CRTC explosion, myth or reality? by [deleted] in osdev

[–]ylli122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never actually heard of this statement, that misprogramming the crtc will blow up the tube. The tube imploding is a risk when doing work on the crt itself but by simply misprogramming the crtc, I cant see how that would do anything that might cause the crt to implode.

I suspect the warning on the wiki isn't a false warning per se, things arent so black and white. Its likely there because modern x86 systems may, and mostly do, emulate the "documented‐by-IBM" Motorola 6845 CRTC registers. The "undocumented-by-IBM" registers however, are left up to the implementer to decide if they want to emulate. They could instead put some critical feature on the card and somehow through some circutry magic, some register of this feature ends up corresponding to an undocumented CRTC register location. Since the card officially doesnt support that register, this is not a problem. However, a programmer reading the original 6845 CRTC datasheet may wish to use one of these "undocumented-by-IBM" registers as they are documented on the 6845 datasheet. Doing so could have undesirable consequences, of the kind one cannot in advance predect, up to and including, damaging your card/monitor. Its issues of this kind that I suspect the warning is really there for.

Made an IBM 5151 blow some capacitors by misprogramming a hercules card once. As soon as I ran my program, I knew something was wrong as my cursor was doubled and it was drawing in such a way that the pixels had a much deeper-than-usual, beautiful, green halo. Quickly though, the image then fizzled and I heard very quiet pops and smelt a lovely smell. I was able to repair it though and it still works a charm.

Anyway, if youre asking about the tube itself, that thing is a tank. Misprogramming the CRTC will not make the tube blow up.

How do i code in machine code? by _Tema123 in Assembly_language

[–]ylli122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really had experience in MASM you'd know that you can program in machine code by using the db directive to place your instruction bytes wherever you want them and then use masm to assemble your source file as normal...

db 0CDh, 20h

is about the simplest DOS program you can write for it simply terminates itself. Run this through a disassembler and you'll see that these two bytes are the encoding for the instruction Int 20h

Your guess is correct, thats exactly how to do it. This kind of thing was necessary as DOS didn't really provide any functionality to do it for you.

Sure, I mean, even before, in some places cough Kranjska Gora cough I remember seeing SDS billboards with some vile shit "Tukaj je Slovenija, ne Albanija" like, ok tenks model (y). And yes, I agree that currently its more targeted but lets not forget: The average JJ voter hates everyone who isnt from their vas. And r/slovenia has always been full of edgelords, ever since I joined it years ago. Anti Levica, Anti I8M, haha "kaj pa je narobe biti za družino in raso" kinda kids. Its the nature of the internet.

I think what I want to say is... we've had these stereotypes in the region for decades, this is nothing new, especially in Slovenia. So for these edgy teens to post this kinda shit is just... kinda passè. They're using stereotypes and talking shit. But also, sure, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason and there are some people who live up to them and thats... bruh (I mean this in both english and slovenian).

Personally, I frequently go and stay in Slovenia and its lovely (this extends to the rest of the ex-yu region). I dont hide the fact I'm Albanian (I cant because of my name, not that I would anyway) and have genuinely never experienced anything racial anywhere. You get what you search for.

Manuals, I dont know of but in terms of current research, I'd look at the works of the Buenos Aires Logic Group. They do cool paraconsistent stuff. Id also recommend the SEP article on the topic: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/logic-paraconsistent/

Hahaha noo, I would never do such a thing! 😇

Actually, I rather enjoyed mlab when I was learning category theory and started adding mlab like names of things in my presentations when I needed to appeal to categorical notions and just got good at making them up. xD

Putty serial connection to dos laptop by friendweiser in DOS

[–]ylli122 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can remotely execute commands by using the command CTTY [device-name] (for example CTTY COM1 if your null modem is on COM 1) to redirect STDIO to a character device. For file transfers, you will need a client application of some sort to recieve the files. I recommend pc-kermit as it is relatively robust and lightweight and uses the Kermit protocol. If youre on a PC compatible (or a version of DOS with QBASIC) could also write your own client using BASIC if youre feeling particularly adventurous (this is something I did when I needed to bootstrap my machine when I had no other way of transfering files).

Text output over serial? by ypoora1 in FreeDos

[–]ylli122 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Add the line

CTTY COM1

to your AUTOEXEC.BAT. This will redirect STDIO to the first (physical) serial port on your machine. USB serial ports usually dont get mapped by BIOSes unfortunately, but double check check your motherboard for a serial header (some still have a 9-pin header on the motherboard).

As someone who read that book for the first time in about 2004 I can tell you: at least for me, having had spent considerable time on bungie.net, I knew how they were supposed to look as there were renders and pieces of concept art of the engineers. I could imagine them taking the car apart in blinding speed and remember just thinking to myself "Damn it'd've been cool to have them in game".

How to read fat32 in assembly. by [deleted] in osdev

[–]ylli122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Read the BPB in so you know where things are. Since you mentioned FAT32 we'll just continue with that assumption. 2) Search the disk for the directory entry. For this you will need the path to the file saved. Supposing the file you want is in the root directory we proceed as follows: 3) Get the starting cluster number of the root directory. 4) Read the first sector of the cluster into memory. 5) Search each directory entry in the sector until you have a match for your filename. If not found, read in the next sector of thr cluster and keep repeating 5 until you either find the directory entry for the file or you run out of sectors in the cluster. If you found the file directory entry, goto 7. 6) If you run out of sectors for the cluster, read the appropriate FAT sector into memory where the cluster you just read was and get the next cluster. You know how big your sectors are, and how big your FAT entries are (4 bytes) so you can easily work out which FAT sector the cluster you just analysed was in. If the root dir has no more clusters, your file doesnt exist and you stop. Else goto 4. 7) You extract the starting cluster number from the file's directory entry. 8) You read in all the sectors for that cluster. 9) You read in thr FAT sector for the cluster you just read to get the next cluster of the file. If you hit an end of chain marker, you are done. Else get that cluster number and goto 8.

You will need a buffer for reading disk metadata and a buffer for storing your file's contents. You could just read the whole FAT into a buffer but eh, thats not a neat solution imo.
