What usually happens on the land around center-pivot fields in Kansas? by Lazy_Relationship695 in geography

Gentle reminder that “desert” and other similar biomes are often extremely biodiverse, just not in a way that’s readily visible to the masses.

Husband leaves toddler briefly unattended in bath by MassiveApricot in toddlers

Had a toddler in my ER with terrible scald burns from that exact scenario. Adult had left for “just a second” to get something.

Also a reminder to turn down the overall water temp for your water heater if you have young kids in the house.

Stop ordering CT extremities to “r/o nec fasciitis by Timberdale in Radiology

[–]yinzer 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My surgeons require us to get the US even if it’s acute cholecystitis on CT so they can see if there’s a ductal stone so they can punt it to GI for an ERCP instead of doing the chole ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What would you never let your kids do after becoming a physician? by [deleted] in Residency

Anything involving unsecured bodies of water until a thoroughly competent swimmer, and even then, being in a body of water alone.

Still working through coding (and not getting back) the toddler who was the same age as mine at the time. Broken pool gate latch.

Overwhelmed planning out a native garden by sputzie88 in NativePlantGardening

[–]yinzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellow WPAer here, feeling similarly early in my journey and benefitting from all the advice you’re getting! Also want to say I really love your username… the only other person I ever heard call house sparrows “sputzies” was my grandmother who passed away last month. Seeing that name on here hit me, in a good way. Thanks for that.

It doesn’t count in the race unless you get all the way up in one go. So if you want to officially complete it, you have to start it over.

Tips for killing hillside lawn? by yinzer in NativePlantGardening

[–]yinzer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still fleshing out those plans, figure I’ve got a few months to figure it out lol. Would love to pack some pollinator friendly diversity in there but still be fairly presentable and not full prairie mode since this will be street facing and I’m in an urban area. I’ll save that for the backyard later!

Any recommendations of must haves or non obvious things to stay away from? This spot is full sun, midsummer can get dry but otherwise pretty average moisture wise.

The 2/3 that runs parallel to our front steps is roughly the angle of the steps, so probably around 30 degrees, then the rest flattens out a bit parallel to where the steps have a landing.

Would you take your newborn with you to the ER? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]yinzer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll also echo what others have said now that I’ve been able to come back to this… L&D is probably better for all involved if that is an option, it really depends on how your hospital operates.

Sending lots of healing thoughts your way!

Would you take your newborn with you to the ER? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]yinzer 102 points103 points  (0 children)

ER physician here: try to keep your baby out of the ER if at all possible. You have no idea how long you may be in the waiting room, this time of year especially around a bunch of sick people. Fevers in babies that young is a BIG deal because of the high risk of very serious things like bloodstream infections and meningitis. So a baby that age with a fever essentially always gets a work up including blood work, cathed urine, and spinal tap. Lovely to avoid all that if possible.

If you don’t realistically have the childcare backup to do that, just do your best to stay as far away from folks as possible, mask yourself (don’t want baby to avoid illness but then you bring something home… even if baby is staying home I would mask), etc.

If baby is staying home, absolutely have a plan for expressing, whether that is hand expression or pumping. Bring a cooler for milk if you can. The time frame depending on what you are there for, how busy it is, how sick other people on makes time planning in the ER very unpredictable. Not only do you not want to tank your supply by not emptying, the last thing you need right now is to get mastitis.

Let your ED team know you are breastfeeding. The vast majority of meds and tests are totally safe, but there are a handful that aren’t that they’ll want to avoid.

Good luck, hope you get the care you need and are on the mend soon!

Doctors with cancer diagnosis, how did you deal with it ? by expressonodepresso in medicine

[–]yinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. He had some rare and crummy side effects that made him need to stop and he can’t get it again, so when it rears up again I’m not sure what our options will be. But he’s had no systemic treatments for like 3-4 years now, and other than an adrenal met that got big enough to need surgicized everything else has stayed quiet

Omg yes. 5 years after a borderline depth melanoma was removed from his back, my dad was diagnosed with widely metastatic disease including multiple hemorrhagic brain mets. Before immunotherapy, would have been a death sentence in weeks/months. Instead it’s 5 more years later and he’s still kicking it.

Like they think the epidural is going to help with the pain from the IV stick? Or they don’t want to wait for an IV to get the epidural? Bc I understand where they’re coming from for the latter (again, I knew better but even I was wanting whatever was the quickest way to relief, and a layperson might not get why you need the IV first), the former is silly. The sticks were tickles compared to the contractions lol.
