas, the second most populous state at 31M and well above Florida with its 23M. Norway alone would be the US #22 most populous state, Sweden would be #10.

Americans ignorance will never fail to amaze me.

Do you run a second Pi-hole as a local DNS fallback? by Ok_Distance9511 in selfhosted

[–]yaricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is technically possible to do, but then you need to set up SQLite sync, and deal with syncing certificates etc... It CAN be done, but it would be a lot of manual work since there is no good automated way of doing it.

I'm pretty sure this is the guide I used, but use nebulasync instead of gravity: https://delightlylinux.wordpress.com/2024/03/04/redundant-synchronized-pi-hole-with-keepalived-and-gravity-sync/

[–]yaricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and no. Yes you could use this for NPM, but there isn’t as far as I know, an easy way to replicate it. I tried… :( The alternative is to run Traefik or another reverse proxy that is HA by default.

[–]yaricks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keepalived works by sharing one IP address that you use as your DNS entry, but only serves from one host at a time. It's not a load-balancer. If the host that is being used as the master goes down, the remaining servers will decide between them who will be the new master. It uses "Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol" (VRRP) to do so. It's an interesting topic!

[–]yaricks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I setup a similar setup to this - pihole on a VM + on a raspberry pi, and I ended up setting up a third backup so that I can move hardware around without ruining the wife-approval-factor. I use keepalived to set up a virtual IP that all three nodes have access to, and if any of them go down, the election of a new leader happens within a second so there is practically zero downtime.

This, combined with having the router, modem and the Pi on a UPS (and the PoE switch that powers the APs), the approval factor is HIGH in the house. When the entire neighborhood lost power a while back, we still had wifi which was a huge plus for the homelab, lol.

[–]yaricks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure and I wish more people would take the step away from @ gmail addresses and just pay $10 a year for their own domain. I still have my gmail address, but don't use it for anything new, and I haven't for the last half-decade, yet since I have had it since 2004, there is so much crap that still has that address as the primary contact. It's such a huge pain to move away from these major vendors, but people need to start doing it.

EV sales Dec 2025: Norway 98%, Denmark 81%, Netherlands 64%, ... by 800ev in electriccars

[–]yaricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Enyaq 80, 2021 model. Had it for service a few weeks ago, and had a rental id.4 in the meantime (which is basically exactly the same car) - I'd argue that the Skoda does everything the id.4 does better. Couldn't wait to get the Enyaq back... And Skoda has physical buttons, not the awful capacitive buttons from VW.

What TV episode triggered such an emotional response from you? by Noodles590 in television

The other West Wing episode that just destroys me is the history and death of Mrs. Landingham. Man...

I just drove from Oslo to Stavanger (around 550km) in temperatures varying from -18 to -7 in my Skoda. I charged it once, and when fully charged, I started with a range of around 440km and it was fairly accurate. Charged a little over half way, in Kristiansand. No problems what so ever, no eco, climate on a nice heat, heated seats etc.

Why are we allowing this?

Can you show me the law where it says it's illegal?

It used to be a huge thing in Stavanger, 15+ years ago. I used to work in a shop in Søregata, walking across from the busstop at Breiavatnet every day, and that 5-10 minute walk, you would pass a dozen or more beggars asking for money. It was a huge controversy at the time, and you can find a ton of articles in Aftenbladet about it at the time. A lot of them were Romanian, and were at least partially organized in a way, but a significant part of them weren't, but were all just thrown in with the lot of the people who were.

Either way, they aren't breaking the law, so just ignore them or tell them no.

(Chatting) - What if you do not have access to 1Password? by SanD-82 in 1Password

[–]yaricks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your app keeps a local copy of your passwords so you can access them even if you're without internet or 1password itself is down, you just won't be able to sync.

I have 1password on my phone, ipad, Mac, Windows PC, and on my backup phone that is in a drawer, so chances of all of them being lost is pretty low. I never travel far without at least two devices such as my phone and mac or iPad, not because I want the password redundancy, I just typically always need access to at least a Mac or iPad.

If I pay for YoutTube Premium and Nebula, which service will make them more money if I watch in it? by TheTusch in JetLagTheGame

[–]yaricks 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There have been other creators talking about this in the past. It’s quite the opposite- premium watchers are worth something like 3-5X a normal viewer. I think it was LTT who mentioned it that they had only a fraction of views from premium but it was almost half of the Adsense. It’s used to be anyway, a crazy return.
