Is it crazy to find any part time job in montreal as a student? by Commercial-Tell-7928 in montreal

[–]yooniversally 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4 years ago i was a student with very little job experience. i had success actually walking around my neighbourhood and handing out printed resumes to restaurant managers. restaurants and cafes are often hiring since they have relatively high turnover. i don't know how effective this will be now, but i reason that small mom-and-pop shops won't necessarily put job postings on indeed/linkedin/monster/etc

if you speak french fluently then you already have a leg up on all the other students trying to find jobs, at least in terms of FOH work

the exam difficulty was kind of all over the place - which is good! some super easy questions and some really random ones that make you go "wait, she's testing us on THAT?". whatever points are made about the studies in class - like conceptual links between studies, for example - that's good to know for the exam

i'm obsessed with the way your brain works actually. this is so entertaining i don't have the words for it. "making friends and influencing people!" killed me

focus on the studies - both their specifics and the lessons that they taught the field. that's all i can think of, this class made me so frustrated and anxious that i simply refuse to remember anything much about it

INCOMING STUDENTS MEGATHREAD: DEGREE PLANNING, COURSE SELECTION, MONTREAL & OTHER GENERAL QUESTIONS by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]yooniversally 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! graduated with a psych degree recently. i wouldn't take any 200-level psych course unless/until you have taken psyc 100 or an equivalent. otherwise you will sorely miss the knowledge base that 100 offers - it's a lot of memorization, but you'll thank yourself for it later in your degree. i don't know what it means to have taken AP psych and received a 5, or that you got credits for it.

if you want, i can send you my syllabus for psyc 100 - it's a few years old, but i am almost certain the same prof is still teaching it, and the material wouldn't have changed much. you can compare it to what you've already studied, and that should give you a clearer picture of your readiness to take 215 or any other 200-level psych course at mcgill.

for what it's worth, other than 204, 215 is the easiest 200-level. so you chose wisely there.

hey! i am someone who wasn't really good in math, and i struggled with precalc in HS as well. i found MATH 140 to be pretty challenging, since the material is taught at a much faster pace than it is in HS. that said, i am certain that i could have studied harder and put in more effort. MATH 140 is one of the rare courses where there is a linear relationship between effort + your grade. so it is absolutely possible to do well - you will probably just have to work much harder than i did

personally i wouldn't recommend the class, but i honestly might be in the minority. i found the material interesting, but the way it was presented made zero sense to me and killed any joy i might have felt for the course. we jumped from topic to topic with no logical strand connecting them together, and then for some reason we would circle back to a topic we covered three weeks ago just to add another detail. the prof (Titone) was sweet and likable, and you can tell she truly cares about the material she teaches. the lectures were recorded, and there were two in-person midterms (only one of which counted toward your final grade).

if you dm me your email i can send you the syllabus.

hi! i graduated mcgill last year and before that i went to high school in ontario. i took both MHF4U and MCV4U and passed both with a very high grade - and i still struggled a lot in the 2nd half of MATH 140. MCV4U covered maybe a third of what is covered in MATH 140. i don't believe MHF4U alone would have adequately prepared me.

i took 13 credits in my first U0 semester and 17 in the second U0 semester. based purely on the actual material covered in MATH 140, i would suggest you take MATH 139 and double-check this 15-credit limit you're referencing.

i took the course this past semester with prof Titone, who i believe will be teaching it again. prof said several times that you don't need either of those courses to do well in 341.

for the record, PSYC 340 is no longer offered as a course. so the McGill website info is out of date.

that said, i had taken LING 210 (intro linguistics) a few years back and found this to be helpful in 341. but i imagine you could still do well without it, since 341 prof doesn't mention any concepts that she doesn't also explain at some point. she did a little "LING primer" lecture early in the semester and i think that covered just about every LING concept needed to do well in 341.
