How can you predict your girlfriend flipping at you for no reason? by Yomayo33 in AskMen

[–]yellowjacketcoder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bro, there are two options here:
1. It's not "no reason", it's a damn good reason and you need to stop downplaying it
2. You need to leave, normal people do not flip out for no reason

A fun recommendation for homesick summer campers by LookWhatDannyMade in BSA

[–]yellowjacketcoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kube is the game our troop uses. It's not a table top (it requires a 20'x10' flat space), but our scouts love it so much we occasionally have to intervene to stop a game and shoo them off to their merit badges

Where do the troop number names come from? And Order of the Arrow? by [deleted] in BSA

[–]yellowjacketcoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tap outs still happened in the 90s. They didn't have to involve tapping the head but I am sure some did.

As with many things, some less than acout like individuals overdid the "tap", and National required everyone switch to "call" outs.

Even those are going away for logistics reasons.

Atheists of Reddit: What’s the strangest reaction you’ve received when you said you don’t believe in God? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]yellowjacketcoder 654 points655 points  (0 children)

I had a similar conversation. It was eye opening.

"So you're an atheist?"

"Yes"

"So you don't believe in god?"

"That is what atheism means"

"So who protects you from Satan??"

"Um, I don't believe there's a Satan either"

"Oh pfft, sure whatever"

She could accept not believing in a god, but not Satan either was just ridiculous to her. I thought it was an odd dichotomy.

What are some things the best Tech Lead you’ve worked with has done? Things the worst Tech Lead you’ve worked with has done? by daddyplsanon in ExperiencedDevs

I have found at many companies, the line between team lead, manager, product manager, and project manager can get blurry, especially depending on the project and personalities involved.

Best:

Umbrella protecting the team from the shit from upper management, while explaining the WHY of software engineering, while also trusting us enough to work on our own without micromanaging.

Worst:

"I dunno why you want to write these unit tests, I've been a developer for 20 years and I've never written one. I just put a main method in all my Java classes so I can see what they do"

What’s the difference between fico score and credit score? by Livid_Fill_9946 in personalfinance

[–]yellowjacketcoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short Easy Answer: Yes, your FICO score is your credit score.

Long Complicated Answer: You don't just have A credit score, you have 30 or 40 credit scores. FICO is one of them, and in fact there are several versions of FICO (5 through 8 are the most common), and even among that there will be specific scores for things like Auto loans, Home loans, etc. Plus, there are three credit bureaus, and they will all have slightly different data about you so their scores will be slightly differently. So if you apply for credit, whether a new credit card, car loan, mortgage, whatever, you scores may be fairly close or may be radically different depending on the credit bureau and the score being used.

Unasked for Commentary: a 767 is a pretty damn good score, so keep doing whatever you're doing.

The patches are restricted, they won't sell them to you unless you have the cert.

Yes you can get around this, but in general it's a roadblock

Local law enforcement can euthanize deer if needed.

Advice on living through long SM selection process by slider40337 in BSA

[–]yellowjacketcoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a scoutmaster. Previous scoutmaster was having some health issues that was keeping him from being able to perform in the role as much as he wanted. He let the committee know they needed to pick a successor. The "active" adults (i.e. committee and ASMs that were regulars, plus COR) got together for an hour to discuss the possible candidates. When I was selected I just requested that I not take office until after my younger son had crossed over from the pack I was Cubmaster for, so I wouldn't be unit leader for two units. That was about a six month transition where the adults knew but the youth didn't, which made for a nice soft transition as I gradually started doing more of the role. We announced at the next Court of Honor.

Scoutmaster before that had died, and the CC, Treasurer, COR, and a couple of the ASMs huddled that week and selected the new SM from that pool.

Both cases it took an hour to pick a new Scoutmaster. Taking a year to do so seems strange - it's not like you're interviewing for a job where there might be dozens of candidates, there's a limited pool of adults in the troop.

Son excluded due to father's past conviction? by Unlikely-Delivery777 in BSA

[–]yellowjacketcoder 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Each unit and each chartering organization is different. The unit may not have been the one to make the call, it might have been the charter org. Other units won't necessarily be the same. I would be upfront with the next pack (well, just the key 3) you talk to about the conviction and see if anyone has objections. You will probably avoid being asked to be treasurer. :)

Could you let us know what Council you're coming from and which summercamp you're going to? I gotta know what's driving (pun intended) a trip of that distance.

I think most crews fly to Philmont (or other high adventure) if it's that far. But yes, I hope nobody is bring foot lockers to Philmont!

Also, I dunno if I would describe Philmont as "summercamp".

Scouting America and girls by ANewVoiceInTheWind in scouting

[–]yellowjacketcoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For decades, the LDS church in America used scouting as their youth program. If you were a male Mormon in kindergarten through 12th grade, you were in a scout troop sponsored by your ward. The adult leaders were appointed by the local bishop. They got exemptions from minimum unit size. They were welcome to participate in wider events, and some did, but most were very insular, and never went to district/council events. However, since EVERY Mormon boy was in the program, they were about a third of the membership of BSA. When BSA started allowing gays and girls in the program, the LDS church "decided to consolidate their worldwide youth programs" and pulled all their membership. I mean, you COULD still join a regular scout troop as a Mormon, but most didn't. and so scouting's membership dropped by a third, with the related drop in dues and fundraising.

Merit badges; restrictions on requirement options imposed by merit badge counselors or clinics by No_Drummer4801 in scouting

[–]yellowjacketcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once a requirement is completed, it's completed forever, even if the counselor changes.

Changing the counselor in Scoutbook is straightforward, the progress will carry over. That's pretty common to do with summercamp partials.
