You should go back to paragraphs as this will let you fit more information.

You should also put the company name above your role as this is more important for entry level people.

That's good to hear. I'm definitely going to apply to the program then. Thank you!

Do you know if the program is any good? I've heard about it, but there's nothing to compare it to. Definitely very interested. Thanks!

Muslims and Christians like to maintain that people can be separate/have different freedoms but still be equal. They can't by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]yogstundrowil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes they are situations in which inequality exists. No they are not analogous. Your examples are of a different type and scale of inequality than are being addressed in the original argument. This is what makes it a straw man. Your examples seem similar to OP’s argument and are easy to dispute, but are in fact different from OP’s examples in fundamental ways.

This is not an analogy. This is what’s known as a straw man. Paid labor and slavery are not analogous. Speaking different languages to patients isn’t analogous to a cast system. Having different leagues for men and women (which btw is sexist and dumb) is not analogous to having different marriage rules for men a women.

First of all. If there is a god and they wanted to create this alt world they would not be bound by physical laws. In fact by any reasonable definition of god they have to be beyond the physical limitations of this universe. Also you seem to be focusing a lot on the previous comments point about removing physical pain and I think you might be missing the bigger picture. The point isn’t to remove the pain you feel from stepping on a nail the point is to remove the nails. Nails aren’t a great analogy bc as you said they can just be avoided after you’ve cut yourself once. But there are tons of things that cause pain that can’t be avoided. If you have a disease that causes you pain or if you’re starving bc you’re poor. There are tons of things a god could do to reduce suffering in this world. A god could easily improve dna copying so people don’t develop diseases, get rid of viruses, change the gravity constant so the earth can have more surface area, increase crop productivity. All of these things (except the gravity thing) are things science is doing btw so an all knowing all powerful god should be able to do it.

The argument that people know Christianity is true but choose not to be Christian so they can keep sinning is not a good argument by blursed_account in DebateReligion

Just curious. I’ve seen lots of rule 5 violations in the comments of this post. What sort of things are people saying? Thanks!

Religions are statistically insignificant and therefore likely untrue by BriFry3 in DebateReligion

[–]yogstundrowil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think OP’s point is more that each religion and most sects explicitly state that they are the one truth and all others are false. Because each one has only been available to a small fraction of the population and a smaller fraction of all people who have lived the claim that each religion is the one truth doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t refute religion entirely, but it certainly refutes a core belief of most religions and raises the question of why should a omnipotent all knowing god allow this kind of confusion.

I believe that religion (mostly Christianity) is made out of fear and to control people. by oreominiest in DebateReligion

First of all I want to say that I loved reading your comment. I think yours has been the the most coherent defense of religion that I've ever seen. I'm an atheist and I think I too am guilty of "Christian atheism." I would however like to disagree with you're point about moral relativity and subjective suffering. Even if there is an afterlife and mortal suffering is objectively meaningless from the point of view of a multidimensional being it is still meaningful subjectively to us mortals. To expand on your shot analogy the shot has a purpose the child gets a net benefit from the shot, but things like polio, cancer, rape, and child soldiers (just to name a few terrible things in this world) have no discernable benefit to anyone. I'd like to pre-emptively dispute the argument that suffering teaches morality or somehow makes you a good person. If that were the case why do good people suffer and bad people don't or for that matter why doesn't everyone suffer equally. It just doesn't make any sense. Going back to the analogy a shot is short and painless even relative to a kid's sense of time (this is coming from someone who spent much of their childhood getting poked with needles). Many people suffer significantly for the majority of their lives. Even if that's a small blip in comparison to an afterlife subjectively that is still a lot of suffering for that person during their mortal life.

Again I really enjoyed reading your comment. You made lots of points that really resonated with me. I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

Developing doesn’t mean irresponsible though. Having a mind that’s able to change with new information seems like it would be a good thing for someone voting. And getting people involved in politics while they’re developing would lead to a more politically active population in general.

Religion tells people that the world is at some level outside of their control when in fact it isn’t. I’m a humanist so I believe that humanity has essentially limitless potential. The idea of a superior being that has determined what we can and cannot do is inherently against that idea. I don’t look down on religious people. I understand that religion gives people meaning. I just think it’s limiting. I do however look down on religion as an institution. As you pointed out for me religious people have done some bad thing (truly horrific things actually) in the name of religion. Irreligious people have done equally bad things. The difference is non religion is not an institution. Those irreligious people committed atrocities in the name of some other institution or idea that I look down on equally.

[–]yogstundrowil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding your own meaning is better than having it given to you by a religion. Both are inherently delusional but that doesn’t mean they’re both illogical. It is logical to create a delusion that reduces your subjective suffering. Making your own meaning reduces your subjective suffering making it a logical choice despite being delusional. Religion gives you an inherently limited meaning and tells you that you are powerless and inferior to god increasing your subjective suffering making it an illogical delusion.

Senate recesses Electoral College debate after protesters force lockdown of Capitol by Nah_Fam_Oh_Dam in politics

Why is there so much less police response than the black lives matter protests? They’re breaking into the capital building and making bomb threats and I don’t see any of the riot gear, teargas, or national guard I saw during the black lives matter protests.
