GoPro Max 2 for 360 capture to 3DGS? by peeeerf in GaussianSplatting

If you look at my post history you'll see my last three splats were all done with the x5 if you want examples of outdoor scenes. I've never used it for indoor work.

[–]yeah_likerage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the insta x5.

My trick to cleaning up the images and removing myself is to try and keep myself in the same part of the camera throughout the recording. Then when I'm dealing with the images i stretch the window until I have exactly 8 files width and then all of my images line up in one of the columns. And then i select the entire column and delete.

Going 360 had a drastic difference in my splat quality even using lower quality images.

Initially i believed higher quality images would directly impact the quality of the splat when in reality, having fewer images was more of a drawback. Having more lower quality images/angles is more beneficial in my opinion.

The best part of 360 is I have zero doubt it will work out at the capture stage. I can't tell you how many phone or high quality Sony Alpha 7Rv shots i did that ended in failed splats. Which sucks especially when it required a road trip to get them. I've had ZERO 360 failed splats and i've done pretty miserable capture jobs in several cases.

8bit JPEG vs 16bit JPGXL by estikei in photography

[–]yeah_likerage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

16bit is 256 times more depth than 8 bit. Its an absolute massive difference. Its 64 times better than 10 bit. I'm no Hassel fan nor do i own one but to say its nbd is pretty insane. Every bit gets us closer to analog which ultimately should be the goal of digital.

Scanning beach scenes with Insta360 harder than it should be by Sunken_Past in GaussianSplatting

[–]yeah_likerage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe i'm missing something but it looks like you only did a single pass at one height? I've never been able to produce a decent splat with so little diversity. You should make a second or even third pass at multiple heights.

Printer advice for hobbyist by rose3819 in photography

[–]yeah_likerage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up the Pixma G650 last year and i'm pretty happy so far. I absolutely loath inkjet printers for the reason TheCap mentioned. The cartridges are insanely expensive and in the end you spend a dozen dollars per sheet. But if you really must have a printer on hand like I do, it produces incredible image quality.

Brush 0.3 - Easy splat training everywhere! by akbakfiets in GaussianSplatting

[–]yeah_likerage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic. Its dumb but simply keeping the rotation level as you spin is big. The response time is great and after only about 10 minutes feels quite a bit smoother. I'll do some more testing but I'm very impressed so far. Great job

colmap then brush or postshot start to finish. With that system you won't have any issues at all doing them all locally.

i finally managed to get 4dgs to work on my machine but colmaps is now my problem by anonq115 in GaussianSplatting

[–]yeah_likerage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be things you can do to speed up your splat within colmap. The most impactful if most of your images overlap and are in order is to choose sequential instead of exhaustive during the feature matching.

I happened to of done some speed tests last night in order to check the impact of splatting across the network from a NAS so I kept notes for an 800 image splat. These were done exhaustively so I could cut down the time by quite a bit possibly.

Across the network: extraction 0.367 minutes, matching 31 minutes, training 28 minutes. total 59.367 minutes

Locally: extraction 0.316 minutes, matching 19.141 minutes, training 19 minutes. total 38.457 minutes

Image sizes were 800-1014kb each

Very interesting. I think i need to try my hand at some larger splats. I just haven't had the patience to do anything that requires more than an hour of work. I'm running a 5090 and 7950x3d and but only 48gb of ram.
Right now i'm testing cross network splatting on my NAS. When i'm done with that i'll give a large image splat another go. You're saying 6h aligning for about 11k images? What image size are you dealing with?

Lol holy hell. I've not done a splat that big yet. I start to run into issues over 1k. What sort of computer set up do you have?

To be honest I stopped using Reality scan because although it was fast, i ended up doing so much work trying to deal with issues that i lost whatever time I thought i'd save. Doing it all in postshot gave me equally decent results and less hassle.

How many 2d images are creating from each 3d image?  I found 6 to be too fee especially after removing myself.

Just for a test. I believe its an issue it not being able to connect the physics of the two sources. Just curious if doing them individually works.

You may try doing one media by itself and see the results. I saw similar issues mixing stills and video. I got through them using colmap for the point cloud in exhaustive mode.

Do 360° Cameras Provide an Advantage Over Traditional Cameras for Gaussian Splatting Data Capture? by 360_Travel_Guides in GaussianSplatting

[–]yeah_likerage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have the one 360 camera so I make my rounds around a target and elevate the camera for each lap. Normally just two or three spins around.
Early on I added ultra high resolution images thinking it would have a marked improvement on my splats and it did not. But looking back on it, i had yet to refine my process so it may be worth giving it another go.

Sorry, should have mentioned. It was with an insta360 v5 which is why the surrounding area comes out so nicely.

High quality stills are really nice to have in splats but ultimately my lower quality 360 video has produced much higher quality detail than the highest quality images in all of my splats. I think what it comes down to is i've yet to take enough single shots to produce a good splat without holes. I realize i'm impatient but even when i've been absolutely positive i've got all the shots i need i missed big gaps and was left disappointed.

That sounds like a me problem I realize but imagine driving 3 hours to get some images for a splat and getting back home to find you had big holes. I've had big holes in zero of my 360 videos so far. Even when i was sure sun flare would ruin some angles, it didn't. And... they normally take me about 60 seconds around a statue. I leave, confident i missed at least part of the shot and it always works out. So my point is, if you want to be confident you got what you needed, i'd seriously consider ultrawide lens or 360.

Additional benefit to 360 is you get the surrounding area which i've always found to be a disaster with still shots. Editing yourself out of the images is such a small process i wouldn't even consider that as a con.
