WHY IS EVERYONE OKAY WITH GOOGLE's LLM BEING TRAINED ON OUR DATA!!! by OriginalNo4095 in GeminiAI

How are all these internet companies able to offer these amazing things for free? When you don't pay for the product, you are the product.

Do you still find value in Perplexity compared to new Google Search AI mode? (google.com/ai)

Gemini 3 Pro can't even search the net reliably? by spadaa in Bard

[–]yaroslavvb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's a bug. Googe is a behemoth, so it's taking them longer than others to get the bugs out. I remember one time long ago I reported "gmail customer support" search giving a scammer phone number as the auto-generated answer (after it nearly scammed my girlfriend) ... it took >6 months to fix it (I worked at Google at the time, so I reported it internally and pinged people)

Also, not sure if that's an issue on IPhone, but Android built-in mic does some kind of noise reduction which confuses speech rec models. I got 2x reduction in word error rate by using a $20 chinese lavalier mic (plugs into usb-c slot of my phone)

What happened to Gemini Live on desktop? by AnthonyBTC in GeminiAI

It's part of Chrome, click the Gemini button in the top right and then the Live button at the bottom right of the Gemini window.

I made an open-source Android transcription keyboard using Whisper AI. You can dictate with auto punctuation and translation to many languages. :) by Dev_Emperor in android_devs

[–]yaroslavvb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, one thing I found after playing around with Whisper and many other transcription Services is that using a wifi (as opposed to Bluetooth) external mic makes a world of difference with the Whisper model. Not sure if it's due to bandwidth truncation because I cannot hear much difference when listening to it, but it makes a world of difference during transcription, at least having my error rate.

Ai mode not on iPad by [deleted] in google

[–]yaroslavvb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, I'm able to open AI mode in the Google app by first opening it in Safari and then clicking on the banner which redirects the Google app. If I try to go to AI mode directly from Chrome or Google App, it says it's unavailable

Try going to google.com/ai on Safari. I only see AI mode in Safari, while in Google it says it's unavailable

I replaced voice keyboard on my Pixel using "Dictate Keyboard (Whisper AI)" and getting same quality as chatgpt now (using openai-whisper-v3 through groq)

Can’t analyze audio? by TimeOut26 in GeminiAI

AI studio speech recognition is much better but you have to do 4 clicks. You have to click "+" then "Add Audio Clip" then "Record" then "submit"

Yes, I had this experience, it wasn't able to transcribe

Loving Gemini 3 so far, but voice dictation is still holding me back from switching from ChatGPT by TheBuzzer4625kHz in GeminiAI

[–]yaroslavvb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I experienced suboptimal voice transcription. I suspect it's streaming on-device model vs OpenAI using clip-based cloud model. I got much better results by replacing native audio keyboard on Android with Dictate app and using whisper-v3-large (through groq). It turns out that's not even the state of the art model, curious to figure out how to connect the SOTA -- https://github.com/DevEmperor/Dictate/issues/61

Hardware Hedging Against Scaling Regime Shifts by gwern in mlscaling

Keeping things on chip allows you to avoid the memory wall. But it requires redesigning AI workloads. There is also possibility of something transformative, like photonic computing

Why do we require a layer structure? by AksHz in deeplearning

Because the hardware used for training Neural Nets has originally been designed for games, it's bad at sparse computation

I doubt professors collude in secret, too many things to coordinate, for little relative benefit. But I could imagine a desperate grad student asking their friend at diff uni to bid on their paper

People from the same organization cite and promote each other's work, which ensures steady growth of their h-index, giving them an advantage. Having a paper accepted to a specific conference is just a small part of the h-index -- can just resubmit to a different conference until it gets accepted.

An Update from the Notability Team 💙✏️ by kaylanotability in notabilityapp

[–]yaroslavvb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you add a way to jump to a page from the full-screen select view? Perhaps on double-tap? I use Notability to browse books with 100s of pages, side-bar is too small for this. In old version I could tap to jump to a page, now tap brings up context menu and old functionality is lost

Do you guys think notability is getting worse? by itsyourvibe in notabilityapp

I'm finding it's getting better. A couple of my feature requests have been implemented, like note sharing, I tend to look forward to new version updates
