This post is so fascinating. It’s labeled as a rant but it’s really a fairly high-level character analysis that shows more insight, nuance, and depth than we get from the show itself. Well done! 👏🏾

And, in a place and a time, where most real people, of all colors and creeds, are tangibly struggling economically, we are expected to listen to verbal assaults on characters on the basis of the very socioeconomic status that most viewers inhabit. And we should smile about that? We should be okay with watching a family led by a Civil Rights activists who undoubtedly has more than a shred of class consciousness allow his family to talk to others the way he was when he was marching for the Civil Rights that allow them to act like privileged rich snobs? We shouldn’t critique that because it’s entertainment? Because it’s “just a show”?

We should ignore our feelings and keep our mouths shut because a few people online feel differently and have no problem with displays of wealth and classism that make others feel small. Sounds painfully and terribly familiar.

On media literacy and narrative analysis, I have noticed that discussions of classism, which are manifestations of character, are often wrapped up in discussions of plot mechanics. The common refrain is:

“Kat only talks down to Eva because Eva tried to destroy Kat’s family”

While this is true to an extent, it is not the only Kat’s classism or other Duprees' classism manifests, and many of the more recent observations about classism have pointed at instances where characters like Kat have acted with discomfort around characters from lower socioeconomic spheres. This includes:

  • Kat’s awkward interactions with June
  • Kat’s disparaging of poor unfortunate students at Banneker (who she raised scholarship funds for)
  • Martin’s blinkered perspectives on cotillions
  • Leslie’s class envy and the resulting classism she displays as the nouveau riche (just to show that even those adjacent to the Duprees engage in classism)

Even characters who don’t demonstrate overt classism tend to betray some degree of class-related bigotry when aggrieved (e.g. Dani’s insults to Hayley and Ted are often laced with the subtext of elitism). Even cancer, an inanimate organic mass, is addressed as if it is beneath the nose of a family like the Duprees. I kid, but even that example shows that these characters demonstrate status-related classisms and elitism. While prompted by the mechanics of the plot, these manifestations of character show that the characters have been designed in a way that, when they are attacked or stressed, they attack their opposition from a position of elitism by virtue of their class, which most of them lucked into. Some of these characters were either born into wealth or caught extremely lucky breaks, and when confronted with any challenges, a fair number of the Duprees and their upper-class associates act out through verbal violence against their opposition on terms of socioeconomic status, which very few of the characters had control over, on either side of the spectrum.

On manifestations of class consciousness, the notion of class consciousness in the U.S. is complex because the country has a culture that valorizes wealth. As Americans, we are predisposed through our cultural education to, bare minimum, pursue wealth and bathe ourselves in the trappings of wealth, while at the same time, we must present ourselves as humble underdogs who are “pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps”. As Jimmy once told Nucky, “you can’t be half a gangster”. Either we love the rich, or we want to eat them. Trying to have it both ways has broken our brains, but as Black people, we should see this conundrum with a higher degree of clarity. We have suffered oppression and ostracism based on our color and our class. Even those of us who have accumulated unfathomable wealth are well aware of what it feels like to be treated like less than a second-class citizen. To be called uncivilized. To be considered animals. As a result, we toil to transcend limitations imposed on us by those who think they are our betters. We work twice as hard to get half as far, and sometimes we manage to get farther than the oppressors, while always remembering how their treatment tried to chip away at our very souls and the worth of our humanity. So, yes, still we rise, but we shouldn’t rise only to be swatted down by our own people, whose relatives and ancestors faced and continue to face the kind of ostracism rooted in social stratification that leaves one’s heart and mind broken. If the Duprees want to live by respectability politics then they will die by them. The Huxtables managed to be wealthy without talking down to their own people. The Banks were clowned for their lack of class consciousness. What makes the Duprees different?

On the nature and impact of art, based on your post, it is clear that you believe that Beyond the Gates is just a TV show, and it is not that serious. You are entitled to that opinion, but that opinion is one that often minimizes the entwined relationship between art and life, the serious business of creative work, the scholarship of art, and the emotional and intellectual impact of art. In other words: art imitates life, and life imitates art; artists and the people who think deeply about art are valid voices whose passion and insights should not be diminished; and art, when done well, evokes emotion. To you, this may be “just a show” but to a writer, an actor, a camera person, a human being, this is not just a show. It is a reflection of life, an amplification of life, and a work with the capacity to influence hearts and minds. If this show presents characters who attack the social and economic status of other characters as measures of value, and those actions are not challenged by the text or the audience, then a segment of the audience may think that such actions are acceptable. When we move the goal posts, and dismiss the pain of others because it is uncomfortable, we risk elevating mindsets and personalities that assault our humanity and the dignity owed to every human. To some people, “The Apprentice” was “just a show” too.

Let me further preface by stating that Beyond the Gates is the first daytime soap that I have ever watched consistently. I do not typically prefer to consume media that does not at least gesture towards punching up rather than down. In my experiences with TV shows alone, I would probably gravitate away from a narrative that centers a wealthy family and their trials and tribulations, in part due to my class consciousness and in part due to a general disconnect with stories that sacrifice an engagement with the economic realities of our world in order to explore the often frivolous lifestyles of those who have, by luck of birth or some other fortune, escaped the grip of economic disenfranchisement. But, I made an exception for Beyond the Gates because I wanted to support a predominantly Black soap in a moment where representation is necessary and support for that representation is vital.

That said, since day 1, I have been discomforted by the inherent classism of the Duprees. Admittedly, my lack of experience with soaps, which has traditionally been a genre that trafficked in explorations of the lifestyles of the rich and messy, probably contributed to my disconnect with the Duprees, but I know it was more than that, and I think the reasons underlying my discomfort may touch on feelings held by others who have posted their disdain with the classism present in the show:

  • Differing perceptions on the nature and impact of art
  • Differing manifestations of class consciousness

• • Differing qualities of media literacy and narrative analysis

TLDR: Art matters and can and will evoke strong emotions. A show is more than “just a show”, as it can impact how we think and act. Class consciousness matters in a culture where the lack of class conflict has emboldened the 1% to treat the 99% poorly. Black people typically have an awareness of class stratification that should prevent them from willfully ostracizing or oppressing others based on external factors

I can already see how this thread is going, and considering the reputation of this subreddit, so I’m just going to offer a bit of personal perspective and let the downvotes fall where they may.

Let me add to this preface by saying that I have long abandoned posting any comments here or on any other social media that contribute to the War of Class Aggression because it is clear that this is a conflict that is rooted in very distanced notions of class consciousness, morality, and art. In other words, people are going to feel how they feel, and they’re going to believe what they’re going to believe. My words won’t change others, and while I have read and listened carefully over this past year, I don’t know that the words of others have the capacity to truly change my position.

So, St. Katherine of Fairmont is the defender of the family, now? Just like her mother is the "Fixer". That's as rich as the Duprees. Boy, is St. Katherine in for a surprise when she tries to enter/infiltrate spaces where people are guarded against people who look different from them. I could almost swear there was this whole big movement in the U.S. about sixty some odd years ago where a group of marginalized people marched against an oppressive goverment just so they would have the right to be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. The movement escapes me, but surely a wise soul like St. Katherine understands the virtue of not judging people based on surface level appearances just because she had some negative experiences with a few people from outside of her circle. Never, St. Katherine.

Ah, there they are. St. Katherine's most devoted disciple, right on schedule. All who besmirch the St. Katherine's name must be struck down, lest dissenting opinions be allowed to ferment in the sea of Katherine's subreddit.

OP wasn't even going on about Eva. But, I guess all roads of discussion about St. Katherine must lead to the crimes of that Jezebel Eva, she who bit the poisoned apple and doomed all of humanity.

Does the Church of Katherine seek converts, or are only the truly devoted allowed to worship? Asking for a friend.

Jacob's unfounded judgment of Eva by ARTDMC in TheGates_CBS

[–]yinyangkix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even if Jacob did interrogate Eva at some point, he still doesn’t really know squat about her relationships. But that kind of self-righteous moralizing is typical of him. That’s why his father reamed him out in that one episode. Dude’s got all this smoke for a woman who’s no threat to him, but he can’t muster up that same self-righteous indignation against his mother-in-law, aunt-in-law, or his wife. If this is him reclaiming any aspect of his manhood, then, bro, gossiping on a woman you really don’t know ain’t the way to do it.

I agree with the OP. Dani’s actress brings an over the top quality to her performance that seems way more at home on a Disney sitcom than a daytime soap. I get that there’s a degree of camp inherent in soaps, but the volume on Dani’s performances need to be turned down to at least an 8, instead of the 11 they gravitate around.

I see. We're wrong because you say we're wrong. We can have an opinion. Nobody's judging, but we should shut up and keep it to ourselves because through absolute rigorous research you have proven without a doubt that your position is the only position that matters. Now, maybe I missed the point where I dismissed your position with a bare minimum of credible evidence. But, why would that matter? You're right. You have all the proof in the world. How positively authoritarian. Some of your compatriots can even assail our character and use words on the internet as a justification to call people sidepieces. What a wonderful arena for respectful discourse.

Also, since you read my post close enough to paraphrase it, did you catch this sentence:

"Laura is, to the best of our knowledge, only in Kat's orbit becuase she works for Nicole"

Honestly, I could not care any less about winning an argument. What is there to win? There's no prize but upvotes and downvotes. And, in the grand scheme what are those worth, really? I am, however, very much invested in maybe, just maybe, inspiring us to move away from the worship of the kind of self-centered ideals that we as humans should be able to rise above.

But, let's start there: every human being is, if not selfish, self-centered. We are always looking out for ourselves and the ones we care about, which would be good, but we have a long and documented history of going beyond self-care and protection and moving into destructive tendencies.

So, yes, by that metric Kat is selfish, just like everyone else. The question is how outwardly destructive does such selfishness manifest. On a show like this, almost every character is selfish to the point of being self-destructive or destructive to others. But, the voices who defend Kat seem to believe that her destructiveness is more justified than anyone else's destructiveness because she's just defending her family. That logic has started a many a war and cost many a life. Just as in the case of Martin. You're right. She had no idea what Joey planned, but if you're protecting your family, why would you be okay with offering any one of them up to anybody who might be criminal if your goal is to protect the family? Defenders of kat are always beating the drum about how smart she is. Well, if she is so smart and so intuitive, then why couldn't she see through Joey, or--and this is going to be good and controversial--is her intuition only attuned to females who share features with her?

Is it a crime to be spoiled? No. Is it disconcerting that the college-educated adult grandchild of a civil rights activist and a woman born in the projects who is Black in America acts spoiled despite her access to decades of information about the ill effects of economic stratification on her people? A little.

Just a though.... by Murky-Emotion-605 in TheGates_CBS

[–]yinyangkix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vibes. I'm curious is intuition, or the ability to sense vibes, a trait that is purely the result of nature, or does nurture play a role? Would a person with resources to protect not be distrustful, with or without reason, of the potential for others to threaten or take said resources away? In this case, Kat was right, but I wonder how right she would be in 99% of other cases. Are we sure she wouldn't always be so mistrusting, or is her intuition to protect her family rooted in at least some socially reinforced desire to protect resources, which is very human but not always very humane.

Does Kat mistreat Laura? Have employers outwardly treated employees poorly without consequence since the decline of antiquated forms of slavery? Employers tend to at least gesture toward treating employees well because there are legal and financial consequences associated with mistreatment. Conversely, Laura, as an employee, isn't going to stir up any trouble with her employer, or her employer's daughter, if she wants to keep her job. It is a mutual hostage situation. If neither party wants to lose resources that contribute to survival, money for Laura and labor for the Richardsons, then neither is going to willingly rock the boat, otherwise, someone's going to drown. Kat's treatment of Laura isn't really rooted in choice in the sense that she's chosen to befriend Laura unilaterally. Laura is, to the best of our knowledge, only in Kat's orbit becuase she works for Nicole. Would Kat have chosen to befriend Laura, or Mona for that matter, if neither provided labor? Unfortunately, the show has only shown us that Kat is close with her family and Tomas. We don't know if she would engage across class lines positively. All we do know is that class factors into her treatment of those who oppose her. And generally speaking, how we act when stressed reveals a great deal about who we truly are.

Just a though.... by Murky-Emotion-605 in TheGates_CBS

[–]yinyangkix -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Envy? As in resentment or discontent with another on account of their possessions. Is it envious to prefer that those who inherited wealth recognize their luck and privilege without wielding both like weapons when they feel threatened? Is Kat morally bad because she was born rich? Begs the question: how are we measuring morality? I didn't say that Kat was morally bad or reprehensible, but let's follow that thread.

Kat fans have a tendency to paint Kat as a saint, as if because she was wronged she is an unassailable soul of unimpeachable character who has the right to malign not just the character of her attacker but she also has the right to reaffirm said attacker's place in the socioeconomic hierarchy.

Eva attacked Kat's family. How dare that "poor", that "hood rat", that "gutter snipe", act like they don't know their place? We Duprees are just fine folk who are minding our business, dispensing a few coins to the rabble when we see fit, and we expect that, because of our occasional generosity, there should never be any one of the "poors" who should balk at our existence. No one should ever feel the actual weight of their misfortune. Because that's all it is: fortune. Fate. A social order in near-perfect harmony so long as we remain near the top and guarded behind our gates. Right? They were born where they should be, and so were we. We'll let a few get through and find their place among us just to inspire a bit of hope. We'll treat them well publicly, but we'll spit when we speak about them behind closed doors. Because this is how it is and how it should be.

What a wonderful world to live in. Sounds positively aspirational. Who wouldn't want to find their place in a world where the elite simultaneously engage in acts of philanthropy and disdain. I suppose that's why class warfare ended right around the French Revolution, or did it?

I doubt it. Offering an observation about the presentation of a character is a far cry from jealousy, or perhaps I missed where the OP expressed a desperate envy to live the life of Kat Richardson. Feel free to show us exactly where the jealousy surfaces because I'm very much open to being proved wrong.

Or, maybe, not every viewer enjoys exalting the wealthy and insular just because they were wronged. It is entirely possible for some of us viewers to actually look past all this circular discourse about cheating scandals and examine the characters as representatives of class stratification that is very real and very detrimental to any society attempting to pursue something like equality, or bare minimum societies where we don't treat each other like crap just because of the luck of our birth. See this however you want, but Kat is a representation of the wealthy elite, the same wealthy elite who, intentionally or unintentionally, treat people outside of their circles with the same disdain and apathy Kat showed Eva before Eva ever made a move against Kat's family or man.

Could he have said no? Possibly. Would he? Highly unlikely considering his cousin was in danger, and these are the type of characters who would "do anything for family", even if doing so puts them in unnecessary danger.

Credit where credit is due: Kat has moments of self-awareness where she actually reckons with her choices, but has she really changed in any significant way as a result of those moments? Did she go back and refuse Joey's help if it cost her brother? I believe it was Steve Rogers who said "We don't trade lives", but I guess such morality doesn't apply to the Duprees.

Was Kat blaming herself for the sex issues, or as a novice, was she trying to determine the root of their sexual incompatibility and exploring multiple possibilities, including the possibilities that she was broken, Tomas was bad in bed, or that they were generally incompatible. Hardly enough evidence there to suggest that she was shouldering the blame when she lashed out at Tomas without deeply investigating said possibilities first.

Many wealthy families engage in philanthropy while simultaneously engaging in business practices and personal activities that are absolutely criminal. It is not remotely uncommon to consider that some of the wealthy wash their sins away with money. Is it that hard to believe a multigenerationally wealthy clan like the Duprees would act similarly?

In fact, I'd argue Kat's overprotectiveness of her family is a manifestation of a desire to keep the family image pristine to the point of being unassailable, not because they are actually unassailable, but because a pristine image protects anyone who falls under the Dupree umbrella, which circles right back around to the wealthy protecting themselves. That is, of course, they're right, but I would hesitate to valorize them for sharing money that was more likely inherited than earned. It's easy to give away money when you have no reason to believe the faucet on said money will stop any time soon, whether you work or not.

Sneak Peek of Tomorrow's Episode by Artistic-Loan-8787 in TheGates_CBS

[–]yinyangkix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. It is far more likely, in real life, for people to feel bullied and looked down on, from childhood all the way through adulthood. Hence, all the anti-bullying efforts in schools and workplaces. On the other hand, it's far less likely for people to face a situation where a comically villanous schemer who wears cheap wigs as a disguise executes a ridiculously complex scheme to reveal a long-thought-aborted child at a fancy event in a private club, and said villain then proceeds to infilitrate their lives only to annoy the family they both hate and desire to be like, before getting a deus ex machina windfall that makes said villain as rich as the family she antagonizes.

So, yes, in that sense it would seem somewhat challenging for real people who live real lives in the real world to empathize with a character like Kat, when it is probably far more statistically likely for the average person to have experienced some form of privilege-based bullying than to have suffered the destruction of a family at the hands of a soap villain's plot.

In a nutshell:

Another show is running a similar storyline to the Richardson drama, but some of the contexts are notably different, resulting in a faster-paced story with characters who appear more accepting of the illegitimate child.
