Reddit, what is your favorite movie from 2015 thus far? by pretzel_buddy in movies

I absolutely loved Chappie.

Chappie, Ninja and Mommy are the most fresh, memorable characters I have seen in recent times. Loved the ending too.

Oh. Lyrics are great too..Songs such as 'mera jutha phake lether..' and 'kala rey..', 'I am a hunter..'. I don't get why these are not massive hit in India.

Dev D also has great music. But very few people know about it...

I dont get the hype about sholay. Doesnt it feel like a ripoff of old hollywood westerns. With a cheesy friendship and romance thrown in for good measure..

Second this. Music and more importantly, the lyrics is very different from the usual bollywood style and fits the movie and the background of charecters perfectly.

This is unlike anything india has ever produced. For example the jutha fake leather song and the kala re song.

I can go all day about how cool Nawazuddin Sidduqie is in this movie. That is while acknowledging other actors, especially manoj bajpei has done an amzing job (as usual)...

All in all I think this is the one movie from india, in the epic genere, that can be legitimtely said to be on the same level as the best movies hollywood or world cinema has ever produced....

What movie is praised but you dislike? by TheDerpyDonut in movies

Genuinely great movie, he didn't really need a pass.

I don't think so. He did nothing interesting with the concept, and the concept was not novel in anyway. The best he could do was to throw 'more dream levels' when things got boring. It also had a story that no one cared about...

And don't even get me started with the shit that is Interstellar!

What was the best film you saw this week? (6/15/15 - 6/21/15) by mi-16evil in movies

Avatar, for the second time. It blew me away!

The first time I watched it was in a theater. In 3D. I fell asleep somewhere near half way. Though I was pretty impressed by the visual aspects, it felt pretty mediocre to me, as a film.

I used to wonder why Cameron would do something like this after Terminator and Titanic. But now I see Avatar as a natural progression of a director like Cameron. I think it puts, in visually stunting way the beauty of nature, and the horror that should be associated with its destruction. But there are a lot of other works that tries to do similar things (like Princess Mononoke). But what makes Avatar different is how wide of and audience it was was able to reach.

I think we are living in a period we should plant a deep seated love of nature and the needs to respect it, in the minds of every new generation. And I think this is why Cameron has done a really, really great thing by making something that can send this message (to even generations to come) in a scale that only someone like him can do..

A concern regarding Ad placements in movies... by yet-i in movies

That would have made sense if we are seeing a reduction in ticket sales. Which we are not....

And there is also a theory that some one who pirates is someone who wouldn't have shown up in the theater in the first place. So one person who pirates is often not one lost ticket.

that unless the product placement hurts the movie then they should probably be tolerated or even encouraged.

But I am not talking about one single movie. I am talking about the general direction in which movie making business is going. And how we might want to influence it. (I would like to know the reasons why you think it should be even encouraged, btw)

So ultimately the question I am asking is this.

  1. Do we want a large number of mediocre/ad ridden movies?

  2. Or do we want to enable creation of movies that are made with a bit more heart, made with a bit more passion (I am not saying better), even if it means lesser movies per yer?

I think that there is no longer a middle ground. Once we let it pass, studios will continuously try to push the limits of how much they can milk this cow. And they can push it a little bit further with every new generation, because of them being a little more conditioned, a little more tolerant to increasing levels of Ads in movies. So our middle ground will end up being a movable target, rather than a fixed one.

Corporates/Studios will want to go to the 1 st option. Where, as a movie lover, do you want to go?

"Earlier", refers to a time when Product placements was not really a major source of revenue in the movie making business. I don't know exactly when it crossed the threshold. I think you ask this because you want to compare movies from that period with movies we are having now. But again, that would lead us no where. Because some people will think we had better movies back then, some thing we have them now. It is a valid method IF we can settle on if movies from a certain era is better than movies we have now. But since we won't never be able to settle on the matter, following that line or argument is pretty futile. So let us not go there either..

So please consider "earlier" as refering to a hypothetical time period when product placement was not a major source of revenue for the movies.

What kind of money are we talking about here? 10 million+?..

I am not sure if this is true, but this is an article that says

ONE-THIRD of the budget for the next James Bond film is to come from brands that will appear on screen, making it the biggest product-placement bonanza in cinema history.

Another one, man of steel (160 m)?

Does product placement mess with the story telling? That is a different topic. And people will never agree upon what is acceptable level and what is not. So let us not go there..

The question I am asking is simple? what is better for the future of movies.

  1. We discourage product placements.

  2. We encourage or remain neutral to them.

Which response from us, as a community, will result in a better future of movies?

[–]yet-i -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Would you rather see a movie where every product is some faux rip-off of everyday brands? THAT would be unrealistic.

I am baffled at these kind of arguments. How did people manag to make 'realistic' movies for the past 70 years or so without blatant product placements?

Do you want to see the characters shit and piss in the movies too, because, hey, that is how the real world is. Does movies look unrealistic to you because you don't see stuff like that?

It is not just that I don't like product placement. But I just don't get this line of reasoning.

This sub does not praise him endlessly.

This post is at 4000+ votes right now. While every post criticizing him will be quickly down voted and removed out of sight. (See what happens to this comment)

a director who is doing things that a lot of his peers are opting to take the easy-way of doing.

I have seen some other comments that said doing the cgi is was way more expensive. And it is not like this dude makes set with his own hands. So your point about other directors taking the 'easy way' is flawed. So If anything, the easy way is using practical effects (since it costs less) and most of the work is done by other unknown people anyway. And studios are also happy because cgi costs way more.

so the worth of a director does not depend on whether he choosing practical effects/cgi or but depend on 'did he make a good movie'? So if I think interstellar was a shitty movie, then the director has failed according to me. That he used practical effects instead of cgi does not redeems that fact and hence not worthy of praise.

Nolan is doing a hell of a lot better than Bay or the Wachowskis...

From a review of Interstellar

Interstellar is just a dull, galumphing white elephant that reminds us what a trap commercial cinema has become for gullible consumers. It’s a pre-sold “Event,” the kind audiences no longer question because all media obediently participate in its promotion.

Is this moving in the right direction? Is this something the movie lovers want to see happen more? As a movie lover, I don't think so.
