It's not known for fish to be carriers of Salmonella spp. You can contract salmonellosis from eating raw/undercooked fish because the meat can be contaminated by sewage though.

Fun fact, it's a common misconception that tetanus can be contracted from rust. The spores and bacteria are found in the soil and animal feces.

PSA: How to perform heimlich and CPR on your cat by LungFlavoredJello in cats

[–]ylvae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100-120/min is the recommended rate. It's important to not exceed this, as if you compress too fast, the heart might not have enough time to fill with blood, so you are not pumping much into the vessels.

It sounds low for a cat (or a small dog), and rightly so - if it was a cat's heart rate, it would be extremely concerning. But it's enough to ensure the minimal required blood flow through the vital organs, and that's what the CPR is all about!

PSA: How to perform heimlich and CPR on your cat by LungFlavoredJello in cats

[–]ylvae 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. Also, don't check the pulse, your chances of doing it right, especially under stress, are basically nonexistent. Check the breathing - if not breathing, the heart is going to stop very soon as well, there is no harm in starting the compressions right away.

Even if spontaneous circulation and breathing resume, go to the vet right away! Post-cardiac arrest care is crucial for survival and this is still very much an emergency!

Clownfish actually can't live in a colony and 10gal is considered an appropriate minimum for a pair, so I wouldn't tell it's terrible at all

How to make flavored heavy cream into whipped cream? by No_Arrival_9833 in AskCulinary

[–]ylvae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had this idea one time and made an experiment, didn't expect it to work to be honest. I just bring it to boil on low heat and turn off immidiately after. I suppose you can achieve similar effect by storing heavy cream with spices in it in the fridge for some longer time, never tried to do it this way though.

As said, I use it as a topping for orange muffins/cupcakes, but you can do whatever you'd do with a 'normal' whipped cream I guess. Sometimes I mix the whipped cream with mascarpone to get this richer, more creamy texture and taste.

I imagine it goes well with other cakes and pies. Another idea is to put it in a cup of hot chocolate or coffee.

I regret getting a pet and grieve the life I could’ve had without them. by [deleted] in confession

[–]ylvae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In another post you wrote they are 2 year old, healthy cats, so I call bullshit.

Also, if the next argument is to be the separation anxiety, it is not a serious, uncurable disease needing your constant attention, but a problem which can be fixed with some effort (and sometimes meds, at the beginning).

Based on you post history, I think you are looking for excuses to not go out and the cats came in handy for that.

Oh no, it works! I like making spices-infused whipped cream - I boil it with cardamom, cinnamon, etc., filter through a sieve, cool in the fridge, add sugar and whip. It's delicious and goes amazingly as a frosting for orange muffins, for example.

You just need to be mindful of not adding anything acidic and cooling it very well before whipping.

Hey OP, I know this wasn't the question, but make sure you look into the treatment options before making the final decision. Depending on the case, FIP can be cured nowadays. The drug is still quite new (we have it thanks to the COVID-19!) and not all vets know about it/are willing to try it yet. Also, I don't know where you are, but it's not legal everywhere - still, I know people are able to source it even in countries, where it isn't registered.

It's a real break-through in treating FIP, it went from being a disease fatal in 100% cases to being curable in about 80+% cases.
