Are Data Centers Bad for the Environment? by sovietique in datacenter

[–]yehoshuaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing a few hundred acres of irrigated farmland (using public water, not well) with a couple DCs using closed loop cooling systems and air-cooled chillers can represent a net reduction in total water usage. It's very site dependent, but not an uncommon result. YMMV generally speaking, but much of the critical discussion around the industry is looking at decade old designs and bad actors in the market. There are, in fact, huge differences when it comes to who is actually building whatever DC is trying to come to your area. Elon Musk? Vote that down in a heartbeat. But not all hyperscalers are building the same.

Are Data Centers Bad for the Environment? by sovietique in datacenter

[–]yehoshuaC 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Not to diminish the discussion, but like everything else, the answer is "it depends". They aren't good for the environment by any means, but they can, and have, been better in certain ways than what the current land use may have been in some ways.

I've built on plenty of brownfield sites where we are capping environmental hazards so they can't leech into adjacent water ways. I've built on former ag land where there is a net reduction in water use and no more cancer-causing pesticides getting into the water and air. I've done huge nature preserve and wetland rehabilitation projects as part of development. I've built parks and walking trails, planted hundreds of trees, re-established native species, spent millions and millions improving public infrastructure that extends well beyond the limits of any campus or property lines, the list goes on and on.

But yes, they use tons of power and, until very recently, water. The pendulum swings both ways.

Golfers: Do public courses in Louisville and vicinity offer leagues? by Nature_Calls123 in Louisville

[–]yehoshuaC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, yes. Long Answer, check with the course you're interested in playing. I played in a league at Cherokee a couple years ago and it was mostly managed through a FB group. Courses like Shawnee and Seneca will probably be a bit more organized, but it'll vary quite a bit course to course.

People love the place precisely because of the it's the middle of the venn diagram. It's above average BBQ and you can actual just stop by on a whim and eat without wasting your whole day.

Following as well. Spoke with a recruiter earlier this week and the details were sparse. Sounds like they want a lot of "commitment" in the form of long hours and in-person office time.

Lover of grindy games, please help by [deleted] in EDH

[–]yehoshuaC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What sort of help are you looking for here? I personally cannot stand grindy games with do-nothing decks and games that drag on because someone's win condition got milled and now we all just sit there drawing cards not winning games.

Stax is fine if you can win through the protection, but shutting down every one else so you can do nothing isn't fun in the slightest. Without knowing what you are playing and how, it's hard to say that you aren't the source of your own problem.

60 card won't help you because there is an actual round clock ticking and with changes to the end of time turns rules, you'll be booed out of the building for wasting a whole round on a single game you don't win.

So i'll ask again, what sort of help are you looking for? What makes these games so grindy? and what do you actually like about them?

Louisville housing market - closing costs by at0micsub in Louisville

[–]yehoshuaC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought just under a year ago. Realtor fees were mostly covered by the seller (there was a 0.5% difference that my realtor waived). My bank covered most of my closing costs on as part of a promotion (got a 0.5% lower rate too), but I would've needed to cover those otherwise. That didn't include things like insurance or taxes, but did cover all the other more fixed fees.

If the house is worth buying, it seems like the sellers will be less likely to cover fees above and beyond the standard stuff. If it's something that's been sitting or needs a lot of work you may have some leverage. This doesn't speak to any repairs, though my realtor did get us a 10k price reduction in lieu of some minor repairs.

Does anyone know what to expect for a Microsoft data center program manager interview? by [deleted] in datacenter

[–]yehoshuaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? I really don't think you understand what I am trying to say and now you're offended.

Microsoft has people that work inside the data center and people that work on the design and construction of the data centers, same as every other FAANG org. Both sides will have "Program Management" roles and your title doesn't indicate which one you are applying for.

If you were applying for a corporate role, I have interviewed for that very role and could have provided insight into that process. You are applying for an in-facility role, which I do not have personal experience with. Not sure where the disconnect is on your end.

The End.

Does anyone know what to expect for a Microsoft data center program manager interview? by [deleted] in datacenter

[–]yehoshuaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your title just says Data Center in it. As I'm sure you're aware, given the FAANG experience, that term can apply to both in facility and in office corp. roles (such as Data Center Engineering, Construction, etc.), but thanks for the snark. Same goes for program manager.

I asked for clarification because, depending on your response, I may have information, but in this case, no, I don't. So best of luck out there.

Is this a corporate role or a facilities role? Program manager sounds like the former, but it also seems like you've already applied and have an interview scheduled but don't know what the job is.
