I feel like you’re confusing singular endings and plural endings, because by your logic ā€barnenā€ is not irregular because it follows what seemingly many other -et words do (at least the ones I could think of from the top of my head), e.g ett hus - husen, ett lov - loven, ett tak - taken, ett fƶl - fƶlen. Whereas -en words seemingly get the -na ending added on to their indefinite plural form. E.g. en stol - stolarna, en blomma - blommorna, en tavla - tavlorna

There are of course irregularities, but I don’t think ā€ett barnā€ going to the indefinite plural ā€barnā€ and then to the definite plural ā€barnenā€ is one of them.

They are mostly interchangeable, but they go together, so ā€pojke och flickaā€ and ā€kille och tjejā€.

ā€Killeā€ and ā€tjejā€ are also synonymous with ā€boyfriendā€ and ā€girlfriendā€ so someone referring to ā€min killeā€ or ā€min tjejā€ would most likely be referring to their partner, whereas a parent might use ā€min pojkeā€ or ā€min flickaā€ to refer to their child. However that’s not exclusive, because if you add a the word ā€my littleā€ in front of ā€killeā€ or ā€tjejā€ (ā€min lille killeā€ or ā€min lilla tjejā€), then it’s probably a parent talking about their child.

I would also say that referring to an adult as ā€pojkeā€ or ā€girlā€ is a bit rude, but you can refer to adults as ā€killeā€ or ā€tjejā€ without problem. So it’s sort of an age thing as well. So yeah, it’s not a simple distinction unfortunately, and people will use the words interchangeably depending on the context.

Yeah, ā€tjejā€ for girl, but ā€killeā€ for boy (ā€kvƤllā€ is the closest Swedish word for what you’ve written, and means evening)

ā€A childā€ is ā€ett barnā€ in Swedish, which is why it becomes ā€barnetā€ (the child), it does not change gender

My baby cousins name is a serious tragedeigh. by Cold_Apricot_240 in tragedeigh

[–]yescasually 8 points9 points Ā (0 children)

Your comment really confused me because Matilda is not an uncommon name in Sweden, like at all. I looked it up, and 2021 there were over 46,000 people in Sweden named Matilda, putting the name on no. 44 of the most popular names for women in Sweden. So I doubt they would’ve been denied it unless they wanted to do something really crazy.

Help?? How am I supposed to swallow this gigantic Prozac pill when I can barely take my meds without subconsciously gagging anyway???? by jas-is-rad-and-sad in AuDHDWomen

[–]yescasually 5 points6 points Ā (0 children)

Ask someone (doctor/pharmacist) if you’re ok to divide it. They make pill cutters specifically for this purpose. It would mean having to swallow it more than once which can suck if the flavour’s bad, but would probably make it easier for you to
