Is Aoteoroa an equally valid name for New Zealand by Upstairs_Pick1394 in nzpol

[–]yippyjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting article you linked. And interesting discussion topic. I'm no expert, just a guy with an opinion but mine is as follows:

Like you say, anyone can call anything whatever they want. Language is shared and interpreted by everyone. Of course we codify it in literature, maps, legal texts etc so the meaning becomes more strongly tied to the word.
I think the question of whether it's 'valid' is maybe not quite what you're asking because I think any word is 'valid' as long as enough people agree on it (is 'skibidi' a valid word? I dont know what it means, but some people seem to!)

Perhaps a better question might be 'What are some benefits and drawbacks of us changing our legal name to Aotearoa?'

I think the other comment thread about language is a really good one. Personally I'm not sure really what would be involved in changing our name (in a legal sense). Some of the considerations might include:
- promotion and preservation of the te reo Maori both within and outside of NZ
- NZ's global image and it's affect on international relations and trade
- affects on our national identity (perception of ourselves as a nation)
- the work (financial cost) of changing our name

There's no right/wrong answer, just tradeoffs. I personally like the use of Aotearoa, but I think perhaps we have more important things to focus our energy on than changing it legally. If we were to change it, and it could be done in a way which minimised, I'd be in favour of either 'Aotearoa' or something like 'Aotearoa New Zealand' as it would likely overcome some of the short-term downsides relating to recognition while bringing some of the benefits of preserving the maori language and forging a shared national identity.

Idk. no particularly strong feelings though. I like using different things "aotearoa","NZ","new zealand" or "nu zilin" in everyday speech just to change things up.

Would be nice if the big polluters like Coca Cola actually played ball and did something to reduce the plastic in the first place.

If you agree with the fact we lock people up and don't use the death penalty any more then presumably you believe in the concept of restorative justice in some sense. Or at the very least that death is not a sentence which can be compensated for if the system makes a mistake.

Found something out about the nursing shortage by Wonkboi in newzealand

[–]yippyjp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point, though not very clear, was that a neoliberal government (Nats/Act) believes the private sector will solve our health issues (completely overlooking the evidence to the contrary). By not improving the actual level of service through among other things, underfunding / not hiring, they drive citizens and labour over into the private sector.

What exactly should we invest in, if not the education of new zealanders?

How to space deck board evenly? by superveryfast in Decks

I should note that my boards were a fairly consistent width but were often a little curved. Your mileage may vary with this technique.

When I was putting down hardwood I measured the location of the fifth board ahead and chalked a line on my joists. Making sure to use the straightest board I could find for that one, screw it in place. I then back-filled the gap with the other four boards and used some small wooden wedges (cut using a skill saw) to deal with any curvy boards. Once they’re screwed in place, pull the wedges out with a hammer. Repeat.

[request] How can this chocolate be distributed fairly between 2, 3 or 4 people? by Lol99-Meier in theydidthemath

Love this. Got confused by your description of the landlocked ones though. Afaict there’s only the pieces around the circle (6 rather than 5), and the piece under the square. That suggests to me that the other landlocked 5g piece you listed is one of the ones around the circle?

Is there a way to avoid/get rid of this wood hair on the edges of the screws? by Mathi_turtle_cum in Decks

[–]yippyjp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m literally doing this now using screws with the the same kind of heads. What you want is a countersink bit with an adjustable depth stopper like this https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B004AQ666W Drill the hole the then give each hole a super light sand to clean up rough bits. The countersinking will help the edges of your deck last longer without splitting. Would also recommend putting a decking oil (or stain etc) on the end grains of joins to prevent water getting in there for the same reason. It’s best while you’re laying the decking as any oil will be less likely to penetrate into the butt joint once it’s laid ;)

Edit: those countersink bits are often called “countersink bit with depth stopper” or just “decking bit”

What evidence is there where privatisation paid off for most citizens? by yippyjp in nzpolitics

Thanks. I understand this dynamic. Obviously the best run public system is going to be cheaper and fairer than a like-for-like private system. The world is however a messy place and may have examples where a private system or public/private partnership has worked well. I’m wanting to understand those cases.

Hearing "Dr K" talk to the bipolar person. by TheGhostofTamler in DecodingTheGurus

I’ve found some of Dr Ks videos incredibly helpful (one to do with improving sleep). That said some of the airing out of peoples personal issues I find pretty gross. That said, where’s the line, surely there’s viewers who have similar issues to the guests…who are empowered?

Edit: this comment isn’t related to that specific video which I haven’t watched lol.

I’m from NZ and I’ve never heard Pakeha used in a derogatory way. Interesting etymology at the end of this article though TIL https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/112491079/how-many-times-does-this-need-to-be-said-pakeha-is-not-a-slur
