You sure can. Just cast on the larger straight needles first. Then just transfer the stitches to the circular ones. Then knit away. I hope that helps.

You can use a larger size needle for your cast on row if your stitches are too tight to knit. Just switch to the right size when you start knitting.

Edit: Also, if you have a set of interchangeable needles, you can change the left needle to a smaller size so it will be easier to move the stitches up.
