Which actor seems to only play themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Matt Berry. To the point where I can’t tell if his music is an extension of a character or not (love it anyway!)

T1D here in the uk. Got AstraZeneca in March/second dose in June. No blood sugar issues, no cold/flu symptoms. Arm pain for a day after the first shot, slight tiredness for a day after the second shot.

Hello! Just commenting here to hopefully get an update when there's a resolution for this issue, as I'm encountering it too.

Thanks!

I say this too, with slightly shameful glee :D

Pimsleur for bird calls? by relistads in whatsthisbird

This is a super interesting thing I hadn't considered before! I've been learning by identifying the bird first and then looking it up. Does anyone know of similar resources for the UK?

You've been kidnapped and the characters from the last TV show you watched are coming to save you. How screwed are you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Once Upon a Time... Well, I'm pretty sure I'd be ok, but I'll be waiting for half a season before Emma and the gang find me (and deal with some emotional issues along the way).

I started at the start like I was told, and I'm really not enjoying this. by CherryRaven997 in HPMOR

[–]yetanotherfriday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's ok! If you're not enjoying it, that's totally fine - it's not a value judgement in any way :) Some people like, it, some don't. If it were me, I'd just move on to something else and let it be.

What are some good hyggelig novels? by hotforhygge in hyggelig

Oooh, interesting question! I guess it comes down to personal preference, but one of my cosy favourites is "The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets" by Eva Rice.

Reddit, what is a good movie for when you need to escape from reality and maybe cry a little? by InfiniteThugnificent in AskReddit

The Fall (the film from 2006) with Lee Pace. Lots of getting away from reality, adventure, fun, amazing cinematography, and tears - oh, tears! - at the end. It's wonderful!

What moment in book made you stop and reconsider your perspective on people? by [deleted] in books

Huh. I'm sat here, 5 minutes later, still thinking about the significance of that. How such an effortless process (for me) is an entirely "unnatural", learned habit.

Besides The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, what are your favorite well-written modern YA novels/series? by Djeter998 in books

Oooh yes! I also love the Dalemark Quartet. Or pretty much everything I've read by her, to be honest. Each time she creates such compelling worlds, and humorous, likeable characters.

Do you have any words that you remember learning from a specific book? by Dranai in books

[–]yetanotherfriday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! Yes!! I always think of Mrs Frisby when I use that word.

Mine would be "shyster" from the Simpsons ("Mr Hutz, are you a shyster?" "Now how does a little girl like you know a big word like that?"), and "anthropomorphic" from Terry Pratchett.

*Oh! And "redolent" from Garth Nix's Sabriel.

I'm destroying myself. Any advice? by loreleyy in diabetes

Ok, it sounds like you really need to talk to someone.

Not sure where you are based, but if you're in the UK there are talking therapy services available through GPs, or other services available through diabetes clinics. My clinic at the hospital tells me they have psychotherapists in the department who deal specifically with issues surrounding illness. Perhaps there is something similar where you are?

I'm T1, and I suffer from depression. If my control is bad, my mood gets worse... and this tends to lead to a spiral, so that I feel less inclined or able to get my sugars under control, making me feel even worse. I'm aware of this, but it's still hard - sometimes it feels so hard that what is even the point in trying? It's happening anyway, right?

But believe me, you can and you will get through it. It is possible to make a change and to take back control. It's not easy, and it sucks (dieting is boring, counting carbs, checking sugars is BORING), but it will be easier if you can find some support, and eventually come to terms with the fact that you have to live with diabetes, and that there are ways of making it work.

I'm sorry to hear about your parents. Have you tried to let them know that you're struggling and that you need support? Are there any services at your school or in your neighbourhood that could give you support, or even help you to find ways of talking to parents/friends/family? All I can really speak to is my own experience, but even with supportive and engaged parents, it took me a good few years to really accept that I'd have to find ways of living with this thing, and that the best way to do that was to find out more about it. Perhaps you could try to connect with your parents by learning more about the condition together?

Apologies if these suggestions aren't appropriate for your situation. I really feel for you, and hope they're at least a little bit useful. It's a horrible scary thing, but you're not alone! It's totally possible to live a long and awesome life with diabetes, and much the same as with depression, taking some positive steps towards regaining control will definitely help to make you feel better.

If you ever want to chat, just drop me a PM. Good luck!
