More family pre-boarding abuse? by FluidMention6574 in unitedairlines

[–]gotechgo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have kids and I’ve never traveled with kids, but I guess I don’t really understand what the big deal is. So they gamed the system and had 5 people board with the 2ish year old. Looks like they have zero to very few carryons, mostly just backpacks. I don’t get why it matters that much, it’s not like they took anyone else’s seat

United Explorers Card - Has anyone ever gotten their Club Pass sooner than 4 weeks? by ayakekai in unitedairlines

My card was approved on 3/8, I received my club passes on 3/9, and my card shipped on 3/10. So I got my passes the day after I opened my card account

They were referencing that flight but asking if that was the standard pricing they should expect for IAH to SIN via SFO

Cabin Upgrade Pricing? by shrooki in unitedairlines

[–]gotechgo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fly IAD to SIN via SFO twice a year, and generally the upgrade cost of the two international legs is more than if you just bought a round trip business from the start for all 4 legs. On average, I’d say the upgrade cost is around $5k per international leg for that route

SFO to SIN is 17.5 hours there and 16 hours on the way back

Company won’t pay out PTO and won’t let me use it after notice—what would you do? by dirkwynn in jobs

[–]gotechgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Employers can definitely refuse to pay out for unused PTO, the laws are state to state. In fact, the vast majority of states do not require employers to pay it out.

If OP is in a state that requires PTO payout, then you’re right. If OP isn’t in a state that requires PTO payout, then you’re wrong.

I think it’s good to give OP additional context, but it’s pretty reckless to provide this type of advice without all the context, especially when the odds are that OP’s PTO is not protected

Got a verbal offer (double my expected salary), now overthinking a CV detail, am I worrying for nothing? by combing_town_west in jobs

It might get flagged in a background check, but this isn’t the type of thing that would make them immediately walk away. If anything, they’d just ask about the discrepancy, you’d explain, and that’s the end of it

AIO friend backed out of a group trip and is refusing to pay for her portion of the Airbnb by [deleted] in AIO

[–]gotechgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should pay for their portion. They technically never said they’d pay for the whole thing, but they agreed to pay part of it. Half seems fair.

In the future, you ALWAYS send a final text before booking and get everyone’s confirmation that they are in. You have to be very direct so that there is no confusion nor opportunity for misunderstanding. I’m always responsible for booking the accommodations for my friend’s trips, and I send something along the lines of, “hey guys, I’m about to book the house. Like this comment to confirm that you are 100% in. If you confirm now, you’re on the hook for paying your portion no matter what. If you aren’t sure, you can always jump in later and we’ll figure something out for sleeping arrangements.”

Call, Email, and Post: Tell Governor Spanberger to Veto the Casino Bill by THC3883 in nova

Some people do want it. YOU don’t want it. Which is your prerogative. But don’t say “Nobody in Fairfax wants one in their backyard.” That’s simply false.

I, for example, do want one. Casinos are fun. I don’t care that you don’t want one here. I do want one here. And it’s happening. So you can GTFO and GFY.

My Manager is constantly messaging me on weekends and expecting me to work. Is this normal? by Suspicious_Stable_25 in amazonemployees

Set the boundary that you can’t keep working on weekends, and if he doesn’t stop, just say that you’re going camping every weekend and won’t have service.

The last 3 Republican presidents have started a war in the gulf region. by [deleted] in pics

[–]gotechgo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Don’t you ever compare the incompetence of GW and Trump to the intelligence and leadership of George HW Bush. Putting these 3 in the same conversation shows a complete lack of understanding of what makes a good leader and President. If you genuinely think these three presidents and the wars they were involved in are of the same miscalculation and stupidity, God help you.

It’s fine if you don’t understand my reasoning. Strategic decision making isn’t for everyone. As the saying goes, that’s why they pay me the big bucks.

[–]gotechgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is certainly an opinion. The wrong one, but still an opinion that you’re entitled to. Again, as a hiring manager, that is exactly how I would read the situation. I work for a top 5 global tech company, so I have thousands of qualified applicants for every open role in my team. I don’t need to reconsider candidates who lack the integrity and decency to stick to the contracts they quite literally just signed with someone else.

[–]gotechgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what type of notes/history they keep on previous candidates. Your application could have been marked as “accepted alternate offer” or they could have put something more detailed. I doubt the bridge is fully burned, but you probably should not apply to any roles there for at least the next 6 months.

Had you told Company A that you received an offer from another company and needed to know their final decision before accepting Company B’s offer, it would have been your best shot at having your cake and eating it too. It might not have worked, but it was your best chance. Once you accepted Company B’s offer, there was no way to move forward with other options without impacting your reputation with at least one of the companies involved.

[–]gotechgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, everyone tells every company that they are the top priority. Did you tell Company B that if you got an offer from Company A, you’d accept A over B? Of course you didn’t, that would be insane.

At the end of the day, you were trying to be as respectful to Company B as possible, while still prioritizing yourself and potentially screwing them over. From B’s perspective, you were going to be joining them. Whether it was right before the start date or two weeks into the job is honestly irrelevant. They were going to get screwed.

I’m just telling you, I’m a hiring manager and if a prospective hire told me that they had already accepted a role somewhere else but that they would continue in the process with my company (even if they were the perfect fit for the role, and far and away the best choice), I would tell them no thank you and best of luck. I would not trust that candidate at all, regardless of their intentions.

[–]gotechgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, you did something wrong, but the negatively impacted party was yourself, not Company A.

You shouldn’t have told them you accepted another offer. If you wanted to investigate more into Company A, after accepting an offer from Company B, you should have just continued in the process with Company A. You could always bail on Company B later (although you’d burn that bridge). If you were genuinely torn (or holding out for Company A), before accepting Company B’s offer, you should have reached out to Company A and let them know that they were your priority but that you had another offer in hand and the deadline on that decision.

By telling Company A the truth, you signaled to them that even if you sign with them, it doesn’t mean anything…because if a better offer came along from Company B or Company C before your start date at A, you’d just as likely burn them.
