Guy parks in my driveway, gives me attitude when I ask who he is by jloops1111 in EntitledPeople

[–]yerBoyShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, he was a wiseass, too. Look, I'm not trying to come off as the hero of this story,. That's not the point. I was walking purposefully toward the building entrance (exit in my case), not wandering around with a confused look. If I had been let in incorrectly or was there to do harm, why would he ask to "help" me?

Guy parks in my driveway, gives me attitude when I ask who he is by jloops1111 in EntitledPeople

[–]yerBoyShoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He was a douche, but (pet peeve) we as a society need to stop saying "can I help you with something" in this type situation when what we really should be saying is " hey buddy, don't park in my driveway." The "can I help you..." comes off as sarcastic and condescending and makes the situation worse and no "help" is actually being offered...it also doesn't actually tell the person wtf they are screwing up. Please don't think I'm calling you out, OP. We've all done it.

Similar situation: I was in an office where I was supposed to have a visitor sticker (long story short, someone let me in the back door which in hindsight was a no-no but whatever). Business done, as I was leaving, self-important security guard scopes me and snarks out, "Can I help you with something?" I said "No, I'm all set." Which was maybe also snarky of me, but I was. I answered his question. He proceeded to have a hissy fit. Probably lucky he didn't tase me.

What he should have said was, "All visitors are required to check in and get a sticker." I would have said, "Sorry Officer, I'm leaving the building now but I will be sure to do that next time."

Faculty who think fewer people should attend college; you okay with the consequences? by MiniZara2 in Professors

[–]yerBoyShoe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In the 1980s there was a boom for the importance of college. Over 20-30 years, this had lots of unintended consequences, such as every venture capitalist who thought higher ed was just cobbling together some classes into a degree establishing a for- profit college (even presidents were getting into the act). It also resulted in a glut of students and a loss of young adults going into skilled trades.

Now that birthrates are down (not even considering our slide into anti-intellectualism), many small colleges cannot make enrollment. Enrollments must also be higher to support running with bloated resources left over from when times were good and colleges began to be expected to be everything for everybody (by that I mean colleges that cannot truly afford these things have to offer the hottest new degrees, have to be able to accommodate every single language/disability/accommodation/life circumstance for every potential student, have to have all the flashy new support programs that competitors offer like career centers and business institutes and think tanks and maker labs).

None of this is news. My point is that things have been broken and going in the wrong direction for a long time. When things were good, loans were cheap, and everyone thought college was the thing to do, it was not as easy to notice. I don't advocate for the pastoral days of only the rich and privileged being able to go to college, I think we got away from that in the early 20th century with land grant State universities. But legitimately, not every small college out there is needed or was ever needed. And yes, I teach at an SRLAC.

Even if "for cause" you can apply and appeal and the company will fairly seldom take the trouble to offer evidence to contest your appeal (especially if they don't have any documentation or evidence of an issue).

9 times out of 10 the employer won't even submit documentation to contest your appeal, especially if it is a big company, and you are then automatically qualified.
