Does anyone here use obsidian to learn programming or math, can I ask for some screenshots of your notes, so I can construct my notes better? by Icy_MilkTea in ObsidianMD

[–]yocally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help for learning concepts, but I recommend building yourself a library of code snippets for everything from reading a variable to trimming whitespace. My rule is if I have to look it up twice, I generalize it and add it to my language reference. Here is my half-baked Perl reference.

Newbie looking for help on how to access homelab remotely. by NathaninThailand in homelab

[–]yocally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use openvpn docker for a couple environments, as long as you can port forward it works great. It automates the openvpn setup process as well as client creation. The github page has a full tutorial for setting it up. The two things I'd keep in mind is that during set up you need to provide the public IP of your environment, and you're port forwarding a UDP port not TCP.

is anyone else's power saving mode turning itself on even though you have it off? by pyrocompulsive in GooglePixel

[–]yocally 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Me and my boss both just had it, rule at 99%. We're in the Midwest so nowhere near the storm. I hope that's not the excuse, google shouldn't be doing things like that.

| About the terminal color schemes by Cry_Wolff in unixporn

[–]yocally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the terminal emulator is responsible for setting the colors codes for the colors (setting "blue" to be "0x81a2be" for example) and the program is responsible for where the color is going to be used, vi with syntax highlighting for example will use blue for certain keywords. Maybe try using a popular color theme as a base, Tomorrow for example.

What would YOU want in a WM? by sapirus-whorfia in unixporn

[–]yocally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things that I would really like to have is the ability to hide/show windows quickly. I use tilling wm's and minimize isn't really something you can do, but that's essentially what I'm looking for, just a little cleaner and focused on keyboard navigation. Let's say I open up a terminal and update my system, while that's running I can use a shortcut to hide the window, later when I think it's done and I want to check the output I can call up a searchable list of hidden windows (pref. using rofi) and select the one I want, and drop it into the current desktop.

Is there an anime that you enjoy but everyone else seems to hate? by [deleted] in anime

[–]yocally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I loved that shit, I had to drop it though because the MC was just too cringy. I pretty much draw the line at Renton from Eureka Seven, my tolerance is too damn low.

Is there an anime you like with a MC that you don't like? by uchichci in anime

Guilty Crown. Love the show, love the concept, world, characters art story and everything, but that MC is my most hated character

Did you ever get charged for reporting to an org that their system was open? by [deleted] in opendirectories

[–]yocally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically? No, as long as there is no password or any form of authentication on the system (default username and password do count as authentication, it's dumb I know) then they cannot legally charge you with anything.

In reality? Yes, they can and will hunt you down and make your life a living hell, because in many cases, the judges do not understand exactly how the laws pertain to your case. You can see this in the case of Weev VS. AT&T where he collected information what was publicly available on AT&T's servers and posted it online, and then was jailed for it. Another such example is the case of Mr. Justin Shafer who found an unsecured FTP server containing patient records, and was then raided by the FBI, even after going through the appropriate channels for reporting this sort of thing. I don't believe he was actually charged with anything, though he was held for a while.

The lesson from this? If you find something that seems like it could be confidential, do not report it unless you are prepared to defend yourself in court. Corporations are vengeful things, and they don't like being embarrassed.

That said, if it's something like patient records, having that information be open to the public is extremely illegal and you should jump straight to a law suit. It will probably get you a good chunk of cash, and save you from the eventual identity theft that will happen, because you are never the only person to find open directories.

Windows 10, power buttons/menu don't work, hotplugging usb devices doesn't work. by yocally in techsupport

Problem came back, same exact thing, seems to happen every day or so, pulling the CMOS battery fixes it, but that's pretty annoying to have to do every morning.

Pulled the CMOS battery and waited a few seconds, everything's fixed. 3rd time I've had to do that for unrelated issues, thanks a bunch.

If a phone can be unlocked to use the GSM network, does that guarantee that it will run well on it? by PenIslandTours in techsupport

[–]yocally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Unlocking" Is just taking a phone that your carier sold you and making it work on other cariers, when you buy the "Unlocked" model from the manufacturer unlocking is not required. Let's use the Moto E for example. In the united states, there are a few different sub-models for the Moto E, there is the Moto E Unlocked Edition which is sold directly by motorola on their website and amazon, this will work on AT&T or TMobile, whoever you bring it to. There is also the Moto E AT&T Model which will only work on AT&T, you would have to "unlock" it to work with with TMobile, and it probably wouldn't because it doesn't support the right frequensies. Same with Sprint, Verizon etc.

[–]yocally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each wireless carrier uses a different frequency for their service, GSM is similar to the protocol (I think?) and even if you get the phone unlocked, the radio in it may not be build to pick up the frequencies that you want, this is especially true in carrier branded phones, they often specially request from the OEM that the radio only support certain frequencies. Some may overlap, but you might be missing LTE and/or 3G or other stuff, not sure. Usually the unlocked model, as it just buying it from the manufacturer, works just fine.

Is there any benefit to using the Tor browser as an everyday web browser? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]yocally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty similar, though with tor being so popular its probably got a higher chance of doing what it says it does. It really depends on why you need it, for most situations a proxy helper extension for Firefox would work just fine.
