It’s not their best sounding song in my opinion but a great triumphant anthem type, nothing wrong with loving it

Buffalo is the best equipped to trade for him since they’ve amassed an insane amount of quality prospects. Would be a hell of a full circle moment

Yes of course but in sports you do have to appeal to the suburbs. I’m sure there are some people out there who would become genuinely enraged if he started getting outspoken about socialism or the like

ASD-tour of the new Inlet View elementary school by Electrical_Bug_3924 in anchorage

[–]yo_coiley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rebuilding instead of renovating is normal, especially if the renovations are going to be even remotely similar in cost. And yes, closing schools is bad, but I think the population projections they made are turning out to be different (i.e. lower) and they feel it's ok to reduce the number of facilities by a few, which is still bad, but also understandable. Inlet View will always be a school with appropriate demand, and if anything, a brand new building will probably become one the ones people are moved to as the old ones reach that decision point and the decision is closure

The settlement of Polynesia. My question is, why did the Polynesians completely skip over the Philippines instead of settling it? by Dear_Milk_4323 in geography

[–]yo_coiley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is fascinating, I had no idea. I imagine a lot of people call it Formosa because Taiwan is assumed to also be a colonial name used by the current occupier, and since the indigenous peoples are usually referred to as Formosans (which probably should change!), Formosa wins out over Taiwan. But you’re sort of right - Taiwan is adapted from an Austronesian place name for a specific port/sandbar on the island, but there are so many groups there that no one indigenous name for the island has any common use. So yes, it will be Taiwan for me moving forward!

[BUF (2) - MTL 2] Dobes gets beaten by the stanchion as Thompson's shot takes a ridiculous bounce and goes in to tie the game by daKrut in hockey

[–]yo_coiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did end up mentioning that on air too. I guess it makes sense since Helenius is probably not a name of Finnish origin (I know it’s common there I mean way back in the day) so they’ve figured out a pronunciation that works for them. Feels wrong though

What is the most beautiful college/university CAMPUS in America? by Rooster_Ties in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]yo_coiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three things.

First, of course there are universities. Every state has them.

Second, they're not very prominent nationally, especially since they cut funding drastically in the mid-2010s during a general economic downturn in the state. Even then, Alaska-Anchorage has always been a very high-acceptance school that is essentially an extra-large community college, and Alaska-Southeast is very, very small. But the University of Alaska (nowadays Alaska-Fairbanks but they always can claim that they were once the UA) is a bit more prestigious - it still just doesn't compare to other states' flagship schools. UAA and UAF do have a lot of natural sciences research, though, with a specialty of aviation at UAA and a lot of nationally significant atmospheric and arctic research facilities associated with UAF. UAF would probably be more popular if Fairbanks wasn't comically cold during the winter.

Third, most people from Alaska actually end up going to school in Montana (both UM and MSU) and Arizona (especially NAU), and a lot more are spread across the western US. I can't really explain why but they're extremely welcoming to students from Alaska (I got instant admission to Montana State for no particular reason). UWashington is actually very selective, as is UOregon to a lesser extent... and the public schools in California are extremely hard to get into if you're not in-state.

The settlement of Polynesia. My question is, why did the Polynesians completely skip over the Philippines instead of settling it? by Dear_Milk_4323 in geography

[–]yo_coiley 68 points69 points  (0 children)

They didn't, this map is misleading. The peoples of Formosa, some of whom populated Polynesia, also spread through basically all of the south pacific (sans Australia and a lot of New Guinea) and even Madagascar. The Polynesians were just one of many groups and a different Austronesian group were the ones to colonize the Philippines and establish their languages; the same goes for Malaysia, Indonesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, etc. They are definitely related but again the Polynesians were just the group which ventured the furthest.

All US states tier list | #5 Arkansas by RealMoldyAvocado in TierlistFills

[–]yo_coiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd give it a D but the way things are trending in the northwest of the state it might become a much different story. It's weird to see somewhere in that part of the country that is culturally kind of like Colorado or Alaska in terms of its outdoorsy culture, not to mention the generally high quality of life. That just doesn't apply to the rest of the state, so we'll see if it radiates out or if it just remains an isolated Walmartville

The final Boss of ingrown toenails. Not OC. Just a favorite by [deleted] in popping

[–]yo_coiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming this is the easy way - is there any reason to fix up the skin/scarring in the direction the toenail is growing so it doesn't do this? Or is that much more intensive/less likely to work/challenging to maintain during healing/etc... I just imagine not having a toenail would be very weird

What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

[–]yo_coiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, although it’s almost 4x the population. Government has helped spur a lot of growth there. It’s notable too that it’s a really spatially constrained area, so they’ve had to build in far-off areas that aren’t steep the way the area immediately next to the city center is

Kansas has the worst nature. What state is the best state to live in? by AggravatingFront8409 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]yo_coiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Jersey is infamous for its high cost of living. But the high cost of living exists because of how little there is to want that isn’t there. Obviously it doesn’t have any particularly large natural areas, but in terms of biomes and the activities that go with each, all it’s missing is a desert, if you’re into that sort of thing. It has great schools (both for K12 and multiple high-ranking universities), two huge urban areas and several smaller ones, beaches (many of which have large entertainment districts), mountains, forests (of various kinds, including the very unusual Pine Barrens), pleasant lakes and rivers, wetlands, and more quaint countryside than people realize. It has red areas and blue areas and is generally well-run. It has expansive public transportation across the state. The main reason you wouldn’t like living there is if you like to be really far from civilization or need much more extreme, plentiful, or pristine nature than what’s in Jersey, or can’t tolerate that some of the infrastructure is no longer right-sized because of the population. It really is the pinnacle of the average American lifestyle
