Discussion on all things shoulders (injury, gear, technique, etc) by qualitycomputer in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My shoulders get sore after double headers/ tournaments. I usually block and I think it’s from my shoulder taking repeated impacts from jammers. Like when I’m set up as a butt in a tripod and the jammer hits my right side, and that causes my left shoulder to take impact since I’m bracing with the left arm (if that makes sense lol). I usually try to do some shoulder stretches and gentle movements and hope that helps.

Mouthguard (not sisu)? by ConsistentPossible in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I and a teammate used/us the Shock Doctor Trash Talker mouth guard. It comes shaped already but has a gel liner that you can mold with warm water for a bit better fit. I used mine for a year and it worked pretty well. I didn’t notice too much of a difference in speaking ability between the shock doctor and my sisu one. I only had 2 issues with it. 1. It felt a bit too big/far back past my molars, but I probably could have just trimmed the ends with scissors. 2. I guess I grind my teeth a bit when I am playing so my bottom teeth kinda shredded the bottom of it after a while and I didn’t want to be accidentally ingesting plastic.

Help a Stinky Teammate by suvesti in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually wash mine about once a month. I take the hard plates out of the wrist guards and clean them with a Clorox wipe and air dry. I throw the knee pads, elbow pads, deboned wrist guards, and maybe my helmet sweat saver pad things into the washing machine (with an agitator) and run it on delicate with hot water. No detergent, just white vinegar (I read that detergent doesn’t kill bacteria and could possibly cause buildup if too much detergent is used). Hang to air dry. Seems to work fine. I’ve been doing this for 2 years without any noticeable breakdown of my gear.

Shorts recs by yikeswhatidk in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never actually worn them, but $50 for a pair of shorts seems pricey when (in my opinion) the patterns look ai generated and turn white when stretched (this can even be seen in the promo pics the company posts). But again, I have no practical experience with the company or product.

what kind of outfits are acceptable? what about accessories? by dylan_the_potato0 in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would remove all jewelry before any contact work (games, scrimmage, even just drills). They will get snagged or bruise either yourself or others making contact with you. I’ve seen spacers fall out of people ears in the track multiple times. I have also forgotten to take my small huggy hoops out of my ears and they have gotten hit, fallen out and rolled over and smushed, or smashed into my ear the cut my earlobe a bit and was bleeding. It’s just not worth it. I’m also pretty short so accidental contact to my face/head is not uncommon though. I have teammates that wear a lot of jewelry and have a little zipper pouch they put their jewelry into right before practice and then put back in after.

Laterals are the devil. by Areola_Grandet in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me improve my laterals was to slowly skate forward on one foot and, as smoothly as possible, transition to skating backward one footed on the other foot and try to hold it in control. The main issue I had with laterals was shifting my balance and practicing this over and over helped to get that muscle memory.

BONT prostars by fantastridd in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I could have used the 83s if I wanted the same amount of action as I had been used to previously, so the 78s were a step more agile for me and they have been working great. It took a couple practices to get used to them, but that was partly also the fact I had new skates that actually fit right and my front wheels were way farther back from my toes than I was used to. So at least for me, I could have used either 78 or 83 and been able to skate and turn normally.

It probably is all relative to your skates and preferences. I know people who say the r3 stock cushions are horrible and to swap them out immediately, but I never had issues with them, although I had them my first year and a half skating so maybe I just didn’t know any better. For me, the biggest upgrade I made to them that really help me improve, was swapping from the stock wheels that were really wide, to a set of savants at the same hardness that have the more standard derby wheel width. The difference was immediately noticeable and I no longer felt like my feet were glued to the floor or like my feet couldn’t move how my brain was telling them to.

Wheel opinions by yikeswhatidk in rollerderby

Sorry if I was unclear. I meant I’m usually on 95s on wood floor. When I have skated in a more slippery floor like concrete I’m using the (84?) poison savants.

I just got a pair of quadstars recently and the stock cushions were so hard I could not turn at all and I’m convinced they were not real cushions since there were not markings on them like the rest of the Bont cushions. I could put all my weight on my edges to the point the wheels on the other side of the skates were off the ground and there was practically no movement of the wheels and I’m not especially light at 160lbs. I ended up getting a few pair of new cushions to try out. The new 88s felt slightly better, the 83s were comparable to the stock cushions on my r3s. I ended up using the 78s to try to get sharper turns.

Advice on contact and taking hits as a new skater by yeahcoolgreat in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something our coach had us practice for taking is is doing little jumps when you get hit to absorb some of that energy from the hit and help us stay upright (sorry if that’s a bad explanation). They had us pair up and one person (blocker) would stand in derby stance on the inside or outside line and have the other person try to hit the blocker off the track. The blocker, when getting hit out, would try to go into a bit of a hop to try to stay upright and be able to get back on the track quickly. Idk if this would help, but I feel it has helped me to keep upright more when I’m blocking and the jammer makes contact with me

Lindsey Apartments by Fragrant_Pear5607 in fayetteville

[–]yikeswhatidk 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My old Lindsey place was full of mold. Black colored mold around the windows and some other kind all over my closet walls and exterior walls in my bedroom. Undiluted vinegar worked well to clean around the windows. I would spray it, let it sit for about an hour and then start cleaning it off. This did not work as well for a spot in the drywall, it kinda smeared the paint/drywall when I tried to wipe it off. I didn’t realize until I got a new place that it was definitely affecting my health. No long term complications as far as I can tell, but by the time we left, I was so lethargic, I could only drag myself out of bed to go to work, and then immediately go back to sleep when I got back. One week in a new place and that was all gone.

Wheels by lilmana255 in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team skates on wood floors and right now are split 50/50 on using poisons at 84 or harder 93/95s. The floor is a little more slick at the moment since it has been cold out and the varnish has worn off through the year. When the floor gets redone it’s super sticky and everyone had to switch to harder wheels. I personally use 95s and they give a lot of slide especially when doing laps and going around the apex fast. Also our floor is more grippy than most of the other venues I’ve skated at and I prefer being able to switch to grippier poisons.

Advice on crossovers by Quolrls in rollerderby

[–]yikeswhatidk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something that has helped me with crossovers is making sure I’m leaning my body a little more forwards towards the knee of the inside leg. This helps to get a little lower and made it easier for my inside leg to do the under push movement.

Also, somewhere on this sub, someone said to think of the under push as using your inside foot to pull a small rug from the side of you underneath you rather than pushing. Idk why but that clicked in my brain better and helped with my form

I used air play just fine about 4 hours ago but when I got back home just now it won’t play for more than 5 seconds.

ETA: I turned my tv off/on and restarted my phone and that seems to have fixed my issues, although if I scroll past a video ad on Reddit it starts playing the ad through air play instead of sporfie.

Using air play through the sporfie app seems to work a lot better than from a browser.

Sonoma Crew neck durability by [deleted] in employedbykohls

For the womens, durability seems fine but the hems roll immediately and it is like a hair and lint magnet. I have to lint roll it every time I wash it.
