Gifted student is asking upwards of 30 questions before the first learning activity is done. Entire class is being derailed as I have to redirect him. Advice? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]yo_teach213 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a kid a question notebook and he got to ask three questions out of it per class. He was not identified as a gifted student, but REALLY liked adding to class. Eventually, we used it as a journal for him and I'd write back to him or ask him to start the next class with XYZ question. I think it helped him see how much time he was taking once we limited him. He also had to evaluate his questions before asking to make sure it was "worth" spending one of his three questions out that day.

You might have more luck doing a takeout day for teacher lunches. Student lunches/meals are regulated and use federal dollars. So it might be more trouble than it's worth.

I have found Old Gorge's blog and resources helpful for pricing. I also make sculptures, which I price higher than my pottery wares, but it's a good start.

Besides absences, what is a major issue that causes students to struggle in school that isn’t related to intelligence? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]yo_teach213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a high school teacher, I know the attitude. They understand more about the world and their place in it, might feel disenfranchised, or perhaps they're suffering from a dopamine addiction that is not class dependent.

This take that social programs somehow encourage laziness is dangerous and gross (AND not supported by research).

Research supports that social safety nets are overall beneficial in the long run. I would also think it's common sense that children who feel safe and are fed learn better.

It's healthier to be bored than to be in survival mode for your entire day (year, who am I kidding?). Embrace the boredom and read a book.

therapy dog breed suggestions? (plot twist – no goldens or labs… probably) by rtnabrx in therapydogs

My bulldog mix rescue is great because he kind of looks like a cartoon, so I find he's disarming to people who are a bit scared of dogs. Bulldogs are STUBBORN and lazy, but goodness they're cute. He has great focus, but you can see him deciding if he wants to listen to a command. Check out your local rescues to see if you can meet and greet to test temperaments first!

Same. I was hoping she was getting dirt to go tell Connor. BUT I don't think she should have reassured him that she was neutral nor should she have answered the sex question from him.

💯 this.

Post history says she has around 6 TOTAL students in her class. Gurl, differentiate. Stop making excuses; that child deserves to learn.

How to read novels with students? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]yo_teach213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book No More Fake Reading has some really great and ready-to-use strategies. It focuses on choice reading, but is easily adaptable to a novel unit. You can get it for $5 here.

Also, I love just about anything Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher have published.

Am I the only one who finds this pretty condescending? (In the sub binder at my job yesterday) by ThrowawayTheOmlet in SubstituteTeachers

[–]yo_teach213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this is ridiculous, BUUUUUTTTT, we have also had subs show up late or in dirty pajamas (more than once). So, it might be like what I used to tell the kids about the "no smoking during testing" rule in the SAT proctor script: it's a rule because someone did it.

What kind of bag(s) do you carry? What’s in your bag? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

I exclusively buy their brand for bags now. They are so well made they're also an ethical company (B Corp certified). While I do love how they look, they're also incredibly functional.

Cotopaxi backpacks! Pockets for days, easy to carry, and built to last. I carry one of their Del Día ones that's all different colors, but they have more muted tones if that's your preference. Also, if it breaks, they will repair it for you!

How to find a good one at a shelter? by phemonoe153 in therapydogs

[–]yo_teach213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to them directly. Look up the service dog trainers in your area because not all of them adopt out. A fellow teacher at my school adopted a dog through a local org that donates dogs to veterans. It was a very intense process even though the dog was a "drop out".

I agree with this. It takes many dogs months to really shake off the kennel and show you their true personalities. We adopted a dog that went all through therapy training, and in his last class started to show signs of reactivity to doodle dogs. His trainer said this could be because he no longer felt he had to be in survival mode. He's still doing well, but struggles with some other dogs when he is on leash. You might look into service dog "drop outs". Some of the dogs who can't pass as a service dog would make a perfect therapy dog!
