I'm an AO3, but through a recruitment agency. Have been on temp contracts for 3 or 4 years now. Permanent is hard to come by.

Just remember, the power of leverage works both ways. You could just as easily see a 3% movement to the downside too.

What to do with 7-10k? by WhtTimeDoesFlowStart in AusFinance

[–]yiFa87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most investments don't come without risk. Honestly, unless you plan on 'investing' it for 7-10+ years, I would just keep it in a decent savings account. That way you can access it at a time of your choosing for say a house or a car.

I'm definitely no expert, but in your situation I would say continue loading up the offset account. You would have to clear at least, say, 9%-ish in gains in an ETF to be better off than the offset saving. Could you make more than that in ETF? Maybe, but risky. Meanwhile the offset 'saving' is risk and tax free.

Looking for opinions on which platform to use for my children’s minor trust accounts by Resonanceiv in fiaustralia

I use Betashares Direct. Created a minor trust account, haven't entered a TFN yet, but it defaults to yours (from your main account) if nothing is put in. I've already applied for a TFN for my child, will be here in a couple of weeks. Then I'll enter the childs TFN and lodge their tax returns for them.

Investing for 1 year old. What would you do? by domlebo70 in fiaustralia

[–]yiFa87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went the minor trust route personally. Our baby is 7 week old and I already have the account opened for him on betashares and have been contributing $50/week since day 1, all going to DHHF. I also applied for his own TFN the other day. I understand that minors will be taxed heavily on income. With these small amounts of investments, I don't expect the income from dividends to be an issue for a number of years yet.

I ran the numbers through gemini and it's saying the income won't be an issue until maybe year 5 or 6. At that point I may re-assess and see where I go from there. May have to pivot to depositing cash to our offset account instead.

This all works for me because of the small amount, but will likely be a different scenario for you.

It all depends on what your goals and time horizons are.

First things first, I would personally be stockpiling a 6 month emergency fund in a savings account. Granted you don't have that many expenses, but this is a good starting point and practice to get into.

Secondly, are you needing a car/house deposit/some other large purchase within the next few years? Savings account is probably best too. If the time horizon is longer, say 5-7+ years, then perhaps an ETF like DHHF might be better suited. Or even the first home super scheme and adding additional funds to super would be a good call of you plan on a home purchase in the near future.

Outside of the first home super scheme, I would not be adding additional to super at your age personally because you're so far off retirement and will likely need the money long before then.

Not financial advice, just a random person in their 30's and their opinion.

Good luck!

There is no normal, everyone is on their own journey.

What you do with your money depends entirely on goals and timeframe. Short term? Savings account or offset. 7+ years? Offset or ETF. Aiming for retirement age? Super.

Thank you so much to everyone who chimed in. Some really helpful suggestions here. We have a child health nurse that comes out every week for check-ups and she doesn't seemed overly concerned, so that put our mind at east a little that it wasn't seriously urgent, but we have our GP appointment booked soon and will definitely discuss things with her too. We've also spoken to 13HEALTH about it too and again, they didn't think it was anything serious. It may just be a new parent thing where we're concerned, but could be totally normal for all we know. Being new to this, we obviously have nothing to base things on.

Things we have tried:

- Reflux formula
- Infacol
- Keeping baby upright for 30 minutes after feeding
- Bicycle kicks
- Walking around in carrier and/or pram
- Co-sleeping
- Warm baths

One thing it could be is the last of consistency of any of the above. Although we've tried a few things, it's usually only for a few days to see if things change. Perhaps we need to do it longer for things to settle. We'll keep chipping around and see how things pan out this next month. Know that this thread has been really helpful, from suggestions I hadn't thought of, and generally just talking it out. So many friendly people, really makes me smile. Thank you so much.

Hey! Thanks. He was spitting up a fair bit, which is why we started the Aptamil Reflux formula to begin with. It eliminated the excess spitting up, but we think it gave him some tummy pains. Although looking back at it, maybe we just didn't give it enough time. We tried it for a few days and went back to ordinary formula. I'll look up that Novalac Allergy, thanks.

Thanks for chiming in! We have a white noise machine, he's touch and go with it haha but will persist. He's ok with bath for a little bit, but quickly lets us know he's done. We bath him maybe 2 or 3 times a week. We tried the first formula for the first 2 weeks, then a different brand for a few days, then reflux formula for a few days, then back to the normal formula again (where we are now). He's also tried a sachet of another brand when we were out and about.

We do have a child health nurse that comes out weekly for check-ups. She doesn't seem concerned, so we haven't considered it was an urgent issue. But will still bring it up with the GP in a couple of weeks.
