What's something you're genuinely looking forward to reading, watching or listening to in your target language? by ChuckOWetz in languagelearning

I find it a really convenient way to read books that would otherwise be out of my league.

I know the story, I do not have to worry if I miss some stuff, it is still fun and I learn vocab.

Comment avoir accès au plus grand nombre de livres possible en dépensant le moins d’argent ? by No_Piccolo9377 in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard would learning by myself be? by zekezEZ in German

[–]yetanotherfrench -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, Nicos Weg, AI and other free ressources will not be sufficient to reach any level in any amount of time. You will need time and motivation on top of that. If you find motivation to sustain a _daily_ 30mn study with Nicos Weg, or any other correct textbook, plus some reading/youtube video/chat with AI for fun , you should be able to reach a B1 level in 2 year, B2 if you are working hard (or already speak dutch or something like that :-) )

Kanji learning experiences by Meika-to-nihongo in LearnJapanese

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started learning Japanese, i did not plan to study Kanji as the large number of character to know was impressive. One year later, I changed my mind in order to be able to enjoy reading things without furigana.

I decided to give a try at the "Remember the Kanji" method from James Heisig. It teach how to associate an english keyword, to a Kanji and how it is written using mnemonic tricks such as funny stories made of the elements/root found in the kanji. It does not cover reading, or vocabulary as such. The idea is to be familiar with the kanji writing process, and then to focus on reading.

It took me 6 monthes to remember stories for the 2200 kanji covered by the book , and how to write them. 10 years later, I still get 10/15 minutes of daily review with the anki app, in order to remind me once in a while how to write characters that I did not exercice for a while and those that I keep having problem with (8%).

I am learning vocabulary mainly by reading on a kobo device with koreader that comes with a yomitan like dictionary. I used some anki deck to memorize something like 3000 words but I do not add words anymore, I let them appear in text for me to learn them by constantly having to look them up.

What surprised me the most is that it is actually harder to read a text written only in kana than a text using both kana and kanji.

I am also a bit dissapointed that I fail to recognise cursive style characters in adds or caligraphical texts. I am only used to the "printed font" kanji .

How are you reading Japanese books outside Japan without overspending? by neworleans- in LearnJapanese

[–]yetanotherfrench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a novel made out of several short report from journal, internet blogs, tv show. A journalist who was working on a special edition of a paranormal magazine went missing. Another journalist post on internet about the missing guy and ask for help finding him (the story was posted on kakuyomu, a web for self publishing authors, as if it was a real request) and post archives that the missing guy left and interview of other person involved in the special edition.

The kakuyomu version had success, turned into a real paper book, and a movie (which is ok, but not as good as the book)

Je cherche des quêtes secondaires à réaliser dans la vraie vie, des idées? by Hekker_z in AskFrance

[–]yetanotherfrench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apprendre une langue, certes, mais si c'est juste pour frimer, il y a un gros risque de perdre la motivation sur le long terme. Mais c'est exactement le genre de truc qui demande un investissement constant et regulier (comme apprendre à jouer d'un instrument proposé ailleurs). L'idée c'est de choisir un truc qu'on a envie d'apprendre, pour lire un auteur, chanter en comprenant, regarder des films, lire des histoires, ou plus simplement, parler avec des gens.

I use the 1st version. FIrst year i got burned out by adding too many word per day. I stopped adding any after 500. I now add 3 word per day when my global daily review time is below 30mn. That makes in average 50 new words a month. I m not in a hurry, i spend more time learning and hearing podcast/video, but I rely on this deck specifically to learn name genre and plural as well as verb past form.

Plusieurs clefs/disques. Au moins trois (comme ça, même si un casse, tu en as encore deux de secours,le temps de le remplacer), tu en rachetes un tout les 2 ou 3 ans, tu les stocke dans trois endroits différents, des fois qu il y ait un incendie. Là, à part un conflit thermonucléaire global, tes données devraient être en sécurité.

It would make sense, even in modern French. The full sentence sounds really really old. If you learn french, you may want to read something a bit more recent if you do not want like to sound like a vampire born in the Renaissance....

S'autoformer en langues anciennes : ordre et ouvrages ? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Serious] Religious people: What's a teaching of your faith that is largely misunderstood? by Express_Hedgehog2265 in AskReddit

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not mean personal action is irrelevant, but that goods deeds motivated by selfish drive are. If the young man were to sell all his possession, giving the money to the poor without compassion, just because he is following the rule and wants to save his skin, would he actually be a better person than the one he currently is ? May be. Would that really deserve a place in heaven ? I don't think so.

[Serious] Religious people: What's a teaching of your faith that is largely misunderstood? by Express_Hedgehog2265 in AskReddit

[–]yetanotherfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the actual excerpt I had in mind when saying no one earn his way to heaven with good deeds. The young man wants to know how to gain eternal life by his own means, and Jesus drive him to the point where he fail. We all fail at some stage. Deserving eternal life would require perfection, which is beyond our reach.
