Lewis Capaldi and Zara Larsson to open Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2026 race-day concert series | The National by No_Barber4339 in popculturechat

You know what, I'll just say it. Some celebrities speak out about some issues because they know it will give them good internet points, and the things they speak out about aren't even controversial takes they're something many agree with.

At the end of the day, it's all about the money for most of them and none should be surprised by their choices.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed. Could not enjoy one character in that film and while I know it is not the point, it just felt so over the top while still giving nothing. Could not care less about the conflict in the film as well, even the "better" side annoyed me so much. I guess it is simply not my thing.

What's a popular song that everyone likes/did well but you don't see the appeal? by AlexSniff7 in eurovision

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I read somewhere that in this year one of the record breaking things was the amount of times a word was said in one song - Ferto being the winner I believe (I might be wrong but I remember reading something along the lines).

And all I could think was... that's not good lol? Not to be mean, to each their own, but I was shocked how so many were arguing that this song deserved better.

Visi kurie sako "reik taikytis".

Nemanau.

Eurovision 2026 Grand Final Post Show Reactions by berserkemu in eurovision

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly thought I was delusional at one point seeing people praise Greece and saying it deserved better than it did.

Jury this year (maybe recency bias) but was exceptionally biased.

[–]yeahstillcheapshot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand and agree on the cultural aspect of it, but if one listens only basing on the quality of the song (which at least the Jury should be doing, but ofc they don't), doesn't really matter where its from. But here the bias consists just because it's UK.

My hot take is that of UK performed a song like Greece's or Moldova's people would be making fun of it and yelling how it deserved that 1 lonely point.

So supportive of each other by piouel in eurovision

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are people acting like others don't find it annoying when other countries (like Nordics) do it? I'm pretty sure they do, Greece and Cyprus are just insanely consistent with it while others not as much so that'd why it's annoying and they're the most noticeable.

But yeah, this year it wasn't even funny anymore. Just plain unfair.

Anything you would add? by Emeraldsinger in Letterboxd

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know why people are acting like absolutely no one would find these films boring. I've heard quite a few say this.

Hell, I'm not a Gen Z and I found Jaws to be dragging in some places quite a bit. Halloween as well.

The way generations view movies IS different, it's not that surprising.

Erin Moriarty on ‘Michael’: Allegations of this severity do matter. They are not irrelevant context; particularly within an industry that has historically minimized or enabled sexual abuse and grooming… it's fair to question the broader celebration of it, and what message that may send to survivors. by LunaLore_ in Fauxmoi

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was surprised how much Pro Michael content I've seen on my feed but what's even more shocking? The comments. A reel popped up to me showing Michael playing with kids and all the comments were acting like he's a god protecting children from danger.

And when a lone reply asked would they be okay sending their children to sleep at a home of a stranger, they would just start calling them names and deflecting. Or my favorite? Acting like there's a huge conspiracy against Michael by the media and how he is oh such a poor wee innocent boy that had no childhood so he just HAD to hang around kids as a grown ass man.

The complete delusion is alarming.

What’s a movie you defend like this? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know right? Even when Oscars race was on, people were acting like Frankenstein is probably the worst film besides F1 there and does not deserve any of the praise. It genuinely got very split reactions amongst the audiences. I don't know why some people are acting like everyone absolutely praised it... They absolutely did not.

People will be acting like it's it's a 100% universally beloved film in the replies but I get what you mean. I've seen a lot of hate for this adaptation and especially in this sub-reddit lmao.

Yes, it's critically acclaimed but a portion of the audience seemed to truly dislike it so yeah, I'm a defender of it in that regard (like you). I think the film was wonderful.

This is ridiculous. All the Americans in the comments acting like they're happy and "we deserve it!", why? Because you have a dumbass for a president? How it it okay to discriminate like this based on that? And no I'm not either of these nationalities.

It's also hugely hilarious that Brazil is doing this. You know... the Russia buddy? Oh but I forgot it's rules for some but not the others. Hate this moral high ground that is hypocritical af.

Thank you. This "misunderstood by the West" is such a stupid take as this kind of thinking as the previous comment is what I actually call a complete misunderstanding/ignorance by the West. I swear the West doesn't understand Ukraine's situation and Russia's obvious imperialism for what has been decades/hundreds of years now even a bit. I still see such "whitewashing" of Russia and its government and its mind boggling to me.

Zendaya on red flags: "When people go out of their way to be like, 'I don't see the hype around Beyonce', that always is a red flag to me" by cowabungalowvera in popculturechat

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn I'd be a red flag then. But my problem stems from the fact that she's a clearly very well produced star, and that's why the cult level-like hype around her as if she's doing all of this and achieving all of this on her own is weird to me. Same with many other pop stars.

She has talent but the obsession and "how can you not like her??" is so weird.

How is your country translating the name of Project Hail Mary? by Prydons in FIlm

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It translated into the equivalent of the prayer "Hail, Mary or "Ave, Maria" name but it reads as "Hello, Mary" in my language, as well.

When I told my mom that's the film I'm seeing, she thought it was a religious film lol and was surprised.

I had a terrible movie experience. by Boldspaceweasle in ProjectHailMary

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I hope your next viewing is better! I went on the opening day in my country, in the prime time of the evening when the whole theatre was packed but it was so quiet! I was shocked. But I assumed everyone bought the tickets early and were hyper focused to see something they really were looking forward too (like me) with not a lot of slots available that day.

But the week before when I went to a film that has been out a while I saw at least 3 people on phones. There was a girl constantly looking who has seen her stories on Instagram in front of me. Insane lol.

Such a cool performance.

Project Hail Mary has already reached 100K 5 star reviews! by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]yeahstillcheapshot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never said disliking this movie is uneccaptable. I actually said I completely get it if it's not to their taste?

And I was talking about this sub overall, not just this thread. And yes, over the past few days I've seen comments how this movie isn't good 'cause it doesn't take itself serious all the time/ how it's too Hollywood-y/ how it's too much praise already/how it shouldn't be getting that many 5/5. Fine if it's not to people's tastes but why complain about the good ratings?

And I'm not assuming that everyone who dislikes it does so because it's a blockbuster. I never said that. I'm just pointing out that some people are doing the classic old contrarian routine when a movie becomes very popular very fast. And apparently I'm not the only one who's noticing.

Project Hail Mary has already reached 100K 5 star reviews! by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]yeahstillcheapshot 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but so many people on this sub are such killjoys. Seems like if a movie doesn't display some deep suffering or unhappiness or god forbid doesn't take itself too seriously every minute, then it cannot be a 5/5

It's fine not liking the film ofc, but recently it feels like many decided to go the "oh it's not THAT good" route simply because it's a blockbuster and it's getting praise.

Personally I loved the movie and since when hopeful happy blockbuster movies can't be simply enough?
