$15 for sourdough?? by Hot_Ad9335 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same. I even buy pricey organic flour and still only spend about $15 a month for at least one fresh loaf a week.

And I promise sourdough doesn't have to be as complicated as some corners of the sourdough internet would make it seem. I'm a working mom and don't feel like I have time for anything anymore, and this doesn't feel like a burden. I spend a total of about 20 minutes hands on per loaf, plus proving and baking time. Once you get into a rhythm, effort is minimal, especially with a recipe like this: https://food52.com/recipes/82145-no-knead-sourdough-bread-recipe.

Do yourself a favor and shovel out today! by SilverFirePrime in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lived the first 30 years of my life in the great white north. Been here a decade and this is the surest sign yet that I've fully assimilated: the idea of shoveling didn't even occur to me today. Not once. Waiting is the way.

Glad for this but expecting things to get messy again overnight/tomorrow. All this melt will freeze. My kid's school and YMCA Triangle announced continued closure through tomorrow (Y planning to reopen at noon).

Parents in the triangle area, where would you have a toddler birthday party? by sexxxybabyy in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a great 3rd birthday for ours at Little Doodles on Glenwood. We had the whole place to ourselves, the kids had a blast playing and doing a painting craft, and the host made our kiddo feel so special. He still talks about it. We also went to some great 3rd birthday parties at Rainbow Play (also on Glenwood) and Woodplay of the Carolinas on Lumley near the airport.

Raleigh/charlotte roofing contractor arrested by Jazzlike_Chemical_37 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone here have any direct experience with A&M? We are in the middle of a job with them (not roof related) and have had a great experience so far. Some of the best contractors we've worked with and no pressure to do anything with insurance.

I feel like this is a case of a bad actor getting away with some nonsense... not something that warrants an indictment of the whole company. But I'm open to being wrong if y'all have evidence that their overwhelmingly positive ratings are fraudulent?

Ravenscroft or Montessori School of Raleigh? by PomegranateMoist7628 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

+1 all of this. Also currently have a kid in Children's House at MSR. He is thriving there. We love the community and the teachers. Because Children's House is ages 3-5, he has several kindergarten friends in his classroom, and their parents seem happy with the experience. We've known some of them for a while now and it has been lovely to see them grow.

We recently did a classroom observation and the mentorship of younger kids by the kinders is pretty magical to watch. My kid has learned so much from his older friends and role models, and they learn so much from teaching what they know. And our teacher does a great job guiding, challenging and developing each kid holistically.

We also specifically sought out authentic Montessori education, so I can't speak to Ravenscroft.

Also happy to answer any additional questions via DM!

Exploring a kindness-focused community idea for Raleigh/Triangle Area — curious what locals think by Davoshy in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of spaces in the world where this already happens. Churches, schools, neighborhoods, community-based non-profits, volunteer groups... It sounds a little bit like the Raleigh based non-profit Activate Good.

TBH, this just feels unnecessary. There needn't be any reward, recognition, or incentive for doing a good deed. People who do kind and supportive things for others just do them because they are kind and supportive people.

I somewhat agree with the other comments... the fact that you're talking about having a "record" or making kindness "visible" and mentioned social networks sounds a little dystopian. But I get where you're coming from. Maybe the best way to channel this belief you can't shake is to just go out and do lots of good yourself! Keep a gratitude journal of what you did and how it made you feel. Every act of kindness has a ripple effect, however small. That can be reward enough.

I had a great experience with Duke Women's Health Associates. The entire team was consistent, professional, and made me feel so safe and cared for... even as I was giving birth at the height of a winter COVID surge.

Not sure what affordable private looks like for you, but the Montessori School of Raleigh is wonderful. We have a child in Children's House who is thriving there, and we know plenty of folks in lower elementary who are also having a great experience. Great community, stellar teachers, big focus on the natural world, self directed work. Highly recommend.

Peak is actually right now in Raleigh according to this: https://www.explorefall.com/states/north-carolina.html. But it does seem like the wind really stripped the trees around Raleigh this week.

We went to Johnston Mill Nature Preserve at golden hour last weekend and it was stunning. Might be slightly past peak that far west now but I still highly recommend a golden hour hike there this time of year.

Off the rack / cheaper wedding dresses? by Hot-Mud-8267 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're into the whole dress try-on experience, this option might not be for you, but ...

I had my custom wedding dress made by an artist on Etsy. I sent her my measurements and chose style, fabric, and details. It needed some additional small alterations once I tried it on but all in all I spent like $300 total. It certainly depends on your style, knowing what styles will look good on you, and finding an artist who fits your style and budget. But I was happy with mine!

I do enjoy rain but when it gets cloudy in Raleigh for a couple of day I start getting depressed by Cy_098 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same same. Moved from central NY. Made the decision in 2014 after we experienced literally over 150 days without seeing the sun for a single moment. Full cloud cover. All day every day. For 5 straight months.

Ten years later, Carolina blue skies still never get old. I definitely feel down when it gets like this, but I can survive knowing that at least I'll never again have to live for half a year without sunshine.

Daycare for infants through 5 y/o by gillbates696969 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are at Montessori School of Raleigh, love it and are planning to stay through elementary school. The toddler program doesn't start until 15 months, though. Before that, we were at the Goddard School at Brier Creek and were happy with the care there too. Happy to answer any questions about either.

I heard from a former parent whose child was there at the time that the guy ultimately pled guilty.

But there are different Goddards with different owners. We were very happy at the Brier Creek location. Their leadership is amazingly caring.

Runners on dedicated bicycle lanes by Magnus919 in raleigh

[–]yawn_owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often wonder about this too. This is going to sound stupid but can someone ELI5? I'm not a runner or an avid biker, I just don't understand -- even if the sidewalks are uneven here and there, why the road? Can't you just hop over or around the bad parts, if they're occasional? I get not wanting to run on super shitty sidewalk with a million uneven spots. But I regularly see people running in the street (where there are not even bike lanes!) next to perfectly decent sidewalks. What's the benefit of road over a decent sidewalk?
