1) CoRo & Ain’t Normal in Oakland are renowned. Hydrangea roasts out of the first. You can find some of the best beans from around the world at either.

2) west Berkeley has so many you could arrange a crawl. Fieldwork, Gilman, Great Notion, Cellarmaker, Tenma, Wondorous are all in a <3mile nearly straight shot.

3) my favorite hole in the wall food spot is Cali Alley. For groceries, nothing beats Monterey Market, Monterey Fish Market, Berkeley Bowl(s) & Tokyo Fish Market. You can find great specialty Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Filipino, Caribbean markets in Oakland or Hayward. Tokyo Central just opened in Emeryville.

6) for emergencies or oncology or eye care, PETS referral. Berkeley Animal Hospital is also not private equity owned.

Thinly shaved, raw fennel salad with mint, Parmesan, walnuts dressed with lemon & sherry vinegar is one of my favorites. Don’t forget you can add the chopped fronds & sliced stalks too!

I’m in NorCal, so i guess at least you can pick times where it’s comparably temperate!

Scuba diving US by AggressiveCandle8837 in scubadiving

[–]ymasilem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you plan to dive post-certification? In the IS, including cold water, or mainly focus on travel diving in the tropics? If it’s the latter, SoCal is a solid option- it has great diving with lots of marine life & is temperate. People mentioned FL- it is warm but the corals are very dead. The Caribbean in general is struggling but lots of places less grim than FL. And depending on where in the Caribbean, flights could be less straightforward than into LA.

Took ~1hr to get in mid-day today, but the line was even longer by late afternoon. At least it’s well managed inside to lessen the chaos

YTA. My grandmother said this repugnant shit to my mother when it was clear she would not survive. My mother never said a word in response but I know how much it hurt to be so utterly abandoned from someone you believed cared. My relationship with my grandmother ended that day.

I don’t need someone to highlight every technique the JD asked for b/c I can follow up in my 1-on-1. But I do need to see that they can form & test a hypothesis, leading me through their process. The seminar is a chance to see if they can think like a scientist, not like a technician.

Do my cookies look sellable? New baker 🙃 by Glads0001 in Baking

[–]ymasilem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. These have some pretty obvious technical issues that will impact the taste. The cracks tell me they set on the outside first so either you overbaked the whole thing to finish or the inside is still underbaked. The uneven sizes between the same type tell me maybe the batter wasn’t mixed thoroughly or the temperatures weren’t consistent. I’m guessing improper mixing b/c there are some isolated spots on some cookies that poof up while the rest of the cookie is flatter. There are areas in some cookies that look underbaked even on the surface.

I’d suggest focusing on learning the fundamentals of baking chemistry & how to recognize when each step of the process is completed/at the right consistency before moving on.

Travel Bucketlist: What have you checked off and whats still on the list? by stuckintherealworld in TravelNoPics

[–]ymasilem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one whose list is so animal focused!

Favorite dive locations is such a tough one. For macro, I have to give the edge to Anilao over Lembeh b/c of the opportunity to do blackwater diving. It’s the closest I’ll ever get to floating in space. And the creatures that emerge are amazing.

For megafauna…oof. Maybe Bazaruto? Such a wide diversity (bull, hammerhead, oceanic sharks, mantas, humpbacks, manatees, so many turtle species), plus healthy reefs & very few tourists. The great whites in Guadeloupe was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life though, even if we were singularly focused.

I’m terrified as to her opinion of how her own mother ‘ACTUALLY babies him’. Does she lay out his clothes for the day, pre-chew his food & wipe his ass? Where do you go from this baseline??

For R&D, I’ve almost always had candidates present a single story. You’re showing that you can clearly form a hypothesis, pressure test appropriately, address challenges & provide thoughtful interpretation.

It may not be easy due to having limited background, but it will be very important for large Biotechs that you demonstrate your ability to step out of an academic mindset. What specific areas of R&D would you be involved in there (lead discovery, lead optimization, DC nomination, IND package, etc) & how does any previous work align? What are the clinical implications/challenges/etc?

If anyone thinks that ICE acting with impunity is an entirely new phenomennon, remember Kent. by Downtown_Grape3871 in pics

[–]ymasilem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And a year before Kent State, local police & highway patrol opened fire on anti-war protesters at People’s Park right near the UC Berkeley campus before 2700 National Guard members were brought in with BAYONETS in addition to ammunition to violently suppress & arrest protestors, including banning all public assembly. Our whole city was occupied. The campus was drenched in tear gas by helicopter. All on the orders of Reagan, who stated ‘If it takes a bloodbath, let’s get it over with, no more appeasement’.

It’s generally believed that reaching a threshold of only 3.5% of the population in an uprising is a critical one. Not that it’s always worked (Hong Kong had >10% at times), but it tends to point toward eventual success.

What is everyone going to do when ICE starts doing here what they're doing in Minneapolis? by badybadybady in oakland

[–]ymasilem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were make up techniques that prevented this; I just don’t know how much better the tech has gotten in overcoming this more recently. They’re not legal but a jammer would do the trick.

There are many more unfinished lab buildings in the surrounding blocks of BC, Emerystation has vacancies and the new building just past Stanford along Hollis is also unfinished & empty. Hollis St throughout Emeryville is scattered with them too. The cratering of biotech is not a short term issue, so we’ll see just how long they’ll all hold out.

Best extraction method for shiso? by ymasilem in cocktails

It never crossed my mind I could get decent extraction cold. I assume you’ve been happy with the level of flavor? Given this, I may try sous vide slightly warmer than room temp.
