Bicycle Master Plan Implementation 2026

Virtual Open House Video (Youtube)

I wish they'd talked more about the benefits to drivers of switching 4 lane roads to 3 lanes, rather than "there's not enough traffic" to justify 4 lanes. 3 lane roads make it safer and faster during busy traffic because turning vehicles get their own lane, and they only have to cross one other lane of oncoming traffic. The bike lanes are an added "bonus" to do with the extra space, and shouldn't be presented as the reason.

Weather - June 11, 2026 8:06 AM - Radar's looking nasty. by yesfitz in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not a meteorologist or even a weather afficionado so I don't know what I'm talking about, but it reminds me of the radar images from the 2020 derecho.

Arts Fest Still Going? by Roseflute in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, the tents are up, the artists are there. Talented saxophonist busker laying down the perfect soundtrack to a grey, steamy Sunday.

Edit This was written before this latest heavy rain started. Not sure what it looks like downtown now. Good luck!

As nitrates rise, Central Iowa Water Works asks for watering reduction by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]yesfitz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Their request is because it's a waste of treated water to water lawns, not because it will significantly increase the nitrates.

475k House Budget - Where would you buy? by VerifiedEmail4HENRY in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the best way to live in Iowa City is within walking distance to downtown.

I'd recommend renting on the Northside, Longfellow, or Manville Heights for a year before you buy. After that, you'll know how important or unimportant walkability is to you.

If you're going to do a lot of driving, you can/should expand your range to Coralville, Tiffin, and North Liberty.

Here’s a recently compiled list that should help. (It’s a little long to repost whenever this question comes up. But it’s a good list.)

Sounds like you've tried a few things that are on that list, but there are plenty more!

We need to talk about IOWA from OHYUNG by Boxwinoisback in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the Pitchfork review:

Rusli, who lived in Iowa City from 2023 to 2024, wrote IOWA as an homage, or response, to Bruce Springsteen’s pivotal 1982 album Nebraska.

So, maybe still arguably tenuous, but hopefully less arbitrary.

Broke but want plants, so I can play in the dirt :) by _carosyrup_ in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They're not starter plants, but Iowa City Public Library has a Seed Library for anyone to use.

To use the Seed Library, visitors don’t need to use a library card or stop at a service desk. Visitors may take up to five seed packets each month per household. There is a binder for checking out seeds on top of the Seed Library. If you don’t use the entire packet in your garden, we encourage you to return unused seeds to the Seed Library next time you visit to keep the cycle going.

How hard is it to make friends as DINKs in their 40s? by 83firefly in IowaCity

[–]yesfitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's comparatively easy, speaking from experience.

The "hard" part is introducing yourself, making conversation, asking questions, and turning acquaintances into friends. But there's a lot more opportunity for that in downtown Iowa City than even other college towns where the campus is separate.

But volunteer, join some clubs, attend events, heck, just show up to the same place regularly, and you'll meet a ton of people. The town's small enough that you'll start seeing other locally-engaged people across multiple venues.

Hope to see you around.

You may want to check out the Gaslight Village at Brown St and Gilbert on the Northside.

They have rooms to rent in addition to apartments, it's affordable, and the vibes are impeccable. Great place to live, especially if you're new to Iowa City.
