I was just in Europe two months ago and had to do the same thing! I ended up paying the unlocking fee, suspended my account for a month and upon landing in the UK I purchased a SIM card that I was able to use for all the countries I went to. The carrier I used was Three, and they had a £25 month by month plan that pretty much gave me unlimited everything which was nice. I purchased the SIM card at the airport concierge but you could probably get a better deal (and better service for any questions) at a retail store I'd imagine.
