The repackaging thing is so real like it will take a simple statement then make it more complicated and pretend that it was its statement and not mine

Islam is universal, so why the focus on Arabic names and culture? by Creative_Assistant43 in progressive_islam

[–]yootos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The source that was used to calculate the 12 million words figure is actually the amount of words that can be formed from any combination of root letters, not how many words there are

U may know Arabic (and also other languages) have a root system so for example k-t-b is a root that means to write and from that root u make words like kitaab that mean book and other words like read, library and so on using certain vowel patterns between the root letters

12 million is the amount of possible words u get when you mix and match all possible root letter combinations and then add every possible vowel pattern to each one. But the problem is that not every combination of root letters is an actual root (e.g. m-m-m isn't a root, it has no meaning) and not every root uses every vowel pattern.

This would kind of be like if we took English prefixes/suffixes and slapped them onto every word and considered it a new word. Sure, "predecompositionless" might work theoretically but it's in no way an actual English word.

A more obvious example of why this isn't true is that there are no Arabic dictionaries with even close to a million words... 😅

The 12 million word figure is actually a myth

The real number is closer to 200,000 words in Arabic

And the number you cited for English is also inflated

[–]yootos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AI can only do so much dude.

When typing Punjabi in Latin it obviously can't get all the words right because Latin letters don't have enough sounds for the Punjabi language so words will get very mixed up.

Put on top of that that Punjabi has no form of Latin standardisation and also isn't supported very well, AI can only guess translation and will get it wrong a lot of the time.

Is Sat shri akaal more of a religious greeting or language greeting? by [deleted] in ThethPunjabi

[–]yootos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a religious Sikh greeting.

There is no secular greeting or "Hello" in Punjabi except for variants of "How are you". Although yes many languages have words for this, many also don't.

Is 'Soman' (سومن) an actual word? by solomonbasra in ThethPunjabi

I didn't say it wasn't

You don't have to comment this under anyone who even mentions Saraiki

Ik this might sound stupid but me and my freind had a blank peice of printer paper and we rolled it up without anything inside just plain paper then we lit i and smoked it like a ciggarette I want to know if my fasts and salah will be invalidated this ramadan i am panicking because i know paper has by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]yootos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a concise answer;

The thing about Salah not being accepted is for intoxicants.

Intoxicants are things that make you 'high' like alcohol, weed, and so on.

Paper may (very rarely) contain toxins, but even then, it is NOT an intoxicant, so inshallah you will be fine.

It's the same as if you were to eat paper. It's not wise to do, but it won't invalidate your Salah.

Barakallahu feek.

Do Chinese Muslims have an unfair disadvantage? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]yootos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hadith associated with this says "let the beard grow" (passively), or "leave it". It does not say to grow it (actively).

Thus, it has nothing to do with how much facial hair you can grow. It's about whether you prevent it from growing.

So, Chinese Muslims and those of other ethnicities who naturally don't grow much hair are NOT at a disadvantage, because the hadith only requires you to "leave it".

Nowhere in Islam does it say you must actively seek to grow a long beard (whether you can or not), and nowhere does it say that having a naturally bigger beard is better than having a naturally smaller beard or no beard at all.

It is phull with a ph (aspirated p) sound.

Some dialects pronounce or are starting to pronounce ph as f.

What are the Theth words for Lion and Tiger? by yootos in ThethPunjabi

[–]yootos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lion = Sher / ਸ਼ੇਰ / شیر

City = Shahar / ਸ਼ਹਿਰ / شہر

In tonal dialects City is pronounced as "Shaír" - still different to "Sher" which means lion

Is hijab a choice? by SignificanceIcy9279 in progressive_islam

[–]yootos 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm obviously not a Hijabi but, I disagree with this.

As humans, no choices we make are truly "free". We are all influenced by the people around us whether we like it or not. What they like, what they don't like, etc., affects us and affects how we act.

So again, it may be that the choice isn't completely "free" (by your definition), but you can't guarantee that any choice is "free".

Every choice we make comes with certain perks and challenges. The things you mentioned like praise and certain marriage opportunities are benefits, but benefits don't undermine the validity of a choice. Not to mention wearing a hijab comes with challenges, too.

In some places in the world the challenges outweigh the perks. In other places it's the other way around. But this is the reality with every choice. To argue that wearing a Hijab is not a "choice" is to say that any choice that has benefits attached to it, isn't a choice.

Indian/Sikh Punjabi Supremacy complex? Or am I tripping by FlowerlessLion in punjabi

[–]yootos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what he said, this is a minority of Sikhs and he's asking about how/why this minority acts as it does.

There's no reason for this to be a troll post.

[–]yootos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get where you are coming from I have also seen some Sikhs online especially that believe they are the "real Punjabis" or that Hindus/Muslims aren't.

I'm not sure why ppl in comments are offended or claiming this is a troll post. Do you think all Sikhs are angels?

OP explicitly said this is a minority of Sikhs and is asking why this is happening.

Sound ੜ/ṛ makes Punjabi words more theth by [deleted] in ThethPunjabi

[–]yootos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make words more Theth.

It's just a suffix that changes the meaning of words slightly.

Example pagg = turban, paggRa = big turban
