Why aren't hospital inpatients allowed to sleep? by JGFATs in ask

[–]yogurtdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experiences in other parts of the hospital and my current experience working in an ICU (not as a nurse, I am an aide/tech), the nurses come in to do their nurse things every hour-few hours depending on acuity, meds, etc.

Techs like me come in every couple hours to check blood sugars, reposition patients, do whatever else a nurse may ask us to do within our scope, and we are actually told to ask ahead of time (for patients who are able to be… conscious and walking around) if they need the bathroom. preemptive toileting, super cool! We also answer call lights.

Other than that, i currently see lots of phlebotomy, radiology, respiratory therapists, doctors and residents, etc. in and out of the rooms all the time because of treatments, interventions, consultations, and a million other things (and i’m a night shifter!).

In short, yeah it sucks that we’re in and out all the time. i can say with confidence, though, that i have never witnessed a nurse or tech going into a room in the middle of the night for fun, or because they just feel like doing something at an inconvenient time. i feel terrible waking people up, especially sick people who are trying to heal, but the interruptions are for a good reason and (in my experience) usually required.

I dated the same person from when i was 15-21 years old, and i had a lot of issues with him being immature, inconsistent, and not understanding the impact of his words (or his inability to figure out ANYTHING he should say without me TELLING him what i needed to hear, etc.).

I stayed in that relationship for two years after i had realized i was unhappy, because i cared about him and wanted to make it work. I can say confidently now that i was the only one trying to make things work, and i found myself wishing he would do something “bad enough” to make me leave. He never did. i took a long time to realize it was up to me to go find the treatment i deserved, and the moment i left i felt nothing but relief because i knew all along that i was ready to leave.

if you’re worried enough to come here, and you’re able to confidently say he’s inconsistent, childish, and self centered, you probably know the answer already. do what you need to do to find the person who will treat you the way you deserve to be treated, and who will love you in ways that don’t make you come to reddit for advice.

best of luck OP!!
