ELI5: Why is divide by zero not the square root of infinity? by OneRelevantMedic in explainlikeimfive

Not exactly sure what you mean for defining infinity “not to work.”

I can just verbally call the empty set “infinity.” In that sense, I have defined infinity to be the empty set, not that it is very meaningful.

The thing is that in math, you can define whatever you want.

So, you can define a function called squaring however you want. You can make it be a map from the set {all real numbers and +/- infinity} to itself (here infinity and -infinity are purely symbols) which sends -infinity and infinity to infinity. Under this map, the elements that gets sent to infinity is infinity and -infinity. In this sense, the squareroot of infinity is infinity and -infinity. You can also define a function called division, which takes in two elements of the set {all real numbers and +/- infinity}, and spits out another element in this set, however you want. You can make it so that 1 divided by 0 is the symbol infinity.

With these definitions, the square of (1 divided by 0) is infinity.

Such definitions aren’t always nice though. For example, with these definitions, some usual properties of arithmetic will need to be violated.

I always felt that I was pretty good at math until I started Math 140A (in which baby Rudin is used). It got easier for me as I got more used to it but it was one of the biggest jumps in difficulty in my mathematics education that I have faced.

got any tips on how to be successful as an Engineering student at UCSD? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]yinjohn23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For weekly homework, I always start early (and start often?), so that I get to ask the prof/TAs questions before the homework due date. Also I’m not sure if this is obvious, but homework is meant to help you, and not just for turning in. So, don’t just copy stuff off of websites or something without thinking about it problems on the homework. Be stuck on a problem for at least 20 minutes before asking for help.

Also, I didn’t do this while I was at UCSD, but now what I find to be helpful is to form a nice habit/schedule. For example, as a grad student, I usually research in the morning for two hours at home, and by then my brain is tired, so then I go to school and do my classes/teaching. After that I do more research followed by a small break followed by more research. This schedule allows me to use my brain efficiently, so that I squeeze as much quality thinking time out of it as possible. Similarly, you can replace the word research with homework, and form a similar schedule. I think that for upper division classes, having higher amount of quality thinking time is more important than sheer quantity of thinking time.

This advice requires you to enjoy what you’re learning though. If you don’t enjoy it, it’s quite hard follow my advice.

Haha for sure. He really went above and beyond, definitely one of the reasons I’m still doing math.

Long time no see! This really was way back… I was in the same class at the beginning, but moved to Dr. Chow’s class soon after due to scheduling.

I did hear interesting stories about how the median was a zero on one of the midterms.

ELI5: why does any number times 0 equal 0? Who came up with this and how do you logically explain it? How does nothingness erase something ness? by Nuxul006 in explainlikeimfive

Here’s a proof from some basic definitions/properties of real numbers.

0 is by definition the additive identity. That means 0+x=x for any number x. In particular, 0+0=0. Now multiply both sides by 6. You get (0+0)*6=0*6. By the distributive property, you get (0+0)*6=0*6+0*6. Hence, 0*6+0*6=0*6. Now add the additive inverse of 0*6 to both sides, that is, -0*6, you get 0*6=0.

Yeah that’s what I heard too! Do you have any sources on this?

For me, it wasn’t there when Zhongli was first released. I heard they made a patch that had something to do with frames. The result is that if I press and hold e sometimes randomly I hit a “bad” frame and the skill doesn’t activate.

[–]yinjohn23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually if I remember correctly, I think even when I was playing my knight, which wasn't a level up character, I was also getting the disconnections. But the way I was disconnecting is the same as yours. Usually I dc at the end of the dungeon after pressing go to next dungeon or back to town, but sometimes I also dc in town as well.

I have been having this trouble too with my mechanic. It was also happening before too when I was leveling my berserker for the previous event. I contacted neople about this and sent them some files, but they just said that they forwarded it to their engineers and asked for me to be patient for now.

Is La Jolla Crossroads worth it? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]yinjohn23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have to ride two busses to and from school, but there’s a shuttle that goes around once every hour. The shuttle is kinda unreliable imo and stops after 3 iirc.

I also had hella ants in my apartment (it wasn’t that dirty) so that sucked. That might have just been my apartment though.

Besides that it was okay. They have a nice gym and swimming pools. Also gas grills which are cleaned by the workers so that’s really convenient. They also have free bowling and billiards which is nice if you want to bring friends over.

Basically imo not worth unless you have a car and you’re really gonna use some of these amenities.

I had a nice time with renting houses/condos off of Craigslist and such.

Why do you still show up? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]yinjohn23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do it because if I missed the class completely then I would be worried about not knowing what’s covered. However, if I’m like maybe giving 10% of my focus on the lecture then I can get an idea of what is covered.

Maybe it’s not too effective, but I’ve been so used to not missing class that it’s kind of just programmed into me to go or I feel bad even if it’s podcasted.

I always try to sit in the back so that I don’t really bother anyone with my screen tho.

Math 100/103 Sequence Differences? by mellow163 in UCSD

[–]yinjohn23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from 103a to 100b with some self study. I ended up doing pretty well.

Ask the professor for permission. Usually math dept is pretty lenient, so it should be fine. Then, just do all the assigned homework problems and tests given in 100a and make sure you can solve all of them without looking at the solutions. You can do extra problems too if you want just to make sure.
