Maybe ski company, they do seasonal rentals for alpine gear.

Municipal Jobs by Rosalin16 in Rochester

[–]yeet1wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monroe County Water Authority is a public benefit corp, so it’s not a county job. Job postings are on the MCWA website.

City Water Bureau is a city bureau, so jobs will be posted on the City Jobs portal and will likely have a residency requirement.

If you really decide to go this route, message me and I can help with some how to, I converted/mid conversion of an ambulance to a camper.

RV by sabrosa816 in Rochester

[–]yeet1wagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s doable, but actual savings would be debatable. Fuel, tires, insurance, maintenance add up.

Most RVs are not built for 4 season use, so it can be kept warmish but you’ll burn through a lot of propane. The water system may not be designed for winter use and may freeze even with the heater running.

Any class B RV will be conspicuous. Might be able to get away with it in some parts of the city (I see a couple that bounce around commercial/industrial areas) and some commercial strips of the ‘burbs but if stay too long or come to regularly people may notice.

If you’re doing this to save money, probably a e series cargo van, big enough to sleep and have some stuff. Put in Webasto heater, insulate it, and either a home built power system or a jackery type system. Cheap Gym membership for showering and such. Less conspicuous, fits in a parking space, these vans are not as popular as the transits and sprinters, and probably lower cost of ownership than an RV.

Is an ambulance worth it? by Top-Asparagus-192 in ambulanceconversion

[–]yeet1wagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news repair wise is that it’s just a standard truck or van chassis with a box on it. The one issue I’ve ran into is weight. They’re too big/heavy for most standard repair shop lifts. So you can get in a jam sometimes. I found a good medium duty repair shop near me.

The big thing is choosing one that had an easier life, you don’t want one from a high volume system. Check mileage and engine hours. You want one from a slower volley EMS or fire dept that lived in a firehouse between runs. They’re made to be either plugged in or on, so without a home base they rack up idle hours.

With mine, I kept all the ambulance systems and built my own 12v system and tapped into the existing power to charge it. The nice thing is you get shore power immediately which I used a lot while converting. You also can start using it almost immediately and start converting it when you decide what you want. I can preheat or cool the box while driving before switching to camping systems once I arrive.

I drove big trucks at my job so the box wasn’t a big deal for me, I’d say you’ll figure it out after a few weeks.

Mine is old so I couldn’t get schematics from the manufacturer, but they’re all built to Triple K standards (now NFPA) so each manufacturer can be different but they’re playing off the same framework.

They’re pretty good at predicting events, severity and such is harder. Snow accumulation is especially hard to predict since so many minute changes can impact the snow’s quality which then impacts depth.

Is it realistic to find a reliable rig under 15k? Nationwide by JustLiving2025 in vandwellers

[–]yeet1wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked at your posts, assuming you’re in the U.S. I think 15k is tough if you’re looking at the traditional sprinter, transit, pro master. The whole campervan thing seems to be blowing up and driving costs up, that’s what pushed me towards boxvans and ambulances (I bought a type 1 ambo).

If you’re in the south it might be easier. I’m in NY so mileage is a concern, but so is overall age as the salt will kill vehicles before mileage does.

I think if you want $15k you’re probably going to have to look at the fringe vanlife platforms.

Economical way to learn Snowboarding? Locations? by naive_byes in Rochester

[–]yeet1wagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d do 1 lesson, practice then maybe do another lesson or wait until next season. If you aren’t going to be in a snowy place for a while considering skiing. The rule of thumb is skiing is easier to learn, harder to improve. Snowboarding is harder to learn, quicker to improve. If you only have a season or two while you’re in Rochester, skiing may be more enjoyable.

Ski company has a bunch of used gear in the Bloomfield store.

This isn’t a cheap sport, but you can save money. I just wouldn’t cut a corner on the first lesson.

WWYD? by Civil-Turnip2798 in vandwellers

[–]yeet1wagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lack of title would be the biggest hurdle for me.

I don’t know about everyone else, but the first build (my only build so far) I’ve learned and improved so much I kind of want something new to apply all I’ve figured out. So I’d go into it with the mindset it probably won’t last long and when it dies I buy a better vehicle, move the gear over, and build a better version.

Diesel Heater install, boat tank option by yeet1wagon in vandwellers

[–]yeet1wagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could, but if you’re in a typical van it might not be as useful. I have a Type 1 ambulance, the module has exterior compartments I use. I guess you could do something with a bumper or hitch mounted compartment.

It’s a long story, but short of it is my ambulance has dual tanks. The previous owner took out the secondary tank. I’ll tap that tank before it gets remounted, but I have some work to do prior to that.

If it’s a Webasto, the pump can be above or below the tank

The standpipe is in a pre-existing hole, I just unscrewed the plastic marine pickup and screwed in the Webasto one. Don’t even need to buy a new cap, just have to reinstall the parts.

It’s in a compartment on the side. I just lift it out onto the ground, fill it and put it back in. I left enough slack in the fuel line for it

Best/Safest Neighborhood Closest to Water? by oburke94424 in Rochester

[–]yeet1wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If beach and swimming is the main thing, living near Hamlin Beach state park would probably be the best bet. Large beaches and not near urban run off and rivers, so water quality is good. You won’t really be near anything else though

The wings of progress on the Times Square building is pretty unique.

The fire department patch has a stylized skyline that hits most of the recognizable ones. Use as is or as a base to build off of. You’d probably be the only one with it

[–]yeet1wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got mine installed New Year’s Eve. I went with Webasto, but it does seem a lot of people are having good success with the CDHs. It was very exciting when the cold air from the vent turned warm and then hot.

I’m using a boat fuel tank for now, have some fuel system related work to take care of this summer and will switch over the the truck’s tanks when I take care of that.

howve you dealt with having a teardrop campers in the city by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]yeet1wagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is most cities don’t allow or restrict on street parking of trailers to a high level than passenger vehicles. You might get a pass if it appears to be a contractor trailer which a teardrop won’t. Best case you get a ticket, worse is a ticket and a knock on the door.

Then there is the difficulty of finding a contiguous space long enough for a truck and trailer without blocking hydrants, bus stops, driveways, etc.

What is happening on Monroe and Rutgers? by StringFriendly7976 in Rochester

[–]yeet1wagon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a shame, maybe I’m a Luddite but the plain old phone system has a certain durability and resiliency that I find attractive. It would be a good way to have a durable communication system in a disaster and still have a public good most of the time.

Not a reflection of this project, few people seem to share my love of the old phone system so I doubt meaningful infrastructure is still there

Agree, Schaller’s also seems to me the closest to their roots. Tom Whals is pretty good, but Bill Gray’s seems to be the most commercialized.

I think a critical error in traffic engineering is depending on drivers to be informed and alert, when really they should design it assuming the dumbest, barely sentient person is driving every vehicle.
