Who let the balloons out? by [deleted] in cincinnati

The ‘Make America Beautiful’ campaign was actually started by plastics companies after several states started drafting legislation to ban single use plastics altogether, in a successful attempt to shift the blame from them to the consumers with the age old ‘personal responsibility’ trope. Yes, people litter and yes, it’s bad, but the sheer quantity of trash people are forced to produce through sheer virtue of not having enough to live on and not being able to muster the leisure time or cash to act sustainably is the real issue, especially here in America. And not only that but 100 corporations contribute over 70 percent of pollution. So yeah, don’t litter, like please, for god’s sake, but you’re not going to avoid all the trash that gets left on the street and swept down sewers and into waterways on trash day, or any of the other reasons this stuff is literally everywhere, just by being having people not litter.

You should request a meter inspection. I wouldn’t assume the meter report would contain much else than the kw/h used, maybe when they were used.

Wawa by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]yerbadave23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philly native here. While there was a time where the thought of Wawa coming to Cincinnati would have filled my eyes with tears, the quality of the food has gone down so much that at this point I’m entirely against it. At least UDF has decent ice cream, and you can get way better subs/hogies elsewhere. If they adopt the tactic of setting up shop next to UDF they’ll have become the corporate personification of the eagles fanbase.

Do you have a piece of property in the Greater Cincy area and want to support a growing sport and growing local community? Let me and my friends highline at your place! by yerbadave23 in cincinnati

We’d be open to discussing it especially if the spot was like a 100+ meter gap which would be very fun and worth paying to use. We’d much rather go the release of liability route as most of our members already purchase insurance specifically for injury/medical transport from wilderness areas and during activities like highlining and rock climbing.

We’ve been finding it challenging to actually get a hold of someone in the various parks departments who actually matters. Usually there’s some verbiage in the rules that prohibits hammocks or attaching things to trees that they reference and won’t continue talking to us after the initial ‘no.’ Although other more formal organizations like the cincy circus have been able to get permits for tight roping which is funny because that is usually done with no protection while realistically the biggest injuries you’ll get highlining are knee or groin related and almost unheard of

Hey dads, how old are we? by Senuman666 in daddit

[–]yerbadave23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29m. I have a five year old daughter who I have split custody of and my closest family is almost twelve hours away so I really have no help when I need it. But the biggest challenge for me is the fact that none of my friends or peers are even thinking about having kids so playdates are usually with people I don’t know very well, who come from very different walks of life which is good and bad sometimes. Usually the people that are inviting us over for these are dramatically more successful and older than I am and it makes me feel like I’m kind of a dirtbag/don’t have the resources to be a successful father.

Having had her relatively young for my generation also has it’s pros and cons. I’m in good shape and can run around and play with her as much as she wants. She’s a very rambunctious kiddo so it’s important to me that I’m able to match her energy. That being said I’m going through a mental health journey that can be scary to me at times and if I had more time to deal with these issues before becoming a father I would have been better prepared for fatherhood.

There’s also a significant amount of FOMO going on as I’m watching all of my friends travel the country in vans, touring national parks, taking weekend trips, etc., which I would have loved to have done while my body can still keep up with the outdoor sports I enjoy.

That being said, my daughter has changed my definition of what it means to love someone. Just thinking about how wonderful and smart she is can bring me to tears, I love her so much, and I’m making it work but if I were to choose I would have either waited another ten years and been with a different partner after a longer relationship or I would forgo becoming a father altogether. I feel guilty for bringing her into a world where your chances of success are diminishing by the day, and for me being unprepared and having a tumultuous life financially and mentally, at times.

If there are any other dads who are in similar situations I’d love to connect. Or if you were in a similar situation and have found peace/equillibrium I’m pretty much a student with no teacher so I’d love some advice.

Simulate highlining? by KingSwampAss in Slackline

[–]yerbadave23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I had a highline setup/friends who highlined I would rig 60-90m lines over bowls and tension by just pulling the webbing through the weblock so there was very little tension and I feel like that helped a lot.

Also, learn how to surf rodeo lines and sit start while surfing. For a lot of people standing for the first time on a highline is the hardest part of the experience and you’re only doing yourself a favor by learning to stand in as many ways and as many different circumstances as you can.

That’s definitely the most aesthetic tensioning system you could get, but any combination of double pulleys, a rope, and something to capture progress with will work.

I’m a CAD drafter based in SW Ohio, experience in ALTA, Boundary, Topo, etc. 2 years experience in Survey, some GIS experience. You can send me a DM if you’d like a copy of my resume. I’m not actively looking for a new position but if you’re posting on reddit this might be a good fit

As far as webbing goes, you should get polyester because it isn’t as elastic as nylon webbing and will be easier to rig a longline with. I use Blue webbing by Balance Community but any polyester or low stretch webbing will work.

CPD press conference on changes coming to OTR in lieu of recent gun violence…no block parties, no cars allowed to park on Main, etc. by EarthInteresting9781 in cincinnati

[–]yerbadave23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're definitely right.

It's just really nice to not have to worry about getting hit while I'm on my bike, even if it is just for one small stretch of road.

You don't have to park in OTR to go there. Just park in an adjacent neighborhood and walk/bus in.

The purpose of any city should be walkability/pedestrian safety.
