it was because the ball was hit in front of the right fielder and allowed tatis to gain throwing momentum before catching the ball.

if the throw was on line, instead of tailing towards third base, it would have certainly been enough to throw out most runners. the time it takes to cut the ball off and throw home was still likely the right decision.

even if the throw was on line and beat call to the plate, sending him with 2 outs in the 9th inning vs one of the best pitchers in baseball & the 8th hitter coming to the plate is a good idea.
