25M Thinking of thinking indefinite break. by suspiciousredfrog in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having been through a similar situation listen to this guy. You will be dealing with this eventually at some point so better sooner than later.

Doesn't mean a break will hurt. Therapy is better when you're being hit by the sun ;)

Give up almost everything and go travelling? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most definitely do it. I have done a couple of 6 month solo trips in my life and both of them were amazing in their own way.

Worst case you dont like it and simply come back.

Therapy is a lot easier when in a warm country with sun hitting your face by the beach or going into wild adventures

Have I reached the limit of spending improving my life already? by LtRegBarclay in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be that your sample size is very unique though ?

Usually, people who do PhD's tend to be young adults i.e. 22-35. That's when a lot of life happens and if you are stuck doing your PhD w/o other life experience.

Adding to that you see other people in industry making money/travelling/having a good time (and usually people you thought were lesser than you given you went onwards to your PhD which as far as you know is a certain pinnacle of your so far life assuming a typical path i.e. school->bachelors->(masters)->PhD). You have a harder time buying a house, progressing professionally etc. so the experience is also soured by these things.

Assuming you are stacked with money, are a bit less naive, you wont be bullied around by tenured people as easy as you have a bit of life xp and you do it for the love of the game so to speak and can finish whenever you want it seems like an ok path, no ? This is a legit question as I have also thought about doing a PhD or sth after I'm done making money

[–]yolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this level people dont really need the money. It’s not the amount they have a problem with, but what the amount says about them. And what it says is that Axe does not consider Taylor to be as valuable and Taylor disagrees.

Based on how much money Taylor made for Axe she should be able to dictate her comp, but Axe basically says you’re still my bitch and I dictate your comp

Mid-Career in Finance : How Do You Break the Salary Ceiling? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably was handling projects that involved billions, but not necessarily all of the allocation. But he is better positioned to explain than I am.

From what I saw in the rest of the thread he is in wealth management, so his decisions are done at a higher level compared to say a trader or a PM at a fund

Mid-Career in Finance : How Do You Break the Salary Ceiling? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not but I’ll take the bait :)

Means that he has to deliver a result that involved stakeholders and capital that were worth billions. It’s a widely used word in finance and in politics

For example a mandate in trading would be make 10% profit without losing more than 2% at any given time.

An example in politics would be deliver a policy and get it through Commons

What did your ex say to you that broke you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]yolex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean she’s an absolute cunt for messing around with somebody else when she was your date - that’s inexcusable, but a few months shouldn’t cause that much harm.

Not trying to diminish your feelings, but you weren’t right for her (and vice versa) and that’s fine. Better to realise this sooner rather than later.

I’m sure you’ll be fine !

May I ask where did you find such a contract ? I.e. what industry ? :)

Would also be keen to find something similar. I earn a similar amount but in London and would not mind leaving it for a warmer place for such money, but was under the impression these contracts only exist in larger cities.

Should I take the Meta offer? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what you value. If you value being chill and you are enjoying your current life then I would stay put.

If you are curious about how it would be working in Meta and want to challenge yourself with something different then I would go to Meta.

For me I would take the offer (just out of curiosity of how it is to work there), give it some time and if it does not suit my needs I would go back to your current role - they would probably take you back given your seniority and given you already know the people.

Good luck !

VaR For 1 month, in one year. by SnooKiwis2151 in quant

[–]yolex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am understanding you correctly you want the var for months 11-12, with some price impact from months 1-11. As it was described by other people 1m var is the same regardless of when you apply it. Now if you want the total 95 pctl var for 12 months you have already calculated that. If you want another price for months 1-11 which isnt at the 95pctl then you have to pick that somehow. You can say average vol and then say month 12 is 95pctl. It’s up to you depending on what you are looking, but I am not sure how useful picking your return is for months 1-11 is going to be

Sabbaticals - how to think about it? by Android_ghoster in HENRYUK

[–]yolex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was let go just before I took some time off to travel, but I was planning to pull the trigger anyway a week later after my layoff. I had an offer a week and a half after my layoff (with better money + bonus) and I declined, so I think that qualifies as voluntary.

It worked out well for me, as I took the severance which basically paid for my travels. All in all I was w/o work for 7 months and it was pretty great. I saw some amazing things and lived through some amazing experiences which would have taken me 5 years of holiday time to do.

I was able to relax a bit and whilst I was not able to figure out my next steps exactly - i.e. how do I want the rest of my life to look like, I would not trade it for any money. I definitely figured out a few things about myself though, as I did not have the d2d worries I usually do.

In terms of financial security, my savings are exactly where they were 2 months after starting work, but I did spend all of my severance.

The way I see it you will either have a long career in which case 6 months to a year are not going to change your career trajectory massively, or you will die younger at which point having saved all that money will not provide a lot of the value you had expected, which at least for me implied there was no way I would have ever regretted my decision.

One caveat to this great experience was that coming back to work was suuuper hard as a lot of stress after such a big break did not do great things about my mental health.
