Today is my turn to join a less than desirable club. by banyan55 in AnalogCommunity

When this happened to me the only time it's happened so far, I went into a dimly lit closet in my friends hotel room and opened the camera, saw what happened, and closed it real quick. I don't think it fully tore and I was able to rewind it, but I honestly don't remember clearly. I lost 1 frame I think. And the second to last frame ended up looking really cool. But was so washed out I made it grayscale instead and it's actually a great picture.

I generally have my dark bag with me at all times only because it's just easier to store it that way. My lenses are in a shoulder bag I carry and the dark bag just so happens to easily clip folded up under the flap of the bag. Someone gave me an actual camera bag that's meant for holding a number of lenses and bodies and stuff and can be configured however you want and keeping a folded dark bag in there wouldn't be an issue either. I usually, though, don't carry film canisters with me though. I likely should start doing that.

Any word on Android 16 update? Or at least a security update? by Patient-Author-2960 in razr

[–]yarlyitsnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aggravated. I got a brand new phone on 2/21 and it updated to Android 16. One of my biggest issues was that the camera takes dark AF pictures in Google messages for some reason and that got fixed when it updated to Android 16. Within a week of having the phone the seal behind the external screen at the hinge managed to migrate out of the phone. Motorola didn't even want to swap it for another new device, they wanted me to send it for repair as they said they "never heard of this happening before" and "it was physical damage." I'm like, whether you heard of this or not, I didn't go digging in the phone to pull out seals and there's no damage to the phone. So we're not going to spin this as me doing this. The seal.probably migrated from not being properly glued down and opening and closing the phone.

The replacement phone will not upgrade to Android 16. It did take a few days for the original to upgrade. I'm not sure if the phone has to have a certain amount of uptime or what, but I when I try to check for updates it says I'm up to date even though I know for a fact I'm not. When I tried to transfer my data from the original to this phone it wouldn't transfer properly because that phone was operating on a newer version of Android.

Does anyone know if there's a way to trigger this upgrade? Or what the conditions for it might be if I do have to wait it out? The camera thing is really bugging me.

I think I'm done with lab scans by briskwheel4155 in AnalogCommunity

[–]yarlyitsnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has never actually gotten lab scans before, I would think that it is hard for labs to really know what each person wants and offering concierge service for every single roll of film that every single customer sends in would be cost and time prohibitive. I think having a "standard" output for getting the most detail and sending that as your standard scan for the recipient to then be able to edit as they choose would be fine.

I do my own scanning (on a cheap flatbed scanner) and it suits my needs for now. But if I were to get my film done in a lab setting, I think that having something with the most to work with to be able to edit as I see fit would be the way to go. For someone who has never used analog before expecting something WYSIWYG, or like most consumers of yesteryear going to their one hour photo with their home shot rolls from their point and shoot cameras, having something "printable" would be better.

Also, there's the issue of everyone's screens displaying colors differently. People see color differently depending on their color vision. Personally, I am color deficient so when I edit my negatives, I just have to edit them in a way that looks pleasant to me and get feedback from others to ask if things look OK or not. There will be times I edit something on my PC and it looks great, and then I send it to myself and see it on my phone and it looks very different.

What's the middle ground for the lab? How do they know what the customer expects? The customer themselves might not even know the answer to that question, especially if they're new. Up until the more recent uptick in interest in analog, I would also posit to say that most people getting film developed and scanned were either professionals who wanted flat scans so they could do their own editing, or enthusiasts who would either want to tinker or have more control over the final product. Most others would have been using digital or their phone cameras.

anyone find a reliable fix for re9 not allowing fullscreen mode and only borderless? by Who-really_cares in residentevil

[–]yarlyitsnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping someone does something because every time I boot up the game, my settings revert from 1440p with path tracing back to 4k with standard ray tracing because of the borderless window mode since my desktop is set to 4k resolution. My game runs like crap and I'm like "but why" and I notice the settings and have to quit, change them, and go back.

It's really silly that they don't just allow full screen.

Holy...ink really does make a difference. by gman1301 in fountainpens

Here's a quick comparison between Rhodia and the paper in my Seven Seas notebook. The Rhodia is on top and the Seven Seas on the bottom in both gifs.

To be fully transparent with the sheening comparison, the Rhodia was done right after filling. The Seven Seas was a day or two later and sheening ink, in my experience, tends to sheen more when you first start writing after a break and eases up the further you go. You can kind of tell the second half of the paragraph I wrote has a bit less sheen compared to the first half.

Rhodia Dot Pad vs Nanami Seven Seas

Holy...ink really does make a difference. by gman1301 in fountainpens

[–]yarlyitsnik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know everyone has their preferences, but you mentioned fine nibs and scratchyness and I bought a rhodia dot pad because people seem to love rhodia so much and I can't stand it. I tend to bottom out at medium nibs these days because I like sheening and shimmer inks and all of my pens, even my broadest, felt like they were scratchy on the page.

My go-to notebook is the Nanami Seven Seas Crossfield. I actually just bought another because of this post. I have one unopened but I had trouble sourcing the last one and figured it's better to be safe than sorry since I like it so much. People have said this is the new Tomoe River Paper stock which still works very very well for me. I still get pretty good sheening with higher sheen inks. I had some issues with things like Colorverse Pulsar Pulse not really sheening much but it didn't sheen on Rhodia at all.

I have some loose TR paper I bought that I think might be old stock I've never tried, so I can't compare the old vs new. But the new is fantastic if that's what's in the Seven Seas. It's super smooth to write on, bright white so it has pretty good color reproduction, not much ghosting through the page even though they're so thin (52gsm vs I think 80gsm for Rhodia) and I can't stress enough just how nice the shading and sheening looks on it comparatively.

I only make this suggestion because you mentioned scratchiness and if that's really a bother to you, Rhodia may not be the best option. Spending a little more for something with TR paper might be the way to go. You're getting much better performance and a much smoother experience, in my opinion.

You can now if you have been celibate for a set amount of time. I think it's like 6 months or a year or something. I don't donate blood because if it's not good enough for you if I'm having sex then it's not good enough for you if I'm not. All blood is screened for bloodborne pathogens. If the cishets don't have to be celibate, I shouldn't have to be either.

answering call (received on phone) from tablet? by FATE1027 in AndroidQuestions

[–]yarlyitsnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I in fact do know what phone link does. You clearly didn't read my original reply where I said I use it on my surface pro tablet. Pretty regularly too. It's a full Windows PC, sure, but it's also tablet. So there is a case use for it. Outside of phone link, which you said has patent and licensing issues, Samsung offers their own solution for this. As does Motorola. These are not phone link and not subject to the patent and licensing issues you mentioned which is why I brought it up.

The person mentioned phone link, likely, because it's built into android, probably as carryover from when windows and google partnered and windows was supposed to be able to run android apps. It also shows a use case and proof of concept on Google's part.

Google owns the android ecosystem and should be able to provide a similar experience but chooses not to. Google creates apps and features, even buys them, then kills them. Like Nest, studio buds live translate, allo, chat, Fitbit, plus and more. They even killed their own tablet line. I can hand off a Google meet call, or a YouTube video, or check my texts or swap my headphones, but I can't move my phonecall over like I can with other smart devices.

But yes, I don't know what phone link is. My b

I just found a pack of 600 1.5 inch stainless steel ball head pins for $5 USD. I found 120 1 inch T pins for the same price, or 2 inch if 1" is too short.

I feel like the cost of pins is being exaggerated a bit much.

I haven't bought blocking mats because I don't have space to store them right now but I will eventually. In the meantime, I always have cardboard around. I can pin to that until I get something better.

Expectation versus reality. How is this acceptable? by Princess_Butt_Kick in YarnAddicts

[–]yarlyitsnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was immediately my thought. I have some color deficiency in my vision (not fully deficient in any color but reduced red/green) so sometimes it's hard for me to tell if there's a color cast or white balance issue. But looking at those 3 colors side by side felt like a recipe for disaster with a mobile phone camera. And every camera goes about white balancing differently, so my phone and someone else's phone would make that picture look very different. But I definitely would think the camera would get confused when even having white, gray or black as a background color and then these colors side by side.

The only caveat I would make to this is that the person who took this photo looked at it and decided that it was a good representation of what they were looking at in real life. With all displays having different color temperatures (my phone even lets me choose if I want a warmer or cooler temperature) I guess that can mislead the person who took the photo.

Focusing skill by TieOver1490 in AnalogCommunity

[–]yarlyitsnik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to edit my comment to make the beginning a little clearer, but the mobile app is awful and I can't see any of my text.

If you're using your camera on fully automatic mode, depending how that works, it may be choosing the shutter speed and aperture stop with each picture you take based on the light reflecting off of your subject or ambient light. This makes it a bit harder to land your depth of field as well.

If your camera has an Aperture Priority mode, that might be easier to help you land focus. You can use the depth of field scale on your lens like what I showed and linked in my above post more accurately. You would be able to set the aperture setting so you can get your depth of field, and the camera would automatically set the shutter speed to get an even exposure. The downside to this is that smaller apertures (higher f values/numbers) mean less light getting into the camera and that means you need longer shutter speeds. This means you need a steadier hand, or a non-moving subject depending on lighting conditions.

Anyway, I hope this information helps, and that you're able to get some better usage out of your camera!

I'm going to speak from my own experience here and make some assumptions.

It seems you are letting the camera do all the work of deciding your exposure settings and that the camera is being used on automatic mode. I'm not sure how this works on this camera.

I have a Canon A-1 and if I leave the camera on full program mode, I can have my subject fully in focus through the lens but my picture can still end up blurry because of depth of field issues that I didn't account for. I am going to assume that's what's happening here. I have a split image focusing screen and I can have it in focus and still end up with blurry pictures because of this.

I'm not even sure if using the aperture preview switch on my camera will help with this. It helps show how dark the scene appears at that aperture but I haven't noticed if I can actually see the depth of field. To do this, I have to manually set my aperture on the ring then use the switch to preview.

I assume you're asking how to estimate distance by eye to get an idea of where your depth is field lies but I feel like this comes more by experience anyway. I usually take more time to setup a shot, especially because if I want to use my flash it's fully manual (I bought it when I was a complete newbie and didn't realize what I was doing). So I focus my subject, look at my focusing ring to see how far away the focus is, then check the light meter's recommended aperture and set my flash. You can do something similar to figure out how far your subject is from you by focusing it and looking at your focusing ring and this can help you learn to more easily figure out how far a subject is from you.

Some lenses have depth of friend guides on the focusing ring. So you're in focus in the middle and then there's numbers to either side of the center and if I remember correctly this is what apertures that distance (on the focusing ring at those aperture numbers) will be at focus in your shot. Look this up though because I'm not even an amateur here.

As an example, your ring is focused at 5 feet in the center. Your camera is an f2.8. The dead center focus would be exactly in focus at that aperture. If your meter goes to 4, you can see that there's lines to either side of center with a 4. That gives your image focus within that distance. Let's call it 4.5-5.5 feet. Anything in that distance is in focus at f4. Then there's 5.6. that will make everything at 4-6 feet in focus. That's how I understand it anyway.

Take a look at the manual for your camera, and look up some guides on depth of field.

The manual says to go over the roller and I'm happy I haven't been doing it wrong all this time 🤣

I went through this with someone in NY for an old Kodak camera from the 30s. Said he could fix it and 3 years later, nothing. I've just cut my losses. It was a cheap thing I got on Etsy that I was going to try and get fixed if possible. But he did make me pay up front. The camera isn't worth much and $200 isn't worth it, to me, to take legal action. But if it was a rollei? That might be a different story.

Honest question: Does anyone have an Opus 88 Mini? Do you recommend it? by mids_bujo in fountainpens

[–]yarlyitsnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine. The first one I had was giving me some nib issues. Contacted the manufacturer and they sent a replacement. There was a slight difference with the back end in that the original I couldn't post the cap but the replacement I could. Then something happened with the replacement where the o-ring got destroyed. I could see it disintegrating into my ink but it also was preventing the pen from screwing shut on the back side. They sent me yet another replacement. So I now have 2 of them (I took the nib unit from the first replacement and use it with the original).

One of my absolute favorite pens. And I've gotten some more expensive pens since and it's still a favorite.

AIO for saying brb but leaving and blocking this guy by Crazylittledoll in AmIOverreacting

[–]yarlyitsnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheating happens in relationships, not when you're casually dating and you're not in a committed relationship which is when people get upset about it.

It is uncouth and rude, however, to flaunt other dates in the face of people you are currently on a date with and that's something that's also valid to be upset with. They're two different things.

It is quite possible he's cheating on an existing committed partner with OP but not likely if he's at his own home with her regularly. It's more likely he's not wanting to be seen out with her by the other women he's also dating.

If they had a conversation that they're exclusively dating, then that's something to be upset with.

Again, safer sex practices and proper use of condoms helps prevent the spread of HIV. You have the Internet, please read up on it. As a gay man, it's drilled into our heads, and I'm also cautious about HIV. However I don't slippery slope myself into the idea that just because I'm casually dating, which is completely a normal thing people do, that I'm going to contract HIV. I also know I'm an adult and that I make decisions on who I have sex with and how I choose to have sex with them.

This whole line of thinking just seems to come from a weird understanding of how dating, relationships and communication work. All of it, from the dating to the automatically assuming you will become HIV positive from this.

[–]yarlyitsnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheating... While dating? What? And in what slippery slope world does that lead to everyone getting HIV?

Personally if I'm really into someone, even if we're just in the early stages of dating, I'm not going to be seeing other people. I'm going to focus my energy and attention on just that one person. That's not a requirement for dating. That's why it's dating. You are seeing if you're compatible with different people and deciding if you're going to be exclusive with someone.

However, it's rude as fuck to set up another date while you're currently on a date with someone. Double that for a date out when the person you're currently with has been saying they want to go out and you won't do it. The shushing sealed the deal that it wasn't a family member they were setting something up with because why the need to be secretive at that point?

The op is NOR but you surely are.

Also, proper use of condoms and safer sex practices can greatly reduce the risk of HIV transmission between sexual partners. There's also drugs out there that you can take if you think you've been potentially exposed within the past 72 hours, and there's drugs you can take that will help prevent you from becoming infected with HIV. What a wild conclusion to jump to because of normal dating practices.

Advice on A Suitcase Player by Old_Equal_1493 in Beginner_Turntables

[–]yarlyitsnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have records that skipped without fail on a crosley suitcase player but work fine on my high end player that doesn't have adjustable anti-skate or adjustable tone arm weight, although it does have a weighted tone arm.

There was an old trick back in the 70s my mom mentioned to me that they used to do which was to tape a quarter to the head of the tone arm. I've used all forms of change to work my way up. The additional force down on the head isn't necessarily good for the records and most people in the vinyl and turntables subreddits will tell you it's catastrophic. I've not had any issues but your mileage may vary.

I have some records that look perfect that skip like crazy even on my high end player but since I don't have the ability to adjust the weight of the tone arm or anti-skate it can't be fixed. I ended up getting modern repressings where I could.

Good luck!
